Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. September 11, 2001 will live in the mind of every American throughout time. America will never forget 9/11/01. Lindenhurst will never forget. September is a time to remember all that was lost to us that day: our sense of security, our peace, our innocence, our belief that we were safe beyond such random violence. Most of all, we remember those who lost their lives on September 11th, and specifically, the eight Lindenhurst residents

that lost or gave their lives that horrific day. This year, the Village of Lindenhurst will be holding our 19th Year Candlelight Remembrance Service beginning at 7:00PM on Friday, September 11th, 2020 at the Village’s 9-11 Memorial Garden, located on the south side of Lindenhurst Village Park, on Byrd Street between Irmisch Avenue and Heling Boulevard. Village Trustee Joan Masterson said “This

Congratulations To The Lindenhurst High School Class Of 2020 During consecutive drive through ceremonies on Aug. 6 and 7, the Lindenhurst High School Class of 2020, officially became alumni of the district. Donning graduation gowns and personally decorated caps, the students arrived at the Lindenhurst High School one last time with their families in tow. As the sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” filled the air, the soon-to-be graduates walked the red carpet to a podium where they were greeted by various members of the administration and the board of education. To the applause of their family members, the graduates were announced and their diplomas received. The events were livestreamed, and all of the graduation speeches prerecorded and housed on a dedicated graduation webpage on the district’s website. The Class of 2020 had much to overcome as a global pandemic cut short their senior year and took from them the ability to celebrate with more traditional events such as

a prom and an in-person graduation ceremony. The themes of overcoming adversity and remaining positive were common among the LHS graduation speeches this year. In her welcoming address, Class President Angelina MenDell urged her classmates to not “let the memories of the way we finished high school take over the millions of other memories we have also made throughout our years together in elementary school, middle school and the past 3.67 years. Nothing could ever take away those memories from us, not even a pandemic.” “When reflecting on our lives as a whole, this year will definitely stand out because it was unique,” class salutatorian Forrest McMann said. “Therefore, if there’s anything to take away from this year, it is that we must harness and develop the aspects that make us all different and unique in order to stand out and make our mark on the world.” He went on to encourage his fellow graduates to “stay

determined and positive when looking towards our future; we all have the potential to do anything we set our minds to.” “This moment is about the Class of 2020,” said valedictorian Veronica Szygalowicz when she took to the podium. “It’s about how we’ve been able to show the rest of the world that we are hopeful, determined and relentless in the pursuit of our goals. We make the best with what we’ve got, and we do it together. Yes, we will have to deal with loss and grief and fear, but it doesn’t stop us; it doesn’t define us. Instead, we will persevere and on whatever path we choose for ourselves, we will succeed, and we will do it with grace, with elegance, with confidence and with a newly awakened sense of enthusiasm and purpose.” Also addressing the Class of 2020 and extending their congratulations and well wishes were the Lindenhurst High School Principal, Dr. Candice Brodie, and Superintendent of Schools Mr. Daniel E. Babylon Village Art Walk The Babylon Village Arts Council (BVAC) will sponsor its first Babylon Village Art Walk on Saturday,September 19, 2020 from 11-3. In collaboration with the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce the Art Walk will celebrate the arts within the Village. This free community event will take participants on a stroll through picturesque Babylon Village with a map of the highlighted stops on the Art Walk, promoting both the artist and business. A ‘Where’s Warhol’ style family scavenger hunt will be a children’s component in which a dozen Andy Warhol characters will be hidden

in windows at locations throughout the village. Permanent art fixtures such as Jack Jack’s J2X Abstract Art Gallery,Village Art and Frame as well as the Bayman statue by artist and sculptor Jose I. Fernandez will be featured on the walk. BVAC will set up a welcome station at Ooh la la Boutiques where maps can be picked up and there will be giveaways for children who find all of the hidden Warhol’s. How To Manage Low Bandwidth During Remote Learning Sessions

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help

students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.

Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments. • Encourage students to sync files to their devices. Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them offline, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should understand that maintenance is required to keep these devices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape. • Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are

designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those conditions can result in damage. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors. devices • Clean regularly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices you rely on each day. Some may require a specific cleaner or a particular fabric to help ensure the device isn’t scratched or damaged. Spray cleaners on a cloth and then wipe off devices, rather than spraying cleaners directly on electronics. Try a can of compressed air to remove dust from crevices or vents.

• Invest in a surge protector. While surge protector power strips multiply the number of available outlets, they also serve a more important purpose. These devices will cut off power to plugged-in electronics if there is a power surge, helping to prevent damage. • Don’t overcharge. It’s essential to have gadgets charged and ready to go, but overcharging can reduce battery life. Do not leave devices charging overnight. Battery University ™, a free educational website offering battery information, says that nickel- and lithiumbased batteries should be stored with a 40 percent state-of-charge. This level minimizes age-related capacity loss and keeps the battery in good condition. • Use protective cases. Cases can prevent damage if devices are dropped and also may safeguard against scratched screens. Cases and covers also minimize dust and dirt on devices. • Keep software upto-date. Security issues may arise when software is not updated, and programs may not run effectively or be compatible with others. Along the same vein, routinely clean out unused files to free up space, and clear cookies and browser histories to maintain speed and efficiency. Routine maintenance can keep electronics working properly when they’re needed the most.

This program provides deferred payment loans (zero percent interest) to qualified low and moderate income homeowners in the Town of Babylon in order to improve housing conditions and correct housing code violations by repairing and rehabilitating health and safety hazards, including lead-based paint removal. Eligible Home Repairs / Improvements can include, but are not limited to, electrical improvements, accessibility improvements, insulation and energy conservation measures, new heating systems, new roofs, new windows and doors, plumbing, structural improvements and vinyl siding. Maximum income limits will apply when assessing program eligibility. Program Guidelines may be reviewed at www.cdcli.org. new imaging agents, F-18 PSMA and F-18 FES. As an active medical professional, Dr. Love has contributed many articles to several national and international journals as well as co-authored book chapters. She has also has served in various leadership capacities at the SNMMI, RSNA, ACR, and JRCNMT including having completed a two-year term as President of the Greater NY Chapter and Delegate for the House of Representatives for SNMMI and RSNA Judge for RadioGraphics. She serves as a board member of the General Clinical Nuclear Medicine Board of the SNMMI, JRCNMT representing the ACR, and the AUC committee for infection imaging. 18th Annual Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival Streaming Online For 2020 Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, in cooperation with Suffolk County and the Bluegrass Club of Long Island, is pleased to announce the 18th Annual Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival. Due to ongoing health concerns, this year’s festival will be presented online, featuring a series of six Saturday night concerts beginning September 26, 2020, and five Wednesday night workshops beginning September 30th. BACCA’s Executive Director, Liz Mirarchi, stated, “We are grateful for the support of Suffolk County, ensuring that

even during this difficult time we are able to continue the Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival into its 18th year. With their help, we can promote our local artists and share their music in a way that is both safe and accessible.” The Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival is a celebration of traditional Bluegrass, Americana and Roots Music. The series will be shown on the BACCA YouTube channel, which can be accessed by searching YouTube for Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts and clicking on the “Subscribe”

button. Although there is no fee for viewing or participating in the broadcasts, BACCA will provide an option for viewers to make a donation during the concerts and workshops. The contributions will then be used to support arts and cultural events on Long Island through BACCA’s programming. Our 2020 LineUp features local and regional acts as well as national touring artists. The Saturday evening shows will be presented as prerecorded concerts, but each will be paired with live commentary by the band members via the Zoom platform, and

an interactive feature which will allow the viewers to ask questions and comment in real time. The concerts have been recorded at various locations on Long Island, showing off some of the beautiful and diverse places available to our residents. The workshops will be live, interactive events on five Wednesday evenings.
