Dawn McGrath Of Educational Bus Transportation Receives Golden Merit Award From NSTA Lindenhurst resident Dawn McGrath, an Operations Manager with Educational Bus Transportation in Copiague, recently received The Golden Merit Award from the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) at its annual meeting and convention in Niagara Falls, New York. Established in 1969, NSTA’s Golden Merit Award recognizes school bus employees for their achievements in safety, driver training, business practice, vehicle maintenance, and superior service to their school district, community, and pupil transportation industry. “Dawn McGrath is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are

paramount to excellence in student transportation,” stated Chloe Williams, Co-Chair of the NSTA Awards Committee. “It gives me great pleasure to present her with The Golden Merit Award for her many contributions to Educational Bus Transportation and the school districts that benefit from her expertise.” McGrath began her career in 1988 as a school bus driver with Educational Bus Transportation before moving on to dispatcher and eventually serving as Operations Manager. Childcare To Become More Affordable For Many Low And Moderate Income Families

Suffolk County residents got a boost in paying for childcare. Beginning August 1, 2022, as part of the 202223 New York State budget, families earning up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level will qualify for assistance. Previously, the income standard set by the State for childcare subsidies was 200 percent. Assistance will be administered locally by the Suffolk and Nassau counties departments of Social Services. “A strong childcare system helps buttress a strong economy,” said Adrian Fassett, C.E.O. of the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., a Patchogue-based not-forprofit that own and operates Way to Grow Child Care Learning Center in East Patchogue. “The reality is that working people can’t get to their jobs if they don’t have a quality, safe place to send their children. More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.” According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State. “I know firsthand how a lack of childcare can hurt

your career, your family and your future, as a working mother when I was forced to leave my job to care for my child,” Governor Hochul said. “These historic investments in New York State’s childcare system will allow us to forge a new path forward for parents, especially mothers. It is the right thing to do, the moral thing to do, and will supercharge our economic recovery and support working families. Childcare is an essential service, and in New York, we will continue to do everything in our power to make sure more working families have access to it.” Parents can be eligible if they are employed and earn no more than the 300 percent threshold, are enrolled in an education or training program, in mental

health or substance abuse treatment, or are in an emergency situation of short duration. For example, a family of four can earn up to $83,250 annually and still be eligible for subsidized childcare. Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum recently released 700 Painted Lady butterflies at its annual Butterfly Release, aimed to educate Long Islanders on the benefits the beloved insects bring to the environment, as well as support the species. Led by Fred Hoffmann, Pinelawn’s Grounds Supervisor, who manages the 500-acre property, over 300 community members gathered on Sunday, July 17 in the park’s vibrant Rose Garden to learn more about how these beautiful pollinators contribute to the park’s landscape. “Beyond the butterflies’ obvious beauty, they also play a pivotal role in supporting the landscape,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “Butterflies act as important pollinators that allow our many gardens, and those of the surrounding community, to prosper. In return, we make an effort to support the species by providing an optimal environment for them, including milkweed, echinacea (Purple Coneflower), and over 24 acres of natural meadows.” As part of an ongoing program offering free events for Pinelawn families and the Long Island community, the organization recognizes the significance of butterflies among the bereaved. Kristyn Hovanec, Director of Community Outreach at Pinelawn, “Butterflies have long been a symbol of those we love who have passed on. This event not only educates the families about the importance of butterflies within our ecosystem, but also allows them to feel connected to those they are missing.” In addition to the onsite

emotions out and then I can go get them a cup of coffee or something to eat. We even do their laundry; we have facilities where they can shower. It’s simple but some days it’s what they need most.” Currently, RMHC is looking to ﬁll 100 volunteer positions, in New Hyde Park at Cohen’s Children Hospital and in Stony Brook at the Children’s Hospital there. In the two years since the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) launched its Economic Inclusion Initiative during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effort has grown into a model of success for others to follow. Food-Insecure Seniors Are The Focus Of Fair Sponsored By Long Island Cares And PSEG Long Island Long Island ‘s foodinsecure seniors are the focus of the Senior Resource Fair taking place Friday, August 12 at Long Island Cares’ Center for Community Engagement in Hauppauge. The fair is co-sponsored by Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank and PSEG Long Island. The purpose of the fair is three-fold: provide increased access to nutritious food, offer takehome fresh produce at a special “farmer’s market,” and expose seniors to advocacy efforts on their behalf and the numerous resources available to them. The event takes place 9 a.m. – noon at the Center for Community

Engagement, 75 Davids Drive, Hauppauge. Agencies and organizations presenting to seniors about their services and products include: • AARP • Aetna Medical Care • Alzheimer’s Association • Association for Mental Health and Wellness • Clear Captions • Common Health Care • HWCLI/SNAP • Island Hills Chorus • Melissa’s Wish • Northwell Health (Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education) • Ombudsman Program

• PSEG Long Island • Rebuilding Together “Coming together to meet the needs of Long Islanders is at the core of both Long Island Cares and PSEG Long Island’s missions,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, Chief Programs Officer at Long Island Cares. “We are grateful for the ongoing partnership of PSEG Long Island in ensuring that seniors are provided with the resources needed to live independently and healthy.” “Supporting the communities where we live and work is part of PSEG Long Island’s mission,” said John Keating, PSEG Long Island’s manager of Economic and

Community Development. “We are pleased to partner with Long Island Cares to help reach specific groups of our neighbors who may be struggling with food insecurity. These resource fairs will provide important education about assistance programs, as well as nutritious, locally sourced produce and other food, to help eliminate hunger from their lives.” Long Island Cares began its outreach to seniors in 2020, with its Support Our Seniors (SOS) program. In 2021 more than 18,000 food-insecure seniors at senior centers and housing authorities were served 166,000 meals. Both the number of seniors and meals served represented

a 28% increase over 2020. Long Island Cares provides emergency food and supplies to 250,000 Long Islanders suffering from food insecurity. In addition to the food bank location in Hauppauge and the more than 300 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other locations it provides food to, Long Island Cares operates five of its own food pantries, in Huntington Station, Lindenhurst, Hampton Bays, Freeport and Bethpage. PSEG Long Island operates the Long Island Power Authority’s transmission and distribution system under a long-term contract. PSEG Long Island is
