To test out their knowledge, the class stepped outside for some hands-on experiments. After filling buckets with water, students tested the laws of gravity by swinging their buckets upside down to see if the water would spill. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology
departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

All are welcome to come support the Maurer Foundation and enjoy a night of dancing, cocktails, fabulous food and more. Third, as a matter of fairness, when the government determines it will participate in actions taking place in floodplains, it must inform those who may be put at greater or continued risk. Funding for the Proposed Activity will be provided by the HUD Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBGDR) program for storm recovery activities in New York State.

The Village of Lindenhurst proposes to design and implement storm resiliency improvements and public access improvements at the southern end of Shore Road Park, in the Village of Lindenhurst, Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, NY. The Proposed Activity project would involve the southern 1.2 acres of the 10.2-acre Park and would include; construction of two rock sills along the shore placed at the low and high tide lines to provide protection during wave action at either tide cycle, a concrete sitting wall as part of the high tide rock sill, a gravel road with a gated entry at the southern end of S. Bay Street, living shoreline landscaping, a rain garden, extension of drainage outlets, removal of the top of the existing bulkheads along the shore of the eastern portion of the site (former private residential parcels), and placement of clean fill and riprap where needed. A total of approximately 1.2 acres of previously disturbed floodplain would be disturbed

IS CREMATION THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

During the summer months, students enrolled in Copiague School District’s elementary summer program have been getting creative during arts and crafts time. Incoming kindergarten students and kindergarten students practiced using
primary colors to make a beautiful rainbow. During the second week, students made jellyfish using tissue paper, ribbon and googly eyes. During the third week, the class read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and students had fun making their own hungry
caterpillars. They used paper plates, markers, googly eyes, pipe cleaners and rhinestones to create their caterpillars. Students in grades 1-3 used different materials to create fun and crafty projects. During the first week, students made
flowers using sponge paint, paper plates and craft sticks. During the second week, students created tie dye butterflies by making beautiful patterns on coffee filters and spraying the filters with water. The colors blended together to create a tie dye effect. In week three, the students

make their own unique solar systems filled with different planets, rocket ships, stars and aliens. Students used watercolor paint to create their planets and decorated the solar system using colored pencils, glitter and construction paper.
