A recent survey from the cloud-based voice and analytic supply chain solutions provider Voxware found that consumers were planning to change their approach to holiday shopping as early as August. The survey, which included 500 consumers in the United States and sought to determine how holiday shopping behaviors may be altered due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus, found that 76 percent of respondents intend to purchase more than half of their gifts online in 2020. TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below:

Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Completing an Eagle Scout Project is a challenging prospect on a good day, but during a Pandemic, it can be near-impossible. For months, Robert Zdenek of Troop 2000 had worked closely with Mary Cascone, Town Historian at the Town of Babylon History Museum, to design a periodspecific WWI-era bunk bed

for their Jail Exhibit. Five days prior to the Project’s installation, the Museum was closed due to COVID-19. Robert immediately took measures to keep the Project active and through the amazing support of the Town Historian and the Scouting Community, he was able to achieve the Rank of Eagle Scout. Robert

Long Island High School For The Arts Graduates Awarded Scholarships

As the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2020 bid farewell to their alma mater, 15 students walked away with scholarships to help them along their respective paths. These students were honored for a variety of achievements in their chosen disciplines. Kassidy Rieder of Lindenhurst, who will be attending Manhattan School of Music, earned the $2,500 Ramona’s Gift to Music Scholarship, as well as a $1,000 LIHSA Scholarship. Katelyn Harold of Bethpage, who will be attending Marymount Manhattan College, earned the $250 Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship, as well as a PTSA Award of Merit. In addition to Kassidy, four graduates earned a $1,000 LIHSA Scholarship:

Shannon Carlson of Harborfields, who will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design; Chase Leibowitz of Half Hollow Hills, who will be attending Berklee College of Music; Taylor Wagner of Massapequa, who will be attending Joffrey Ballet School; and Jasmine Wren of Amityville, who will be attending SUNY Buffalo. Nine students were awarded scholarships from the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). Five of them earned a PTSA Award of Merit, while four received a PTSA LOTUS Scholarship. Sacks for Soldiers

Rising juniors at Chaminade High School Matthew and Thomas Stueber have always been thinking about what their plans are after high school. When they were eight, the boys had the opportunity to attend a football game and tour the campus at West Point. This visit led Matt to setting the dream of attending a military academy and serving his country. Through the years Matthew and Thomas have always sent items the soldiers were in need of to different

charity organizations. After speaking with an Army Ranger after a recent deployment Matt realized what the soldiers really miss are those comfort items that we all take for granted, from there the idea of Sacks for Soldiers took hold. The goal is to send comfort items, mixed in with necessities, directly to the soldiers who are deployed. The Sacks for Soldiers website is: https:// sites.google.com/view/ sacks-for-soldiers/home. Support has come from the Chamiade Football Family

Lindenhurst Student Artists Graduate With Long Island High School For The Arts Kassidy Rieder and Dante Signona of the Lindenhurst UFSD joined their fellow graduates in the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2020 in overcoming significant obstacles to celebrate their commencement during the COVID crisis. The gifted young artisans faced the situation with the same poise and professionalism with which they enter any performance: The show must – and did – go on.

Kassidy, Dante and their families took to their cars for a ceremonial commencement parade, during which they were honored by LIHSA teachers, administrators and BOCES Board members. Practicing safe social distancing protocols, the grads gathered as best they could to bid farewell to their beloved alma mater, and to collectively look ahead to the bright future that awaits them. “We could not be more proud of our brilliant and

talented graduates,” said LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker. “In addition to their hard work, day in and day out, in honing their respective crafts throughout the year, they have risen remarkably to the immense challenges the world currently faces. IS CREMATION THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.
