One thing I have learned from a week of trees down and massive power outages from Tropical Storm Isaias -- now is the best time to prepare for the next tropical storm or hurricane. With all the news of the Coronavirus crisis, it would be easy to forget that experts are calling for an active tropical storm and hurricane season; we do not want to be figuring things out as a major storm bears down on us. Here are some important tips to keep in mind for your planning: • If a hurricane, or another tropical storm, hits and power is interrupted, and

Factors To Consider When Setting Up A School Carpool

TAKING A LOOK BACK! This August I have been “taking a look back” at articles I have published in the past, giving various charities another chance at exposure. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful nonprofit, The Book Fairies.

A carpool that is neighborhood-based as opposed to one that is based more on students’ social circles will likely prove more convenient for parents. A carpool with neighbors means parents won’t have to drive far to pick up and/or drop off other students, saving everyone valuable time each day. • Don’t go overboard. Even if your minivan or SUV can seat half a dozen children, you may want to limit the carpool to a more manageable number of youngsters. Getting kids up and out the door each morning is a challenge when there’s just one youngster

By limiting a carpool to between two and four children, parents won’t have to worry about too many hiccups during their morning routines. • Discuss early closures and other unique days in advance. School schedules tend to be the same throughout the year, but there are various times when early closures can affect carpools. This is especially true for parents with children who attend different schools. When planning a carpool, discuss early closure dates with other parents and develop a plan for how to manage pickup. School carpools are convenient for working parents. Planning prior to the school year is a great way to ensure carpools are successful.

Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have

Getting kids to and from school can be a challenge for working parents. School start times do not always coordinate with parents’ work schedules, and school typically lets out before parents’ workdays end. Carpools are one way parents confront the challenge posed by juggling work and family. With a new school year approaching, parents can take the following factors into consideration as they work to establish carpools. • Determine your insurance needs. Before planning carpools, parents who plan to participate should contact their auto insurance providers to make sure their policies cover driving others. The organizer of the carpool should make sure every parent does this prior to

Johnson Controls Partners With NEWS from Dominican Village: The Village Of Lindenhurst To Lead Residents Stay Active While Adhering to Sustainability Charge Social Distancing Guidelines

Johnson Controls, a global leader for smart and sustainable buildings, and the Village of Lindenhurst, announced their partnership through a major Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC). With goals that include sourcing project funding, addressing deferred maintenance and setting the standard for efficiency, the Village will undergo a community-wide initiative for sustainability. The $5.8 million ESPC is guaranteed by Johnson Controls to generate $8.3 million in energy cost savings over 20 years, helping the Village achieve long-term budget neutrality. The project will consist of Village-wide cutting-edge infrastructure improvements such as solar energy systems, LED municipal street lighting and other renewable energy technologies. The ESPC encompasses 11 buildings across the Village, two parks and a marina. LED lighting will be installed within municipality facilities and in outdoor community spaces, generating $31,000 in lighting rebates. To further maximize the Village’s energy efficiency efforts, Johnson Controls will replace the Rainbow Community Center’s aged boiler with a new high efficiency boiler, as well as install electric car charging stations at Village Hall. For energy renewability, solar

photovoltaic (PV) systems will be constructed on facility rooftops, as well as the rooftop of a new carport in the Village’s commuter rail parking lot. “Sustainability is a pillar of our work, and we are honored to power the Village’s mission for a greener future,” said Chris Fitzsimmons, Johnson Controls account executive. “Our experts have the deep industry experience to provide constituents with a comprehensive approach, delivering infrastructure improvements to maximize their commitment to both energy efficiency and their citizens. Through consistent collaboration with the Village of Lindenhurst through an ESPC, the project will be paid over time through its guaranteed savings, empowering the Village to focus resources on community wellness and services while costing taxpayers nothing.” Johnson Controls experts will also help the Village of Lindenhurst develop innovative waste oil heating practices, converting used truck oil into efficient energy for the community. These product and process upgrades will allow the Village to prioritize sustainability while also addressing changing community needs. “This partnership with Johnson Controls will help the Village remain forwardthinking, allowing us to

explore new opportunities for efficiency,” said Village of Lindenhurst Trustee Pat Pichichero. “We are proud to be a leader in sustainability in the Long Island region and are dedicated to providing a community that will continue to serve citizens for generations to come. Tips For Effective Remote Learning

An increased reliance on virtual home instruction has many students rethinking their organizational strategies and daily school schedules. Learning at home is different from being in a traditional classroom environment, but with some effective strategies, students can persevere without missing a beat. • Stick To A Schedule. Many students are successful because they follow a schedule. The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning says that routines and schedules are important because they influence a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Children feel secure with schedules, which may help them recognize what’s expected of them. When learning at home, students should strive to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible, including bedtimes, wake times, hours devoted to learning, and time to get outside or engage in downtime activities. • Connect Live If Possible. There are many free tools

and resources available that enable teachers to provide live video lessons or to record them so students can watch them later. Similarly, social networking apps and virtual meeting programs enable students to connect digitally. This can be helpful for collaborative learning assignments or just to see a familiar face. • Stick To Tools That Work. Once students find apps or systems that work, they should stick with them, offers Khan Academy, an educational tutoring resource. There are many factors outside of one’s control during virtual instruction, but maintaining consistency with tools and schedules is one way to feel more confident and secure. • Check Student Accounts Frequently. Just like students, teachers may be learning as they go in regard to remote learning strategies. Students should be sure to check school email accounts or other places where teachers post assignments a few times per day so that they stay on top of all assignments

and are aware of due dates. • Reach Out To Instructors. Allegheny College suggests students contact their teachers if they are unsure of how to participate in remote learning environments. Ask questions about assignments, get clarification on key topics and be sure to tune into any remote chats or virtual “office hours.” • Stay In Touch With Guidance, If Needed. Remote learning is a new experience for many students, and there may be certain struggles or road blocks. It can be easy to grow frustrated with equipment failures or lack of in-person interaction. Schools employ qualified therapists and guidance counselors who are just a click, call or email away if issues need to be talked through. Students should utilize all resources made available to them. Virtual home instruction can be made even easier with some extra assistance and guidance.

How To Support Scholastic Athletes The 2020-21 school year promises to be one unlike any other today’s students, and even their parents and grandparents, have ever known. In March 2020, many schools were forced to abruptly cancel in-person instruction as government officials tried to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As the 201920 school year wound down and summer approached, school officials remained uncertain if they would reopen for in-person instruction in the fall, leaving student-athletes to wonder what would happen to fall sports seasons. The cancellation of in-person school sessions and extracurricular activities was hard on every student, and athletes have proven no exception. Many graduating seniors did not get a chance to compete alongside their teammates during spring sports season, bringing their scholastic athletic careers to an abrupt end. With the upcoming 2020-21 scholastic sports season in similar limbo, student-athletes in the class of 2021 might be worried that their own chances to compete are in jeopardy as well. In light of that, local communities can take steps to support scholastic athletes during an uncertain time. • Make a show of your support. Stayat-home measures prevented many schools from hosting traditional graduation ceremonies for graduating seniors. However, many communities found ways to honor their grads, and they can do the same for scholastic

athletes who are unsure about what the future holds. Purchase signs and/or T-shirts from school-based support organizations, erecting the signs in your yard so local athletes know they’re still supported, even if they can’t play. highlight videos. • Create Smartphones have made it possible to record nearly every one of life’s special moments and milestones, so chances are coaches, parents and neighbors have footage of local athletes competing in their sports. Parents, coaches and other fans can work together to create highlight videos for local scholastic sports teams, sharing the finished products via social media. These videos can make for great and lasting memories for student-athletes and even lift their spirits at a time when everyone can use a boost. • Host pep rallies. Organize a pep rally to honor and show support for local athletes. Work with school officials to ensure everyone celebrates safely. Such events are integral to studentathletes’ experience during typical sports seasons, so they can be a great way for communities to offer some semblance of normalcy to athletes who have worked hard to make the team. Student-athletes face uncertainty in regard to the 2020-21 scholastic sports season, but there are many ways for local communities to support their student-athletes, even if the games are postponed or canceled.

Many universities including Stony Brook University are moving forward with new instruction models as well as new safety precautions to help keep students and staff safe from the novel coronavirus. As we move forward in this new reality, Dr. Sharon Nachman, Chief of the Division of Pediatric

Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, has a few practical tips that may make the transition easier. Staying healthy is key. If you are feeling sick, get evaluated. COVID is only one of the illnesses we expect to see on the college campus. Other respiratory infections can occur, as can other medical problems! It’s better to get checked out than to pass COVID to family, people in

You will need to work harder to meet people, make friends and find others who are interested in the same things that you are, since many of the regular avenues to meet people will be

Fredericka Nelly Ellis, a former resident of Amityville, LI, died August 3, 2020 at her home in Columbia, Maryland. She was 97 years old. Nelly was born on May 20, 1923 in Brooklyn, New York to Alderman and Frederica (Shaw) Aska. She was employed by the Town of Babylon in N. Lindenhurst as a switchboard receptionist at the time of her retirement. This was accomplished while caring for her husband and family. She was a longtime active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran church while living in Amityville, LI. Her husband Frederick predeceased her on January 19, 2020. Survivors include her children Frederick D., Juanita V. and Gwendolyn M Ellis and six (6) grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Friday, August 7, 2020 at the funeral home conducted by The Reverend Eric Olsen. Interment followed in Amityville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.
