Lindenhurst Middle School eighth graders Kate Sniffen, Melina Canales, Isha Garcia, Enzo Britos, who were enrolled in Erik Eve’s Honors social studies class, were recognized with an honorable mention designation in the Private Frontier Essay Contest.
The national competition’s topic involved entrepreneurs reconsidering what private enterprise might do better than the government. Students were asked the following questions: Is this the future? Is society better served with greater involvement from
entrepreneurs? If so, who pays and who profits? The students offered unique and thoughtful perspectives, and each received a $50 prize for their honorable mentions. The district congratulates them on this achievement.

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is offering families of victims and first responders to add loved ones’ names to its 9-11 Memorial as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks on America. The Memorial monument, located within Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, was erected in 2003 and currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and individuals who worked to rescue and recover the victims at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. Family members who lost loved ones are encouraged to submit their names using a special form with required information and attestation. The deceased’s full name and
optionally, their profession or role, will be added to the memorial. All forms must be submitted and arrive by email or mail by July 31, 2021. The form is available online at https:// CCLongIsland.org/9-11memorial/. Those who lost their lives later due to health conditions and exposure at Ground Zero and lower Manhattan are also eligible. “As we approach the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. Our memorial wall at Holy Rood Cemetery is a place of solace, reflection and tribute to the lives that were tragically lost. Located in a specially designated area at the cemetery, the Memorial will be the site of a special outdoor mass which will be presided over by Diocese of Rockville Centre Bishop
John Barres on September 11th this year,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island’s 9-11 memorial is a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks. Inscription on the memorial is provided by Catholic Cemeteries at no cost to the families, and the individuals do not have to be Catholic for inclusion. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and operates four cemeteries across Long Island, including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, NY, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, NY, Queen of All

Honoring the Lindenhurst High School Class of 2021
The mix of rain and sun was the perfect weather to match the emotion of the day, as the Class of 2021 officially became the newest Lindenhurst High School alumni on June 22. Through tears and smiles, the procession of students, led by the district’s administration, faculty and members of the board of education, made their way into the Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook University to the sound of “Pomp and Circumstance.” The Marine Corps JROTC stood at attention while class vice president Anthony Chiarelli led the salute to the flag. The senior members of the high school chorus sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” accompanied by the senior American Sign Language students who signed the lyrics. Superintendent of Schools Dan Giordano welcomed proud family, friends and distinguished guests to the 102nd commencement ceremony
and the first to be held at Stony Brook University. Assistant Principal Daniel Noviello introduced class valedictorian Aliya John and class salutatorian Isabella Pedone, who presented beautiful commencement speeches to their peers. In her address, Isabella spoke of the “courage to continue” as encouraged by Winston Churchill. She reminded her peers that “our senior year was filled with uncertainty. We all had to adapt and find new ways to learn in very little time and it was the ‘courage to continue’ that has landed us where we are now.” Aliya offered her peers the following advice: “Tomorrow is not guaranteed, and destiny is not preordained. Do not merely recognize a challenge. Funnel as much positive energy into that challenge to get to the outcome that you know will make you happy.” Similarly, Principal Dr. Candice Brodie
addressed the Class of 2021, emphasizing their positivity, and recognized the members of the senior class who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages, earning them the New York State Seal of Biliteracy. Board of Education Vice President Ed Langone and trustee Josephine Martino presented Pride of Lindenhurst Awards to graduates Patrick Lopez, Amy Hilsenbeck and the Class of 2020. Patrick Matthews then addressed his peers in what would be his last task at class president. Board of Education members then proudly presented diplomas to an eager class of students, after which the Class of 2021 performed the symbol of graduation and moved their tassels over to the left side of their caps in a final act of unity led by Superintendent Giordano.

The Lindenhurst Union Free School District welcomes Mrs. Meghan Shore to her new role as principal of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School effective July 1. Mrs. Shore comes to the district by way of Ulysses Byas Elementary School in Roosevelt where she held the position of assistant principal. Prior to that she was an assistant principal at P.S. 199x The Shakespeare School in Bronx. Her previous experience included the position of ELA Instructional Lead in the Bronx Borough Office as well as elementary school teacher in both the general and special education setting. “I have been teaching and leading for the past 18 years, working with elementary school and middle school students from diverse backgrounds and developmental stages.
I am incredibly excited to bring that experience and knowledge to Lindenhurst and to work with the dedicated faculty and staff of Alleghany Avenue as we continue to move forward and provide our students with high quality instruction and a ‘Lindy strong’ sense of community. Together we can accomplish great things.” A lover of learning, Mrs. Shore has earned a Master of Science degree in school building leadership from Mercy College, in Dobbs Ferry, New York and received New York State Certifications in Childhood Education Grades 1-6 and School Building Leadership. When she is not serving the children of Alleghany Elementary School, Mrs. Shore enjoys spending time with her husband and three daughters, visiting
family in Florida and relaxing at the beach. The district extends its congratulations and is confident that Mrs. Shore will excel in this leadership position as she has in others.

Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonprofit organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others.
This Fall, BUE will be offering an array of exciting classes, including Web Design, Music Impact, Innerforce-Martial Arts, iMovie, Cultures, Disney, Cooking, Baking, Animals & Nature, Acting, Sound and Song, Spanish, My Own Business, Yoga, Modern Sports, Your Money, History of Volunteer, Dungeons and Dragons, Animal Care, and Writing Fan Fiction, amongst others!
Fundraiser Brings In $5,000 For A.R.M.S. Club
The Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre Fundraiser on June 19th at the Lindenhurst Moose Lodge was an overwhelming success! A $5,000 check was presented to the A.R.M.S. (Academic Recycled Materials & Supplies) Club from the Lodge, who hosted the event to fund the continued effort of the club to provide school supplies to children in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District who are in need. This was made possible by the tremendous effort put forth by the event’s volunteers as well as the generous support of the sponsors, Connoisseur Media LI, Turtle Graphx (who organized the event on the Lodge’s behalf) and all those who attended! Moose volunteers led by Bridgette Ferrandino worked in the kitchen to prepare a delicious 3 course meal! The food was eagerly served by the students of the A.R.M.S. Club led by Teachers, Danielle Bottachiari and Christine Sanfratello. The actors and staff of South Shore Theatre Experience put on an amazing performance and filled the Hall with laughter, keeping
everyone engaged while they enjoyed their meals. Community Relations Officer of Turtle Graphx, Heather Rosengarten created a presentation that had everyone feeling like they were part of the show and everyone chipped in together between performances to ensure the Hall was ready for the second show in a matter of minutes. To the team at Turtle Graphx, supporting the community without any need for validation or reward is an artistic and meaningful endeavor. They work hard with the purpose of finding ways to help support those in need and the donation of their time (and the beautiful signs of course) for the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre Fundraiser was a small price to pay for the creation of what was a beautiful piece of artwork. ABOUT US The A.R.M.S. Club (Academic Recycled Materials and Supplies) only began in 2018, but the A.R.M.S. program began in 2004. Mrs. Sanfratello and Mrs. Bottachiari noticed that many students threw
away new or like-new school supplies on the last day of school. This was devastating to watch as we had students of our own who were in need. We challenged ourselves to work with the custodians in July to clean out 2,500 lockers and keep school supplies that could be recycled and given out in August. That summer we donated 1 0 back packs to the community. In the summer of 2020, the A.R.M.S. program having been approved by the district as the A.R.M.S. Club now, donated 80 stuffed backpacks. We were able to give to every family who requested. As the program has grown, about 80% of our donations are new items, including brand-name backpacks that students feel proud to carry to school. The A.R.M.S. Club has 20 established club members who eagerly fundraise to purchase supplies. Lastly, the club collaborates with principals, school nurses, and social workers at the elementary and middle schools to ensure students receive supplies throughout the school year should the need arise. ~Danielle Bottachiari & Christine Sanfratello

VILLAGE OF LINDENHURST NOTICE OF ADOPTION NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Lindenhurst Village Board by resolution dated July 13, 2021 adopted the following Local Law amending the Code of the Village of Lindenhurst as follows: Local Law #6-2021 to Extend Local Law #2-2020 – Moratorium on 24-Hour Business Uses Section 1. Purpose. The purpose of this Local Law is to extend the expiration date of Local Law 2 of 2020 from August 11, 2021 to August 11, 2022. The purpose of Local Law 2 of 2020 and this Local Law is to promote and protect the public health, safety and welfare of the Village of Lindenhurst by enacting a local law which establishes a moratorium on certain uses in the Business District between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. The Village Board of Trustees had enacted the moratorium so that it might have sufficient opportunity to evaluate the permitted uses in the Business District and their hours of operation and determine whether the hours of operation of permitted uses in the Business District should be statutorily amended, altered, modified, expanded or repealed as part and parcel of a plan to continue to revitalize the area without negatively impacting its residential neighbors. That moratorium is set to expire on August 11, 2021 and must be extended to allow the aforestated review to continue. An extension to the moratorium would also permit the Board of Trustees to consider whether buffer zones or distance restrictions are appropriate. This extended moratorium will provide an

The need to attract retail business of such a character as to encourage, foster and promote the revitalization of the Business District while at the same time mitigating any detrimental impact on surrounding residential properties. 3. To ensure physical compatibility with surrounding uses. 6. The need to reduce noise, litter, traffic and lighting which detrimentally impacts residential areas adjoining Business District property. 7. To encourage historic preservation. Section 2. Prohibitions. Any permitted Business District use which is open for customers, or clientele between the hours of 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., excluding bars, taverns or restaurants within the Business District shall not be a permitted use. Section 3. Exemptions. This local law shall not apply to bars, taverns or restaurants which are otherwise regulated

No use which is prohibited herein and not otherwise exempt from the application of this local law may be maintained, notwithstanding §193-90 of the Code of the Village of Lindenhurst. b. The Board of Trustees of the Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst shall have the power to vary or modify the application of the provisions hereof after public hearing by resolution of the Village Board, in its absolute and sole discretion, provided that such variance, or modification is consistent with the Village zoning plan, and with the health, safety, morals and general welfare of the Village.
Section 5. Effective Date. This Local Law shall take effect on filing with the Secretary of State and expire on August 11, 2022.
