The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Insulation is typically placed in areas where air escapes, such as between the stud cavities inside the walls and in the attic, and serves to slow and reduce heat transfer. The U.S. Department of Energy says between 50 and 70 percent of the energy used in homes is for heating and cooling. By improving home insulation, homeowners can make their homes more comfortable, consistent and efficient.

In fact, the ENERGY STAR program overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says homeowners stand to save an average of 15 percent on heating and cooling costs by adding proper insulation. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board join the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association to welcome other elected officials, first responders and residents to the town’s hometown 9/11 memorial to mark the 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that claimed the lives of 48 town residents.

The hometown memorial is located at Overlook Beach, which allowed the town to hold a sociallydistanced service in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. Attendees wore face coverings for the entirety of the event. The service was also live-streamed to the town’s Facebook page for those who could not attend in-person. Supervisor Schaffer spoke about the importance

of remembering not only the victims of that terrible day, but also the brave first responders who have lost their lives to illnesses linked to their work at Ground Zero as they sifted through the rubble. The names of the 48 residents killed during the attacks were read aloud, each followed by a single bell tolling.

DIY Projects That Can Conserve Energy Around The House Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. But the scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

After learning of the wonderful work that the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst does for children in the community, Billy and Nicole met with the club’s board and were convinced that those works and the Kiwanis motto “To Improve the World One Child and One Community at a Time” - was well-suited to Restoration’s purpose. And so in January they selected Lindenhurst Kiwanis as a recipient of their fundraising efforts. Then the world changed. After the shutdown in March due to the coronavirus, Billy, Nicole, and the entire staff at Restoration, worked tirelessly - at first offering

take-out to patrons and then by setting up tables in what was their parking lot so that diners could safely enjoy the Restoration experience. And thankfully, the community responded by supporting Restoration. As a result of and as payback for that support, on Tuesday Billy and Nicole presented the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst with a check for $14,262.00 that will be used for years to come to help send children to Kamp Kiwanis in upstate New York for a week of summer fun and adventure. Setting The Stage To Sell

Your home will sell.There’s no question about that - In today’s market or tomorrow’s, good or bad. However, if you put your home on the market without preparing it for sale, you may have a long wait for an offer or you may not realize your homes Top value. You don’t have to turn your pockets inside out to get it ready to sell. Some outlay may be necessary for painting, for replacing worn woodwork, carpeting. cabinet doors, or for repairing broken fixtures or appliances. There are, however many fix-ups that cost absolutely nothing except a little time and elbow grease. These fix-ups will make all the difference in whether or not your home makes the most of itself. Here are a few tips for getting your home ready to show itself off to your pocketbook’s best advantage:

Spruce up all around the home. Keep lawn and shrubbery trimmed and free of bicycles and other clutter. Keep the garden beds weeded and mulched. Put a flowering pot on the front step and keep it watered and trimmed. Fill potholes in your driveway and tidy up walkways. Clean off your outdoor furniture; remove any rust (or toss out the rusted item). Clear out the garage of everything but cars. If yours has become a twocar attic, throw out the excess. Straighten gutters, the mailbox, the fence - and other things that sag. Fix doorbells, tighten loose door-knobs, and oil squeaking hinges. Repair broken windows and shutters.

Keep bathrooms scrubbed, tidy and equipped with fresh soap and neatlyhung towels (matching, if possible). 22. Get rid of all stains and install new washers and dripping faucets. 23. Feature (with lighting or furniture arrangement) your home’s best characteristics (a fireplace, a picture window, a balcony, ceiling beams, a kitchen eating area, etc.). 24. If you’ve repainted (preferably in safe neutral tones), add bold splashes of color with your brightest throw pillows, crockery, pictures. 25. Place plants in strategic spots in any room - the bigger the more glamorous, if space permits. 26. Light the whole home, especially dark corners and hallways. 27. Hang mirrors where they will reflect outdoor light - as well as make a room look larger.
