September 11, 2001 will live in the mind of every American throughout time. America will never forget 9/11/01. Lindenhurst will never forget. September is a time to remember all that was lost to us that day: our sense of security, our peace, our innocence, our belief that we were safe beyond such random violence. Most of all, we remember those who lost their lives on September 11th, and specifically, the eight Lindenhurst residents that lost or gave their lives that horrific day. This year, the Village of Lindenhurst will be holding our 19th Year Candlelight Remembrance Service beginning at 7:00PM on

A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the first Patriot Day. On this day, the U.S. flag is flown at halfmast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.

Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States. Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane crashed into the U.S. Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was intercepted from the hijackers and crash-landed in rural Pennsylvania. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks, but many people felt

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.
Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Time To Remember Loved Ones & End Overdose Local communities in Town of Babylon and around the world came together on August 31 to remember those who have died or suffered permanent injury due to drug overdose. Observed on the 31st of August every year, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drugrelated deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use. By holding an event this year, the people of Lindenhurst are joining themselves to a global movement for understanding, compassion, and change.
In 2019, there were 874 IOAD events of all kinds, held in 39 countries. People and communities came together to raise awareness of one of the world’s most urgent public health crises – one that, unfortunately, is only getting worse. “We are putting on this event to honour our loved ones who have died or been injured by addiction. By coming together to remember them, we stand together to say that more needs to be done to end overdose in our community” said Nikola Segoloni, Project Coordinator for Lindy Cares. Pastor Rick Mullins and his wife Rita were instrumental in creating a
comforting environment for all who attended. “Overdose can affect anybody and one of the messages of this day is that the people who overdose are our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters – they are loved and they are missed.” Lori Novello, Executive Director of Lindy Cares says “No family should ever have to go through the pain of losing a loved one because of overdose so we will keep working to raise awareness. By creating pathways to recovery and connecting people to professional resources we hope to find ways to tackle addiction and end overdose.”

Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families. • Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations. • Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03
a.m., and 10:28 a.m. • Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as Patriot Day, asks people to do at least one good deed in honor of those who died on 9-11. • Make a trip to New York City and visit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. • If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001. • Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs. • Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11. Editor’s Note: The Patriot Day celebrated on September 11 is a separate holiday from Patriot’s Day, which is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts.
