TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

Legislator Tom Muratore Warns – “Be Prepared for Hurricanes” The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, 2020, and will end on November 30, 2020. Once again, Legislator Tom Muratore would like to remind residents of Hurricane Preparedness. “Most of this year’s focus has been on the Coronavirus pandemic and “flattening the curve,” but we must still remember that hurricane season is upon us and won’t stop because of Covid-19,” stated Legislator Muratore. “It’s important to be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best.” Know Your Risk and What to Do • Contact your local emergency management office to learn about evacuation routes and emergency plans. • Get additional information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (visit fema.gov and m.fema.gov from your mobile device for information), Ready Campaign (https://www. ready. gov/ hurricanes), the American Red Cross (https:// www.redcross.org / store/ preparedness/ stormpreparation/hurricanes? prefn1=IsCourse&prefv1 = f a l s e & p r e f n 2 =isDistributor&prefv2= false)andNOAA’sNational HurricaneCenter(nhc. noaa.gov). • Buy flood insurance. Anyone can get flooded, even if you don’t live in a designated flood zone. There is a 30-day waiting period before activation of flood insurance policies. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. • Inquire about emergency plans and procedures at your child’s school (when they return) and at your workplace. • Make a family disaster plan that includes out-of-town contacts and locations to reunite if you become separated. Be sure everyone knows home, work and cell phone

numbers, and how to call 9-1-1. • Assemble a disaster supplies kit with food, water, medical supplies, battery-powered radio and NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, batteries, flashlights, and other items that will allow you to get by for 3 days after a hurricane hits. • Gather important documents such as birth and marriage certificates, social security cards, passports, wills, deeds, and financial and insurance records. Store them in a fire and flood safe location or safe deposit box. Prepare Your Home before the Storm • Install permanent wooden or metal storm shutters or board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood. • Install metal straps or hurricane clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. • Trim trees and clear rain gutters and downspouts. • Plan ahead for protection of pets and livestock. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. be given as to the regulation of 24 hour business operations and other retail businesses that operate between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., excluding bars, taverns, and restaurants that are otherwise regulated by special permit from the Village Board of Appeals. The Board of Trustees enacts this moratorium so that it might have sufficient opportunity to evaluate the permitted uses in the Business District and their hours of operation and determine whether the hours of operation of permitted uses in the Business District should be statutorily amended, altered, modified, expanded or repealed as part and parcel of a plan to continue to revitalize the area without negatively impacting its residential neighbors. A moratorium would also permit the Board of Trustees to consider whether buffer zones or distance restrictions are appropriate. This moratorium will provide an opportunity for the Village Board of Trustees to evaluate the Code changes needed without the possibility of new businesses opening that might conflict with the plan being developed. The Village Board has, therefore, determined that a moratorium be established prohibiting any new permitted uses which operate between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. in the Business District. This moratorium shall be geographically limited in application to all properties within the Business District zoning classification. In establishing this moratorium the Board has also considered:

Section 1. Purpose. The purpose of this local law is to promote and protect the public health, safety and welfare of the Village of Lindenhurst, by enacting a local law which establishes a moratorium on certain uses in the Business District between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. The Village of Lindenhurst has put forth a significant effort to support and revitalize the Business District. As part of these efforts the Village has completed numerous infrastructure improvements to attract business and enhance the appearance of the downtown, including the addition of brick pavers, road reconstruction, drainage, parking, decorative street lighting, planters, and recreational and cultural opportunities. Numerous new projects have enhanced the appearance and character of the Business District Village wide. The Board of Trustees has also enacted certain zoning amendments to create a more desirable and attractive Business District including the addition of multiple family residences. The Board of Trustees finds that careful consideration is also required to ensure the compatibility of Business District with the surrounding residential community. The competitive local business environment is spawning more and more businesses remaining open continuously for 24 hours. The Board is concerned that given the Business District’s close proximity to residential areas that certain businesses of this nature are of such a character that they will detrimentally impact the quality of life of the surrounding residents between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. The Board finds that such 24 hour continuous uses are often the source of quality of life complaints from residential neighbors concerning noise, littering, traffic, lighting, and privacy. These complaints negatively impact a community. As such, particular consideration must

To ensure physical compatibility with surrounding uses. 6. The need to reduce noise, litter, traffic and lighting which detrimentally impacts residential areas adjoining Business District property. 7. To encourage historic preservation. Section 2. Prohibitions. Any

This local law shall not apply to bars, taverns or restaurants which are otherwise regulated by the special permit authority or existing businesses uses in operation at the effective date of this local law to the extent such uses are not in compliance herewith and otherwise legally permitted. The Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst shall have the power to vary or modify the application of the provisions hereof after public hearing by resolution of the Village Board, in its absolute and sole discretion, provided that such variance, or modification is consistent with the Village zoning plan, and with the health, safety, morals and general welfare of the Village. Section 5. Validity. If any section, sentence, clause or phrase of this law is held to be invalid or unconstitutional by any court of competent jurisdiction, then said holding shall in no way affect the validity of the remaining portions of this law. Section 6. Effective Date. This law shall become effective upon filing in the office of the Secretary of State.

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is continuing its mission to support homeownership for those most in need on Long Island, while adapting to COVID-19 and government restrictions to reduce the spread of the pandemic. The organization temporarily closed its ReStore Warehouse in mid-March and shifted to an online shopping model with scheduled curbside pickup. ReStore is a retail outlet open to the public to shop for quality donated new and slightly used building materials. ReStore is run by a small staff and many dedicated volunteers that help organize inventory, unload and organize donations, and prepare merchandise for the sales floor. All

proceeds directly support the organization and cover the administrative costs of Habitat Suffolk. During Phase II, Habitat Suffolk re-opened the physical ReStore location after implementing safety protocols such as mask requirements, social distancing, limited occupancy, and cashless payments to ensure customer and staff safety, while continuing to offer the option of home shopping and curbside pickup. “I am so proud of our team’s dedication and ability to overcome challenges and adjust to the realities of COVID-19, while honoring the Habitat mission of bringing people together to build homes and provide communities

Johnson Controls Partners With The Village Of Lindenhurst To Lead Sustainability Charge In Suffolk County Lindenhurst Village Mayor Michael Lavorata recently announced the Village of Lindenhurst has contracted with Johnson Controls in a major Energy Savings Performance contract. With goals that include sourcing project funding, addressing deferred maintenance and setting the standard for efficiency, the Village will undergo a community-wide initiative for sustainability. The $5.8 million Energy Savings Performance Contract is guaranteed by Johnson Controls to generate $8.3 million in energy cost savings over 20 years, helping the Village achieve longterm budget neutrality. The project will consist of numerous Village-wide

cutting edge infrastructure improvements such as solar energy systems, LED municipal street lighting and other renewable energy technologies. Pat Pichichero, the Village of Lindenhurst Trustee in charge of the project said “This is a winwin project. The taxpayers benefit from a host of new projects and it costs nothing.” Mayor Lavorata noted the ESPC encompasses 11 buildings across the Village, two parks and a marina. LED lighting will be installed within municipality facilities and in outdoor community spaces, generating $31,000 in lighting rebates. To further maximize the Village’s energy efficiency

efforts, Johnson Controls will replace the Rainbow Community Center’s aged boiler with a new high efficiency boiler, as well as install electric car charging stations at Village Hall. For energy renewability, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems will be constructed on facility rooftops, as well as the rooftop of a new carport in the Village’s commuter rail parking lot. “Sustainability is a pillar of our work, and we are honored to power the Village’s mission for a greener future,” said Chris Fitzsimmons, Johnson Controls account executive. “Our experts have the deep industry experience to provide constituents with a comprehensive approach,

delivering infrastructure improvements to maximize their commitment to both energy efficiency and their citizens. Through consistent collaboration with the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst through an ESPC, the project will be paid over time through its guaranteed savings, empowering the Village to focus resources on community wellness and services.” Johnson Controls experts will also help the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst develop innovative waste oil heating practices, converting used truck oil into efficient energy for the community. These product and process upgrades

will allow the Village to prioritize sustainability while also addressing changing community needs. “This partnership with Johnson Controls will help the Village remain forwardthinking, allowing us to explore new opportunities for efficiency,” said Trustee Pat Pichichero. “We are proud to be a leader in sustainability in the Long Island region and are dedicated to providing a community that will continue to serve citizens for generations to come. From energy updates to our Rainbow Community Center to new LED lighting in the marina, these improvements will help the Village remain a thriving community

At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.

William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

There are funeral homes that simply accept the money and do not guarantee any price. Thus the interest on the account must pay for funeral home increases and cash advance increases. Some funeral home do not guarantee cash advances and set the money aside in an interest bearing account and allow the interest to offset that funeral home costs and still charge families for the increase in cash advances. This policy may cause the family to pay hundreds of dollars at the time the funeral actually takes place. For instance a grave opening in St. Charles Cemetery was $350.00 in 1984 is now $1995.00 Monday thru Friday, $2475.00 on Saturday. Thus if the funeral home where you prepay your funeral does not guarantee the cemetery costs you will owe $2475.00 for a Saturday funeral at St. Charles Cemetery.
