The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and

experiencing the wish, and may be able to provide physician documentation when requested. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Options for Community Living, Inc. www.optionscl.org Options for Community Living, Inc. is a non-profit organization, which provides housing, support services and care coordination for people recovering from mental illness and those living with HIV/AIDS or other chronic health conditions. They are hosting “Drag Queen Bingo” on Saturday, October 19th at the North Village Tavern in Rockville Centre. The event will run from 2PM-5PM and is $30/person, which will provide each person with 2 bingo boards & 1 drink voucher. The event’s proceeds will benefit this organization. The sun was shining and so were the smiles on the faces of the staff and students of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District who returned for the first day of school on Sept. 4. The day was not only the start of a new academic year, but for many in the district, it was the start of a new chapter of their lives. Kindergarten students entered classrooms for the first time, leaving behind the security of their parents. Sixth graders entered the middle school and were introduced to the idea of changing classes and getting lockers. Ninth grade students officially became “high-schoolers” and the 12th graders experienced the last “first day” of their Lindenhurst education.
