A Message From The Lindenhurst Village Board
The Lindenhurst Village Board would like to take a moment to recognize the enormous revitalization of our Downtown Business District – before, during, and in the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic. When our Downtown Master Plan was developed, there was no section that covered “Global Pandemic Contingency Plan”. However, thanks to the efforts of many – residents, business owners, and our team at Village Hall – Lindenhurst stayed strong, continued to grow and flourish, and our Downtown is now more vibrant than ever! When the Pandemic hit our Lindenhurst community, our lives forever changed. We lost loved ones; we had health scares; we had to “zoom” into new ways of doing business and existing socially; and local restaurants and businesses had to think outside the box so their businesses would not fail. As usual in our greatest times of need, Lindenhurst rallied, and offered help and support to these restaurants and businesses. Early on, the community bought gift cards and placed on-line and take-out orders, while the Village worked
within County, State and Federal guidelines to help in new and innovative ways. This included the creation of the Community Dining Area at Village Square Park, and more significantly, issuing temporary permits allowing outdoor seating on Village property, or in the Village right-of-way, and allowing outdoor structures and tents. These temporary allowances, along with the Governor loosening up the rules and regulations on take-out alcohol, gave our local restaurants and businesses a life-line while their indoor capacity was limited, and we are so proud of the partnerships that were created between our Village government and our Lindenhurst business community. However, now that life is coming back around, we also need to start getting back around to the proper business environment. Restaurants and local businesses, and even we here at Village Hall, can now welcome patrons inside. While some changes that were made can safely be maintained throughout the rest of these summer months, such as some outdoor seating areas, most
of the tents and structures cannot. Most were put up only with the allowance of a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy by the Village Building Department, and have an expiration date (approximately the middle of August for most). We recognize that we have all benefited from the addition of these structures – our businesses financially, and our residents socially – but these temporary areas and structures just don’t meet State and Village building requirements to become permanent. We hope that is understood as the time now approaches for these temporary tents and structures to come down. This Lindenhurst Village Board remains committed to the growth of our existing Downtown businesses, future businesses, and will continue to look for ways to mutually support them, and the direction we have planned for the Downtown. We need to get back on track with our focus on the Downtown Master Plan, continue to work with the Chamber of Commerce and other community/business groups to bring new events to our Downtown, and continue the growth!

On Saturday, July 10th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined in celebrating Jarred Navarro as he became Lindenhurst’s newest
Eagle Scout- joining a long list of homegrown Eagle Scouts who have dedicated themselves to giving back to their community. For his project, Jarred constructed
an informational board to be used by students and staff in the Lindenhurst High School’s nature garden.

Legislator McCaffrey Honors Healthcare Hero
On Thursday, July 15th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey honored Karen Vassiliou, of Lindenhurst, for her selection as Legislative District 14 Healthcare Hero of the Year! Karen was born and raised in Lindenhurst, and knew from an early age that she wanted to grow up to help people. Prior to COVID-19, Karen served in Good Samaritan Hospital’s cardiac telemetry unit, however she began work with the neuro step down unit in March of 2020. This transition made her one part of an amazing team of hospital staff that worked to convert medical floors and telemetry floors to Intensive care units to help accommodate the needs of the community during the pandemic, much of which was done by utilizing team nursing and working extra twelve hours shifts for
months to meet the needs of their patients. While working, Karen contracted COVID-19which she described as the worst illness of her life. Yet she overcame, returning to work following
quarantine and continuing to comfort sick patients. Congratulations and thank you Karen, as well as all of our medical professionals for their selfless dedication to preserving our health.

Furthermore, the district introduced bilingual guidance counselors at the secondary level, mental health professionals districtwide, a director of special education and pupil personnel services and an assistant superintendent for elementary curriculum and instruction to bring more consistency to the elementary buildings. Daniel E. Giordano, superintendent of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District for the last eight years, has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2022. “The job of the superintendent is extremely important,” said Giordano. “Because I have such great respect for this board of education, I believe that the right thing to do is to allow them the maximum amount of time to fill the position.” Giordano began his career in Lindenhurst in 1997 as an assistant principal at Lindenhurst High School. After serving in that role for five years, he was appointed principal in 2002. In April 2014, the board of education unanimously appointed Giordano to become the district’s superintendent of schools, a role he assumed officially in July of that year. Board of Education Vice

On Saturday, June 26th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined the Town of Babylon for a small ceremony dedicating the marina at Gilgo Beach as the “Congressman Pete King Marina.” The marina will serve as a reminder of his work, particularly the substantial efforts he made to secure Hurricane Sandy relief totaling $60.4 billion for Long Island’s ravaged south shore communities. With that same fortitude, Congressman King became a champion of the military, its veterans, first responders, and many more of our most vulnerable populations.
The renaming serves as a beacon of gratitude for the many times in which Congressman King would cross the aisle to best serve his constituents over his nearly three decades in office. On June 25th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey presented certificates to Babylon Elementary School kindergartners Noah Smith, Violet Uttendorfer, Romely Tzerembo, Alicia Gimberlein, and Theodore Baxter for placing in
the Suffolk County Legislature’s Be Pool Smart Poster Contest! The contest, designed to promote water safety at home and in open water, has been held annually since 2007 and is aimed at drowning prevention. Violet, who is holding
her poster, was one of the competition’s finalists! Babylon Elementary School teacher Ms. Elizabeth Losito and Principal Travis Davey were also present for the ceremony, and did an amazing job getting their students involved in this initiative.

NY Senator John Brooks Volunteers at L.I. Cares/Harry Chapin Foodbank
Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) spent several hours Tuesday morning, July 20th, volunteering his time at the Lindenhurst facility of L.I. Cares/Harry Chapin Foodbank as part of his ongoing mission to further understand the needs of his district. Senator Brooks met with Program Coordinator Marc Leonelli and several other members of the L.I. Cares staff to discuss their ongoing fight against hunger and the multileveled logistical operations they oversee daily. As part of his visit, Senator Brooks also spent time assisting with the vital work of L.I. Cares, stacking shelves and putting together care packages for customers who came through. L.I. Cares was founded in
1980 by singer-songwriter and activist Harry Chaplin to assist Long Island’s hungry and food insecure populations. In the 40 years since its founding, it has done that and more, working tirelessly to help countless Long Islanders every year. L.I. Cares distributes tens of millions of pounds of food and supplies annually to those in need. The life-saving work of this organization has resulted in the distribution of more than 1.4 million meals, helping more than 230,000 Long Island residents feed themselves and their families. “Seeing first-hand the work that L.I. Cares does day in and day out was a sobering experience,” said Senator Brooks. “It is easy to look past problems
when you are fortunate enough not to experience them yourself, but seeing the extent to which food insecurity and hunger hurts so many in our community made clear how serious of an issue this is on Long Island. I am thankful to those at L.I. Cares for allowing me the opportunity to visit their facility and for the crucial work they do. Their work saves lives, and I am committed to doing all I can to help address food insecurity and hunger here at home.” L.I. Construction Of Solar Carport Completed
The Village of Lindenhurst is excited to announce that the construction of a 362kW Solar PV Carport at the LIRR Commuter Parking Lot has been completed. This state-of-the-art, renewable energy solar carport project is part of the Village’s Energy Solutions Project in partnership with Johnson Controls, a leader in energyefficient technology. The partnership is creating opportunities for the Village to produce clean,
renewable energy at various Village-owned facilities, and the production of solar energy at the Commuter Lot is a key part of this sustainability commitment. Once PSEG completes the hook up to the grid, the solar panels on the carport are expected to generate enough electricity to power about 50 homes and will reduce the Village’s carbon footprint. Trustee Patrick Pichichero said, “This is an ideal location because
the sun is unobstructed here, and it will also offer our commuters the added benefit of vehicle protection in inclement weather. I believe it is incumbent upon us in Village Government to utilize solar technology, transitioning us away from fossil fuels, and creating a positive impact on the environment. We are proud to be taking these steps to achieve local environmental goals, at no cost to our taxpayers.”

SCPD Chief Of Detectives Honored At Walk-Out
On Thursday, July 8th, Chief Gerard Gigante, head of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Detectives Bureau, walked out of Police Headquarters for the final time. Chief Gigante spent more than three decades protecting and serving the residents of Suffolk County, including our very own First Precinct- of which he was the Commanding Officer during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. During his 36 year career, Chief Gigante led numerous high profile units and took part in
some of the most grueling cases to face the county, including the Department’s investigative response to MS-13 violence in 2016 and 2017, which ultimately led to the timely arrests of dozens of murderers . Chief Gigante also created the County’s first-ever permanent precinct-based gang team; the County’s first-ever countywide gun and gang unit to combat street violence; and formed the region’s first-of-itskind Human Trafficking Unit. His dedication and professionalism earned him 35 awards during his
tenure including being named the first-ever Cop of the Year for the Third Precinct in 1990. Chief Gigante is also a proud member of the Lindenhurst Knights of Columbus Council #794. The Long Island Bluegrass & Roots Music Festival is an afternoon of traditional Bluegrass, Americana, and Roots Music, plus workshops,
food and beverage vendors, and fun! Bluegrass music workshops are available featuring performers from the main stage bands. There is also a hosted ‘Jam Area’ for those who play bluegrass music on any level and want to bring an instrument so they can join in during the afternoon. Tickets are $20.00 for General Admission, $15.00 for Military, Disabled, BACCA Members, and teens 12-16. Children 11 and under are Free.
