SUFFOLK COUNTY LEGISLATOR KEVIN J. MCCAFFREY

LEGISLATOR MCCAFFREY SPONSORS COURT RENAMING - Suffolk County Legislator had two of his resolutions sent to the County Executive’s desk following the Tuesday, June 22nd, General meeting of the Suffolk County Legislatureincluding his motion to rename the Supreme Court Building at the John P. Cohalan, Jr. Court Complex in Honor of Justice Marquette L. Floyd. Justice Floyd was the first African American District Court Judge in Suffolk County; and served on the District Court bench with distinction for 19 years as its senior judge. In 1989, Justice Floyd became the first African American Justice of the New York State Supreme Court in Suffolk County. He faced great adversity in growing up in the rural segregated south, coming of age during the Great Depression, and serving our nation in what was a segregated military. Yet Justice Floyd persisted, qualifying for Officer Candidate School in the United States Air Force and earning degrees from NYU and Brooklyn Law School. Unfortunately, Justice Floyd passed away on December 12, 2020 at the age of 93. But the renaming of the Supreme Court Building at the John P. Cohalan, Jr. Court Complex in Central Islip will serve as a fitting tribute to Justice Floyd by honoring his legacy as a true pioneer of justice, equality and as a source of inspiration to younger generations.

LINDENHURST KNIGHTS HOST BEACH FUNDRAISER - On Saturday, June 19th, the Lindenhurst Knights of Columbus Council #794 held their first ever Knights at Gilgo fundraiser at the Gilgo Beach Inn! Doubling as a recruiting event, the beach day was fun for the whole family - complete with food, raffles, and a cornhole competition! The event was made possible by the work of Council Chancellor Patrick Corcoran and Gilgo Beach Inn co-owner Paul McDuffie.

BABYLON VILLAGE HOSTS SECOND PRIDE PARADE - The second annual Babylon Pride Parade took place along Deer Park Avenue on Sunday, June 6th! Braving the heat were nearly one thousand spectators and parade participants, including Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Babylon Village Mayor Mary Adams, Deputy Mayor Frank Seibert, Trustee Robyn Silvestri, and New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso. The officials rode along the parade route in a float adorned with “Babylon Pride” with parade organizer Bob McKeown. Following the parade, several nearby streets were closed such that Pride festivities could continue within local businesses. In addition to the Village of Babylon and parade organizers, the Babylon Village Chamber of Commerce played an integral role in making the event a success. Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) is pleased to announce their 2021 summer theater season. BACCA’s resident theatre company, Modern Classics Theatre Company of Long Island (www.modernclassicstheatrecompanyoflongisland.net), will present DOUBT, A Parable by John Patrick Shanley for six performances at the BACCA Arts Center located at 149 N. Wellwood Ave. in Lindehurst, NY. The production is directed by Danny Higgins. Performances will take place on July 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, Sundays at 2PM. Tickets are available online through the Modern Classics website or the BACCA website. EastLine Theatre (eastlinetheatre.org) will be presenting free outdoor performances of Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare. This adaption by Danny Higgins and Nicole Savin features original music by John Brautigam. With BACCA’s support, three performances will take place in the Town of Babylon: July 17 at 1PM in Delano Stewart Plaza, Wyandanch; July 18 at 5PM on Amityville Beach, Amiltyville; July 31 at 6PM in Irmisch Historical Park, Lindenhurst. KristyDavid-Ramphal, MD graduated the Zucker School of Medicine on May 10, 2021 and is now doing her medical residency program at the distinguished Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Rhode Island Hospital. Kristy is an alumni of the University of Pennsylvania and a graduate of Lindenhurst High School, Class of 2011. Attended West Gates Avenue Elementary where she fondly remembers her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Hennig and 4th grade teacher, Mr. Maffei. High school sweethearts, Kristy and Mike Corcoran (son of coach Michele Corcoran) tied the knot on April 17, 2021 at a small covid-free ceremony in Lindenhurst with family and friends and which was officiated by high school teacher, Mr. Tim Henderson.

The classes that this nonproﬁt offer either take place at their new location, which is 150 Motor Parkway, Suite 11, Hauppauge, NY 11788 or online! Some classes they offer are: Yoga, Martial Arts, Acting and Improv, Music Appreciation, Art, Digital Design and Technology, World Cultures, History of Walt Disney, Languages and Humanities, Personal Development, Finances and Math for everyday use, Communications, Animals & Nature and Cooking for all abilities and all levels. “We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonproﬁt Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Also, if you would like to volunteer your time to help fulfill their mission, you can! Lastly, donations are always appreciated. LEGISLATORS MCCAFFREY AND DONNELLY HONOR RETIRING SCPD CHIEF OF DETECTIVES - On Thursday, June 17th, The Suffolk County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee was joined by Suffolk County Police Department Chief of Detectives Gerard Gigante in recognition of his upcoming retirement. Chief Gigante, of Lindenhurst, will be retiring later this summer- bringing to a close an esteemed 35 year career in protecting and serving the people of Suffolk County. During his tenure, he served as the Commanding Officer of several posts, including the Third Precinct Crime Section, Seventh Squad, Highway Patrol Bureau, Patrol Special Operations Bureau, and our own First Precinct. At headquarters, Gigante held the positions of Deputy Chief of Patrol and Chief of Detectives, through which he was at the forefront of the Department’s anti-gang efforts, Firearms Suppression Teams, and the establishment of the Human Trafficking Investigations Unit.

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Adventureland opened in 1962 and has been serving Long Island for over 59 years. The park offers both season and day passes that can be purchased online or at the park. This year’s hot NEW ride is the Sports Tower with over 30 additional rides at the park. It is easily located on Route 110 in Farmingdale. In attendance were the Adventureland family, the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, Legislature Jason Richberg, Senator John Brooks, Assemblyman Steve Stern, Councilman Anthony Manetta, and Dana Durso of Andrew Garbarino’s office.

A TRIBUTE TO A TRUE COMMUNITY SERVANT - On Saturday, June 5th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer joined the Madden family for the rededication of West Belle Terre Avenue in Copiague as “Chris Madden Memorial Way.” Chris Madden was a true friend and community leader throughout the Lindenhurst and Copiague communities up until his tragic passing earlier last year after contracting COVID-19. He served in a number of community service oriented groups, including the Copiague School Board, American Venice Civic Association, Kiwanis Club of Copiague, and Copiague Chamber of Commerce- all of which continue to feel his loss. It is in Chris’ memory, though, that they continue to move forward, for the betterment of their communities and the lives of their neighbors.
