On a beautiful, July night, the Village of Lindenhurst, along with the Lindenhurst Memorial Library, Lindenhurst Business Improvement District, and Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce, sponsored its first driveup movie night. Village residents and their families gathered in the LIRR commuter parking lot, many taking advantage of

the take-out food from our local eateries, and enjoyed the movie, the outdoors, and the community fellowship. Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, who organized the event, said, “The driveup movie is a great idea to offer our Lindenhurst families a social night out while maintaining social distancing.” Mayor Michael Lavorata

said, “I was pleased to be involved in a night of family-friendly fun with so many of our Lindenhurst residents. Parents are now faced with finding more ways to keep their kids busy this summer, due to the Coronavirus mandates of social distancing. We hope to offer more activities like this one in the future.”

Gershow Recycling Grants Scholarships To Graduating High School Seniors for the recipients that could be viewed online. This year’s recipients were Audrey Barry (Bellport High School), Nolan Kata (Bay Shore High School), Aden Hunter (Lindenhurst High School), Byanca CaetanoSoares (PatchogueMedford High School), Brandon Thomas (Valley Stream Central High School), Jaden McAleese (Freeport High School), Subhana Zafar (Walt Whitman High School), Mary Tsahas (Herricks High School), Leyal Hamdan (Longwood High School), Kylie Plitt (Riverhead High School), and Clenio Correia (Frederick Douglass Academy VII High School). For the second year in a row, Gershow partnered

with the Medford Chamber of Commerce to present the Gershow Recycling/ Medford Chamber of Commerce Scholarship. This year’s recipient was Adrian Rutkowski of Patchogue-Medford High School. This one-time award in the amount of $1,000 is presented to a Patchogue-Medford High School student who intends to continue studying environmental science, recycling or business. Despite the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on local businesses, Gershow Recycling continued to provide financial assistance to graduating high school seniors from Long Island and the New York metropolitan area with its Environmental Conservation Scholarship. Now in its 12th year, this one-time, $1,000 scholarship is given to a student who intends to continue their studies in either engineering or environmental science after graduation. Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. Madlyn Cullen born in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn NY was one of two children; her only brother died when he was 66 years old. She attended St. Mary’s Nursing school in Queens graduating in 1940 as WWll began. She stated, “It was rough – the doctors were busy with the war—we went right to work, just like today with the new doctors and nurses

of 2020.” She and John Thomas had 9 children “I took 16 years off to raise my children. She went back to work at age 63 at St. John’s Hospital in Queens. Both St. John’s and St. Mary’s are now closed Madlyn retired in 1989. “I loved every minute of nursing, there was not a day as a nurse that we didn’t have a good laugh, even in bad

times. Madlyn often read in the newspaper about converting Queen of the Rosary Academy an allgirl school to a senior residence, which is now Dominican Village. “I never imagined I would have been fortunate enough to live here. God smiled the day I moved in here, 10 years ago.”

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to

hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow

social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including

3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. Grilling Safety Video from the NFPA
