Operation SPLASH is a nonprofit organization founded in 1990 with the goal of cleaning up and preserving Long Island’s south shore bays, beaches, and salt marshes. Since then, the organization has grown from one caring person to several thousand members across seven chapters dotted along Long Island’s South Shore. SPLASH’s seven cleanup boats run from March through November and are fully operated by volunteer captains and crew members. Over the past three decades, volunteers have retrieved more than 3,000,000 pounds of litter, marine debris, and navigational hazards from the south shore. Most of what is pulled from the water comes from landbased sources — through storm drains and from storms blowing debris into the water. In efforts to reduce the impact of storm drain-sourced marine debris, Operation SPLASH designed and currently maintains the Mill Basin Debris Trap and advocated for other environmental legislation in New York State.

Beyond collecting marine debris, Operation SPLASH has also made tremendous headway in stemming the awful tide of sewage being dumped in our bays and the toxic pollution entering our waters through stormwater runoff. SPLASH crews actively monitor and identify pollutants, as well as their sources. To reduce the flow of toxins and trash into the bays, SPLASH has collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation SPLASH also offers STEM-based education programs to educate students throughout Nassau County about the importance of Long Island’s south shore bays and the challenges that they face. Students from elementary school through

college have the opportunity to learn through hands-on programming that goes beyond the classroom to include boat tours and local excursions. With the leadership of talented and environmentally passionate marine tradespeople, educators and business owners, Operation SPLASH has remained focused on its mission and produces extraordinary results. SPLASH volunteers work hard to protect and preserve the South Shore bays and salt marshes, along with the wildlife, fish, and fowl that call them home. The ultimate goal is to maintain these precious ecosystems through cleanup and outreach efforts for future Long Islanders to respectfully enjoy for generations to come. Operation SPLASH depends on volunteers and donations to crew and maintain each of the seven patrol boats, and actively welcomes new members both during the cleanup season and beyond. Tom Collings of Bellmore is swimming 9 miles to mark his 70th birthday. On Monday, October 11 (Columbus Day) beginning at 7:00am, if tides and weather permit. If not, the K-9 Mile Swim will be rescheduled. The Swim will end any time from 3:00 pm and 6:30 pm depending on water conditions. We hope to have Last Hope dogs as cheerleaders at the start of Tom’s swim- contingent on the dogs’ adopters being early risers. The event will take place at from Cold Spring Harbor to Lloyd Harbor and back, starting and ending at boat basin by Billy Joel Town of Huntington Park. Tom will be accompanied by 2 friends paddling kayaks.Andrew Pannullo, Tom’s massage therapist and Dr. David Komatsu, professor of medicine and martial arts teacher at Stony Brook University. The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island. Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The majority of people experiencing homelessness on Long Island are families that cannot afford rent or cannot find rental units quickly enough in a high cost and low availability rental market. There is also a significant local homeless population of aging single adults and adult couples that were living on fixed incomes and could no longer afford rent. While many of us could never imagine being homeless for even a single night, for both homeless families and homeless aging adults on Long Island, most remain homeless in a shelter for over six months on average,

while some remain homeless in shelters for several years before securing permanent

housing. LICH has expanded their services. These services include street outreach, housing navigation, system data management and outcomes tracking. All of those are part of what has become known as the local “Coordinated Entry System”. Coordinated Entry is a personcentered, housing-focused approach to streamline access to housing and services, while prioritizing those who have been homeless the longest and those who are the most in need of housing and support. In 2020, LICH assisted over 3,000 Long Islanders with food and toiletries and connected approximately 200 households to permanent housing. Next month from November 14-November 21 it will be Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week, let’s join together and help those in need. FIVE TOWNS COLLEGE CELEBRATES THE 46TH/47TH COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES The Board of Trustees, Faculty, and Staff are thrilled to announce the live and in person celebration of the Class of 2020 and the Class on 2021 graduates at the esteemed Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts on Saturday, October 9 at 9:00 a.m. To accommodate both Classes impacted by the pandemic, the College selected The Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts, a beautiful beaux arts theatre. Flecktones. Wooten has been ranked as one of the top ten bass guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine. Victor Wooten will address the graduates following the conferral of this degree. Additionally, the College will bestow an Honorary Doctor of Music (Mus.D.) on long-time Long Island music educator William Fortgang. Fortgang, who served on the College’s faculty before retiring in 2020, came to the institution following decades of service in Long Island’s public schools. Graduates are encouraged to take photos and videos celebrating their graduation and share them on social media using #FTCGrad2020 or #FTCGrad2021. Graduates will receive their diplomas by mail at a later date. Tickets are required for guests and can be obtained from your graduate. Proof of vaccination is required to all who attend in person.
