BABYLON SOLDIER RIDE BACK IN ACTION - On Friday, July 15, 2022, the Town of Babylon welcomed the Wounded Warrior Project back to Town Hall for the 15th annual Babylon Soldier Ride. “We have worked very hard to create new programs and opportunities for medically frail children,” said founder Bob Policastro, who opened the first home in East Moriches in 2000, and named after his daughter, who suffered severe brain damage during birth. “Over the years we’ve received tremendous support from Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, and have worked in collaboration with IGHL, Independent Group Home Living, to provide these services. We now operate more than 50 homes, multiple day programs and many other supportive programs for individual with intellectual disabilities.” Another affiliate of the Kinexion network is East End Disability Associates (EEDA) in Riverhead, which also provides support and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This organization formed in 1992 by a small group of parents who were active advocates for their children and believed that everyone has the right to
Rounding out the seven affiliates of Kinexion is Maryhaven, whose vision is to foster a community whereby people with special needs are safe, accepted and supported. Village Honors Memory Of Evelyn Chivvis A tree has been planted in Lindenhurst Village Square Park to honor the memory of long-time Village resident, Evelyn Chivvis. Mrs. Chivvis was a charter member of the Mayor’s Beautification Society, and served as its Chairperson for many years. As Chairperson, Evelyn oversaw many fundraising activities, as well as the planting
of colorful flowers and shrubs, painting planters and benches, and added her special touch to many beautification projects throughout the Village. In addition to the Mayor’s Beautification Society, Evelyn also served as the Secretary to the Village Board during Mayor Lynda Distler’s term of office. Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle said, “We could

Smiles and cheers from family and friends welcomed a distinguished group of graduating seniors on June 24 to a sun-covered field for the Lindenhurst High School commencement ceremony honoring the Class of 2022 and celebrating their collective accomplishments. As “Pomp and Circumstance” carried through the air, the excited graduates took the Edward F. Kienle Memorial Field for the last time as students of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. The commencement exercises then began with the national anthem performed by the senior music students under the direction of Charles Pramnieks. Valedictorian Atahan Yetimoglu then took the stage and reflected on what his fellow classmates have overcome and the great things they will achieve next in life. “Together we will persevere through all of the obstacles that life has in store for us because I know the Class of 2022, and I know that we are all destined for greatness. I am proud of what we have accomplished in such unprecedented times, and I am proud of us for what we will achieve in the future.”
Continuing the ceremony, Salutatorian Randy Ramsuchit delivered an insightful speech, sharing the importance of being present and appreciating the moment. He wished his classmates well as they move on to their next steps in life. “We, the Class of 2022, are capable of accomplishing anything we put our minds to,” he said. “Our journey as high schoolers ends here, but a new, unique path will be shaped for each one of us. I am proud to be a part of this class, and to all my classmates, we made it.” Superintendent of Schools Daniel E. Giordano then shared a message with students about the importance of gratitude and practicing it each day. “I hope that as you move on throughout your lives,” he said, “you do so with gratitude in your heart. Be grateful for your families who have worked so hard to give you every opportunity. Principal Dr. Candice Brodie began her address by recognizing several students who would be entering the armed services following graduation. As she continued, she spoke to the great hopes she has for this outstanding class and their future as she reflected on her favorite book from her childhood, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. “You are about to break out of the cocoon of high school and become, what will you become?” she asked. “The answer is, whatever you want to be. I know enough about you to know that is the truth. You have perseverance, grit, tenacity, strength, heart and knowledge. All of these years and all of that hunger made that true. Out of that cocoon will fly doctors, urban planners, teachers, construction workers, auto mechanics, fashion designers, you name it. They are sitting before us.” Members of the Board of Education then began the presentation of diplomas. After the final diplomas were presented, cheers and applause echoed across the field as students emphatically threw their caps to the sky, exiting the field as alumni of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District.
On Friday, July 15, 2022, the Town of Babylon welcomed the Wounded Warrior Project back to Town Hall for the 15th annual Babylon Soldier Ride. Hosted by Councilman and Veterans Advisory Chair DuWayne Gregory, this was the first time in two years that the town has been able to host a full community ride as was done prior to the pandemic. This year, the town helped raise over $100,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project with some of the proceeds going to Project9Line, an Islip-based nonprofit that serves veterans here in Suffolk County. About 30
wounded warriors from across the country, and over 1,000 members of our community participated in the 25-mile ride from Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst to Overlook Beach out on the barrier island. Among the riders was Supervisor Schaffer, Councilman Gregory, and many of our government partners from the county and state. “It is crucial for us to provide support for the brave men and women who have risked so much for our freedom,” said Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “The pandemic forced us to reduce the size and capacity
