Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, under the direction of Lori-Ann Novello, did just that this past week with their annual “Spirit of the Community” meeting. At the event, numerous service clubs and organizations made presentations regarding
what their group does, and how we all benefit. Mayor Michael Lavorata and Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle both attended, and thanked Ms. Novello and her staff for a very well-done, informative program, with participation from many of our community leaders.

Fifth grade students at Union Free School District assistance of the “Journeys The unique and Daniel Street Elementary explored the culture of the into American Indian interactive presentation School in the Lindenhurst Plains Indians with the Territory” program. lead by guest presenters Monica Colberg and program director Bob Vetter, enabled students to learn about the daily life experiences of Plains Indian children through hands-on activities, role play and a traveling museum of authentic artwork and artifacts including a reconstructed teepee. They also played Native American games such as Shinny and hoop and stick, which taught skills, respect and teamwork, and important principals in the Native American culture. Just like in modern day school, there were always goals beneath the fun. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness. Located in the Amityville Community Resource Center, this Boutique is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10AM-3PM by appointment only (at this time, shelter staff/case managers must schedule an appointment to pick up their clients’ items). Upon entering the boutique, you can expect to find clothing, nonperishable food, new bedding and pillows, personal care and feminine care items, toiletries and much more! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more. The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! With five hives on its property, Pinelawn is home to over a half million honey bees, which help pollinate its gardens, trees and schrubs. On Sunday September 19th, 2021, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum hosted its 3rd annual Honey Bee Experience event as part of its ongoing community education program. This educational and fun event highlighted the importance of honey bees in our environment and provided a safe, up-close look at these marvelous insects. Pinelawn hosts five beehives on property and those hives help in pollinating various gardens, trees and shrubs on the property. Over 320 guests attended the free event that featured educational activities such as honey bee arts & crafts, a “Find The Queen” activity where children searched for the queen bee within the observation hive,

or those brewed in the month of March, shortly before brewing ceased for the season. These Märzen beers were kept in cold storage throughout the spring and summer or brewed at a higher
gravity so they would keep and be available for consumption during Oktoberfest celebrations. Such brewing restrictions were no longer necessary after refrigeration became commonplace
and made it possible to brew beer year-round, but there’s still a strong chance that steins being hoisted during this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations will be filled with Märzenstyle beers.
