McDonald’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony McDonald’s Owners and Operators Tony Liedtke and Jaime Liedtke hosted community leaders and friends for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, July 23 for the Grand Re-Opening of the beautifully modernized McDonald’s located at 334 East Montauk Highway. Lindenhurst High School’s Josie Grande sang the National Anthem and Father Frank from Our Lady of Perpetual Help delivered an Invocation. Some of the community leaders that were in attendance were NYS Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Town Councilmembers DuWayne Gregory, Anthony Manetta, and Terence McSweeney, Lindenhurst Village Mayor Michael Lavorata, Lindenhurst Chamber President Jo Ann Boettcher, Lindenhurst Fire Department Asst Chiefs Jonathan Cutolo and Bob Santos, and First Precinct Community Liason Officers Nicholas Schieda, Russ Aue and Officer Dara. The highlight of the ribbon cutting was a UPS driver who pulled over on the side of Montauk Highway directly in front of McDonald’s and held his hat over his heart for the duration of the
National Anthem, a very moving sight for many of us. After the ribbon-cutting, attendees reconvened inside the McDonald’s for refreshments and McCafe bakery sweets. As a thank you, parting gifts were given to all attendees. A major reinvestment was made to renovate this restaurant to best serve the community and its needs. The restaurant has been re-launched; offering a modernized guest experience that will meet the needs of the community. Modern decor and new technology offering table service and self-order kiosks create a modern guest experience. The 24-hour drive-thru offers convenience to customers at all hours of the day, especially for those with small children and the elderly not wishing to get out of their car. A higher emphasis is being placed on hospitality by focusing on greeting customers and ensuring a clean and welcoming environment. The restaurant reopened on June 10th after being closed for 6 weeks. An exciting calendar of events took place to celebrate the Grand Reopening. The “Weekend Bash” started with a WBAB /102.3 van visit on Friday
evening which included games and giveaways. A “Midnight Madness” event followed where 100 Big Mac cards, each valid for 10 complimentary Big Macs, were distributed to the first 100 cars. On Saturday, children and their families were entertained by a magician where balloon animals were given to children. A DJ also entertained with a cast of characters which included Space Jam’s Bugs Bunny. The Lindenhurst Fire Fighter heroes made an appearance on Sunday where customers were able to try on the firefighter gear. Fire Safety information, fire hats, and other giveaways were distributed. Families are able to get a complimentary 5 x 7 photo of their child on the fire truck when they go to Stand Out From the Crowd Marketing on Facebook or Instagram and like/ follow this page, which will include photos of all of the Grand ReOpening events. To conclude the festivities, there was a Face/ Arm Painting, along with music and characters for the children on Sunday afternoon. Most importantly, the Lindenhurst McDonald’s is happy to be back to serve the community!

Long Island Flute Studio recently announced a new partnership with MusicLink Foundation Inc. The partnership will allow the Long Island Flute Studio to offer two need based scholarships for private flute lessons for the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year. “This is great opportunity and removes barriers making individualize private flute instruction achievable,” Nichole Arce, Owner/Teacher at Long Island Flute Studio. “We partner with teachers who serve and invest in their community”

For the first time in more than a year, we were feeling some hope, or at least cautious optimism, that the pandemic could be over, and we were moving to our new normal. However, I have been following the news that a new mutation of the COVID-19 virus, called Delta, could bring it back, and it might be even stronger. According to reports in Newsday, there has been an uptick in COVID-19 cases in the past few weeks, which is unsettling at best. The fast-spreading Delta variant is of concern, and, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shared, this has
quickly become a pandemic of the unvaccinated. Although it has been disturbing to learn of breakthrough infections, the data shows that the vaccine is highly effective against getting COVID-19, and, most importantly, it is nearly always effective against severe illness and death. Virtually 99% of the recent hospitalizations and deaths of COVID-19 are among those who were not yet fully vaccinated. Getting vaccinated helps protect you, and your family members, especially if they are unable to get vaccinated, like children under 12-years old. Please, also remember
to exercise caution if you are unvaccinated, or suffer from immunerelated health conditions, by wearing a mask when at indoor venues, or in large, outdoor crowds. As well, let us all continue to exercise basic public health measures, such as hand washing, social distancing, and following up with a physician if you feel any symptoms. Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, located in Farmingdale, recently hosted a series of butterfly release events as part of its ongoing community education program. The event was designed to teach attendees about the beauty and importance of butterflies within our environment, and offer a quiet, symbolic remembrance for those who have lost a loved one. “Butterflies are such an important part of our ecosystem. They help pollinate plants and simply make people happy,” said Fred Hoffmann, Grounds Supervisor, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “We hope all our Pinelawn families enjoyed the butterflies and were able to take a moment to celebrate their loved ones surrounded in the
beauty of our grounds.” More than 100 people gathered at the Memorial Park and Arboretum for the interactive session. Individuals, couples, children, and grandchildren were able to create a butterfly craft and release Painted Lady butterflies among the park’s colorful, peaceful gardens. Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum also brought the event directly to the residents of Sunrise Senior Living. Residents and their families were invited to take part in two sessions, with one specially designed for memory care residents. These educational events are free of charge and open to the public. BUTTERFLY RELEASE - Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, located in Farmingdale, recently hosted over 100 families at its annual Butterfly Release where more than 400 Painted Lady Butterflies were set free in the 500-acre park and arboretum to help pollinate its flowering landscape, and offer a quiet, symbolic remembrance for those who have lost a loved one. Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ To And From Covid-19 Vaccine Appointments United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Located in Southaven County Park in Brookhaven (between exits 57 & 58 off Route 27) is the home of Long Island Live Steamers, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. They operate for the education and enjoyment of the public, and to preserve the history and wonderment of the glory days of railroading. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun!

Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of
autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). At all locations, there will be a contactless drive-thru area, as well as collection bins, set up from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. as follows:

Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal
burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD
advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or
seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold
compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such
instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
