Throughout the Lindenhurst School District, students and staff honored the memory of the fallen heroes, lost 20 years ago on Sept. 11, 2001. At the elementary level, students, donning red, white and blue observed a moment of silence followed by the singing of the national anthem. Some schools added American flag displays to their
grounds as well. At the secondary level, students watched “9/11: One Day in America,” an American documentary television miniseries that explored the events of the day. Additionally, at the Lindenhurst High School, students learned of the story of Pat Tillman, the NFL player, who put his football career on hold after 9/11when he chose instead
to enlist in the Army. He subsequently gave his life in Afghanistan. “As our students were born in a post 9/11 world, it is our obligation to ensure that we honor the memory of our fallen heroes,” said Superintendent Dan Giordano. “The Lindenhurst school community will never forget.”

Helping Hand Rescue Mission www.helpinghandsrescuemission.org
Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-profit organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give.
Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering with HHRM in another way, they are looking for volunteers to help at the mission with their distributions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tasks include sorting, folding, hanging on racks, rolling racks in and out of the building, helping with pantry bags on occasion and being available to help people find items for their families. HHRM is so Holiday Toy Drive. thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. The first month they started this outreach they helped 16 moms and 22 babies. They have served consistently once a month over the past 5 years, even “drive thru” style through the pandemic to serve between 100 and 150 babies each month. 1 in 4 families in New York struggles with diaper need. If you would like to donate directly to this outreach or volunteer at a Baby Blessings event, please contact Kimberly at kimberlygambino@hhrm. org for more information. Their October Baby Blessings event will take place on October 19th from 10AM-12PM. Parents that wish to attend must bring ID, ID or insurance for children and proof of Huntington Township address.

During the last weeks of August, the back-toschool excitement begins for students and teachers alike. For Alleghany Avenue Elementary School students, this experience was made even better by the introduction of Principal Meghan Shore.
On Aug. 20, Shore invited the students to attend a “Popsicles with the Principal” meet-and-greet celebrations. Throughout the day students said hello and gathered on the school’s playground while parents acquainted themselves with the new
administrator and had questions answered. “I’m excited to start school and to learn more,” said second grader Faith Connor. “Mrs. Shore seems really nice. I’m excited she’s the principal.”
BACCA Presenting Debut Theater Company Original Play Debut Theater Company is scheduled to present original full-length dramas at the BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst starting this Fall. The first show, a romantic comedy titled Adam and Eve, Inc., opens October 8 and runs for two weekends, Oct. 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17. It follows the adventures of a young man hoping to find a life-mate with the help of a traditional marriage broker, who offers him
three “first dates” the oldfashioned, face-to-face way. About Debut Theater Company: Founder and playwright Anthony DiFranco, director Deborah Rupy, and nearly all of our casts are Long Islanders. This theater company prides itself on its humanistic, thoughtprovoking, one-of-a-kind material. Next after Adam and Eve, Inc. is another original, The Stars Above You,
which opens at BACCA December 10 and runs Dec. 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19. Makes 25 servings 4 cups sugar 8 eggs 2 cups oil, canola or safflower 21/2 teaspoons vanilla 4 cups flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 pounds carrots, grated 2 cups nuts, chopped 21/2 raisins (optional)
8 ounces cream cheese 5 ounces butter 11/2 pounds powdered sugar 11/2 teaspoons vanilla
1) Beat the sugar and eggs together until well blended. Stir in the oil and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Combine the egg mixture. Fold in carrots, nuts and raisins. 2) Divide the batter between two (9- x 13-inch) greased baking pans. Refrigerate the batter between baking times. Bake the cakes in a moderately hot oven (350 F) for 0approximately 40 minutes. Let cool completely. 3) Bring the cream cheese and butter to room temperature. Cream the two together until smooth. Add sugar gradually, shaking it through a strainer to get rid of the lumps and beat until smooth. Add the vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until it has a good spreading consistency. Frost with cream cheese frosting.
Hearty Four Bean Chili For Autumn Days! Makes 8 to 10 servings 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 medium carrots, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar 3 tablespoons chili powder 2 tablespoons ground cumin 1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon salt 1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce 1 can (15 ounces) small white beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) light kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) dark kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained 1 cup vegetable broth
1 can (4 ounces) diced mild green chillies 1 ounce unsweetened baking chocolate, chopped 1 tablespoon cider vinegar.
1) Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions, carrots and bell pepper; cook and stir 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add garlic, tomato paste, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, oregano and salt; cook and stir 1 minute. 2) Stir in tomatoes, tomato sauce, beans, broth, chillies, and chocolate; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in vinegar.
Grilled Pumpkin and Black Bean Burger, a Vegan Burger! Serves 4 1 tablespoon oil 1/2 cup diced red onion 1/2 cup diced red pepper 3 cloves minced garlic 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 15 ounce can black beans 1 teaspoon salt 2 minced chipotle peppers 1/4 cup sweet corn 3 tablespoon mashed pumpkin 1 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional if you are avoiding nuts)
1) Dice the red onion, red pepper and mince the garlic. Heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the garlic, onion, red pepper and sweet corn then sauté for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. 2) Drain and rinse the black beans and pat dry. Place in a deep bowl. Using the back of a fork, mash about half the beans and leave the other half whole. Then add the pumpkin, cooked vegetable mixture, chipotle peppers, breadcrumbs, pecans (if using), salt, and cumin. Mix well until all ingredients are combined to desired consistency. Note, if mixture is too dry you can add a little more pumpkin. Using hands, form into four large patties and refrigerate for a half-hour. 3) Heat grill to medium-high heat. Brush grill with oil then place burgers on the grill. Cook for approximately 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Remove and serve.

On the evening of Saturday, August 14th, the Lindenhurst Fire Department held their annual awards ceremony. Being honored were a number of dedicated volunteers, including Ex-Chief Craig Santoli, who recently completed his term as the Department’s Chief Engineer, as well as fifty year members Ex-Chief Henry G. Batz, Jr., Ex-Captain Larry F. Lyman, and Ex-Captain Thomas Schirmuhly, and sixty year member Richard Lyman.
Additionally, representatives from the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York were present to recognize Firefighter Mark Miller and Lieutenant John Tighe for being named 2021 Firefighter of the Year. They received the honor for their actions in rescuing two rescue two persons who were trapped when their car left Montauk highway and ended up in a canal along the Great South Bay.

During National Preparedness Month, this September, PSEG Long Island encourages its customers to take the necessary steps to safeguard their families, homes and businesses. Emergencies can happen at any time and preparing ahead of time helps keep everyone safe. PSEG Long Island reminds customers to “Prepare to Protect” yourself and those around you. “Safety is and has always been our top priority for our customers and employees,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island. “To help spread the word about the importance of being prepared, PSEG Long Island partners with groups like the United Way and Sesame Workshop. Taking the time to prepare and having a plan limits the negative impact of an emergency. Be prepared, not scared” PSEG Long Island’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures.
Here’s how customers can prepare for a severe storm and other emergencies: Ensure you have a battery-powered radio and fresh batteries. Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water. Create an emergency communications plan. Develop an evacuation plan. Charge your cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices. Make sure to have cash available. Banks may be closed or inaccessible after a storm. Fill up your vehicle’s fuel tank. Bring in unsecured objects and furniture from patios and balconies. Compile a list of emergency phone numbers, including PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number: 1-800-490-0075. Discuss storm and lightning safety with your family. The Peace Corps is Recruiting Volunteers from Diverse Backgrounds
(StatePoint) The Peace Corps, established in 1961, partners with communities abroad to develop sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges at the grassroots level. While all volunteers returned home in March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the agency is working to return to service and is now actively recruiting volunteers of backgrounds historically underrepresented in the organization, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Asian-Americans. “As part of our mission, we seek to reflect the rich diversity of the United States abroad, bringing different perspectives and solutions to development issues in the countries we serve,” says Carol Spahn, acting director of the Peace Corps. “We also seek to create inclusion – a culture that encourages collaboration, flexibility and fairness; and leverages diversity so that all individuals are able to contribute to their full potential.” If you’re interested in Peace Corps service, here’s what to know. New Challenges While Peace Corps service is demanding for every volunteer, being from a diverse ethnic background can introduce additional challenges, according to those who have served. “I had to deal with
people’s expectations about Americans looking a certain way. About once a week I had to explain that Americans come from diverse backgrounds, and that I was just as much an American as any other Peace Corps volunteer,” says Neng Lee, a first-generation HmongAmerican who served as a health volunteer in the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstan) from 2015 to 2017, and as a youth development volunteer from 2017 to 2019. Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively,
instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. I also translated most of my CPR and first aid materials into Kyrgyz,” says Lee, who notes that, “Volunteering opens so many doors in the future, and the people you meet along the way will help you.” To learn more about Peace Corps or to connect with a recruiter, visit peacecorps.gov. “Volunteers are international cultural ambassadors representing the United States. Understanding the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences. The NWS uses a four-tier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

Donating Blood Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing
donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one
year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500
donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting
vaccinated each day, we are thrilled to watch our state recover from this catastrophic year,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “As New York bounces back in strides this spring, we need everyone to make an appointment and donate blood to help save lives. While the
end of the pandemic is near, our struggle to fight for those in need continues.” We are taking extra precautions to help prevent the personto-person spread of COVID-19. As always, people are not eligible to donate if they’re experiencing a cold, sore throat, respiratory
