FIRST PLACE - The GU12 Lindenhurst Strikers team clinched 1st place in the Champion Division of the LIJ league. They only had six goals scored against them the entire spring division, and they scored 20 goals. Most of these girls have been playing together since they were 5-6 year olds and have grown into a highly competitive team that constantly support and encourage each other. They always give 110% and and the coaches and all the parents would like to congratulate all the girls on the Strikers for their hard work! Way to go STRIKERS!

Suffolk County Community College’s athletics program has been named a the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) 2017-2018 NATYCAA Cup Award recipient, finishing third, for overall athletics program excellence. The college’s program was also recognized as the sixth best in the nation out of 650 two-year colleges. The NATYCAA Cup Award was established in 2003 and recognizes, nationally, overall outstanding two-year athletics programs. Since 2012, Suffolk County Community College has had two sixth place finishes, two third place finishes, one second place finishes and one first place finish.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Lastly, they help restore by partnering with the Town of Brookhaven to run a restoration Throughout the month of July, I will program where they grow oysters present various ways that you can and seed local harbors. They help those at Coastal Steward Long strive to establish a self-sustaining Island to preserve, educate and population of oysters in Long take action! Island’s harbors.

CSLI helps educate others through their marine education program, which brings students to visit the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Students will gain hands on experiences so they can understand the local marine ecology. They help preserve by leading cleanups in local communities to prevent marine debris from contaminating our beaches and injuring local wildlife through preservation efforts. Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain

On Saturday, July 14th, CSLI will be having a Shellfish Restoration Project at Cedar Beach in Mt. Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) is proud to announce that artists participating in their Fine Art and Art Therapy Programs have their works exhibited at The LENZ Winery on 38355 New York State Route 25, Peconic, NY. The exhibit, DISRUPTION, runs through September 4th, 2018, at the winery, which is open 7 days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The LENZ Winery, one of Long Island’s oldest and most prestigious North Fork vineyards, has long been a supporter of FREE. They have hosted several showcases for artwork created by members of FREE’s art program. FREE, a leader in the field of human services, dedicated to helping individuals of all abilities realize their full potential, believes that Art Therapy provides a powerful means for healing and

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

“I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our office. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

On July 1, 1776 the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. On July 2, 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of Richard Henry Lee’s motion for independence. The delegates spent the next two days debating and revising the language of a statement drafted by Thomas Jefferson. On July 4, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, and as a result this date is celebrated as Independence Day. Only 2 people actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776: John Hancock and Charles Thomson, Secretary of Congress. Most others signed on August 2, and several signed on a later date.

The collection on display, DISRUPTION, is a very special exhibition of artwork created by individuals with Autism and other Special Needs, participating in Fine Art and Art Therapy programs at FREE. More than simply interfering with a pattern that was already in existence, DISRUPTION challenged our artists to create a pattern, then disrupt it and transform the old pattern into a brand new one. It looks different, feels different and is different. To be able to embrace this new pattern, old thinking and memories had to shift. What was old had to be let go of as our artists immersed themselves into the flowing river of creativity; where healing resides and has the power to rejuvenate and transform life. Throughout the seven months it took to complete the process, weekly emotional and spiritual self-revelation spiraled our artists to ever mounting artistic heights allowing them to find their voices and “talk to us” through the mystical, hidden language of images and symbols. DISRUPTION consists of wide ranging depictions of differing natural frequencies of life. Whether it is an internal neurological pathway or a winding path through the forest, the patterns on the paper display the artist’s personal reflection of their own connection to our worlds and the pathway to creativity. While the artwork is beautiful to look at it is important to recognize the depth of emotional release, intellectual learning and work skills development that took place over months of work with all our dedicated staff. It was their patience and unerring commitment to “stay the course” and

believe that our artists could reach high to not only “see their healing image”, but also commit it to permanent form for all to share in their vision. Much has been written about the healing power of Mindfulness Based Art Therapy and the creative process of spiritual selfexpression, especially for individuals who may find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings through spoken words alone. The images on view are a testament to this healing power, as our artists faced the challenge to “break through” familiar modes of expression and embrace feelings of trust, hope and peace, offering them an alternative to chaos, conflict and fear. This project in creativity has helped

“One small gesture can change a person’s life for better or worse.” In his address, Superintendent Daniel Giordano chose to read “Be Brave Little One,” a children’s book written by Marianne Richmond. This was done to complete the students’ academic experience in Lindenhurst, in a similar fashion to the way in which it began – an educator using a class book to ease the transition. Referencing the book, he explained to the graduates that it is now their time to be brave and explore. “Step outside of your comfort zone,” he urged. “Try new things. Do what feels right in your heart. Do it with bravery and do it with kindness.” Before the members of the board of education presented the Class of 2018 with their diplomas, the Class of 2018 presented the board with a donation to the First Responders Children’s Foundation, who will use the funds to establish the Lindenhurst Class of 2018 Scholarship, to be received by any student who meets the organization’s criteria. Student Council recording and corresponding secretaries Fiona Buckley and Antonia Rice led their classmates in the turning of the tassels and gave the signal to throw their caps to symbolize their commencement as Lindenhurst High School alumni. Seeking Help Military members stationed in the Middle East are subjected to some brutal conditions, but every once in a while something happens that puts a smile on their face and brings them some comfort. That’s exactly what happened to two airmen, who within days of each other were brought together with puppies in need of rescue. They rescued the dogs and went on to create strong bonds with them. Now, the Guardians of Rescue are working to help the airmen bring the dogs back home to America with them for good. “They have created inseparable bonds with these dogs and can’t imagine leaving them behind in the Middle East as they come back home to the states,” Robert Misseri, founder and president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We have helped other airmen bring dogs back home with them, and we are going to help these two as well. The survivor of that litter became his best friend, a beautiful puppy he named Syri. Both puppies were lucky enough to be saved by these two heroic airmen. Over the months that followed, they created strong bonds with them. This action is to clear title pursuant to RPAPL §1515 to the Boat Berth which Plaintiff has exclusively used for more than 37 years. 3. In addition, this action seeks to claim a right of adverse possession to the Boat Berth property, pursuant to RPAPL Article 15. 91 East Riviera Drive and the Boat Berth 4. On July 23rd, 1978, 91 East Riviera Drive was purchased by Plaintiff and Bruce Kay (“Decedent Partner”) from Miguel and Delores Broullon. Exhibit “A” is the chain of title search of MKM Abstract Company dated November 1st, 2017. 5. The Plaintiff’s Deed states that the Plaintiff and the Decedent Partner were the fee title owners of 91 East Riviera Drive, known and designated as Lots 1 to 4 inclusive and 11 and 12 in Block 23 on a certain map entitled, “Map of American Venice, Amended, Section 1”, filed in

Between July 23rd, 1978 and April 10th, 1980, Plaintiff and his Decedent Partner (or his Administrator) were the exclusive owners in fee and in actual exclusive possession of 91 East Riviera Drive and in exclusive possession of the Boat Berth. 9. Since April 10th, 1980, the Plaintiff has been the exclusive owner in fee and in actual exclusive possession of 91 East Riviera Drive and in exclusive possession of the Boat Berth. Adverse Possession 10. Since July 23rd, 1978, Plaintiff in title has been in actual possession of the Boat Berth under a claim of title, has held the same exclusive of any other right under written instrument and has been in hostile, open and notorious and actual possession of the Premises continuously for more than ten (10) years prior to the commencement of this action, and such possession continues to the present time. 11. Since July 23rd, 1978, Plaintiff has been under the impression that the Boat Berth was part and parcel of those lands and that fee title was conveyed to Plaintiff.

LEGALS 12. Since July 23rd, 1978, Plaintiff has cultivated, or improved the Boat Berth premises and has protected the Boat Berth premises with an enclosure. 13. Since July 23rd, 1978, Plaintiff has maintained the Boat Berth in the following ways: a. Plaintiff paid the real estate taxes on the Boat Berth since 1978. The tax bill is in the Plaintiff’s name and sent to the Plaintiff’s house. Exhibit “C” is the tax bill for 91 91 East Riviera Drive and the Boat Berth; b. Plaintiff paid the mortgage and utilities associated with the Boat Berth; c. Plaintiff enclosed the Boat Berth with a fence; d. Plaintiff stored materials and boats on the Boat Berth; e. Plaintiff watered, mowed and maintained the lawn and planted grass and bushes on the Boat Berth; f. Plaintiff docked boats and tied them to the Boat Berth; g. Plaintiff openly used and enjoyed the Boat Berth. Title to the Boat Berth 14. This action was precipitated by the Plaintiff’s contemplated sale of 91 East Riviera Drive, including the Boat Berth. 15. In preparation for sale, Plaintiff’s attorney, Gerard Glass, Esq., reviewed and ordered a title search. 16. The title search revealed that the above title to the Boat Berth in fee was owned by deed from Defendants, Vito Palazzolo and Elayne Palazzolo (the “Palazzolos”), who previously owned 91 East Riviera Drive, Lindenhurst, which Deed was last recorded on March 8, 1966 in Liber 5921 Cp. 561. Exhibit “A” contains the Deed. Exhibit “D” is the title company’s last owner search. Other Interested Parties 17. The Palazzolos are interested parties who may claim to have some estate or interest in the disputed Boat Berth area described above, which belongs to Plaintiff. 18. It is obvious the Palazzolos intended to convey title to 91 East Riviera Drive, Lindenhurst and the Boat Berth. But did not by mistake. 19. However, the Palazzolos have not made such claim, nor have they ever had any contact with the Plaintiff. 20. Indeed, the Palazzolos cannot be located and are believed to be deceased. 21. Based on the public records from the chain of title search, the Palazzolos are the only parties that might have a claim on the estate, or interest in the real property which is the subject of this litigation, and that is extremely unlikely. 22. No personal claim is made against any third party herein upon any cause of action brought under Article 15 of the RPAPL, except such parties as may assert a claim adverse to the claim of the Plaintiff as set forth herein.

LEGALS 23. Upon information and belief, none of the parties interested in this action are infants, mentally retarded, mentally ill, or alcohol abusers. 24. That no persons other than the Plaintiff have been in actual possession of the real property during the past 10 years claiming title as owners in fee. 25. That the Court should order service by publication since the Palazzolos cannot be located and are most likely deceased. 26. Plaintiff has no adequate remedy at law. 27. No previous application has been made to this or any other Court for this or any other similar relief. WHEREFORE, the Plaintiff prays for an order declaring that the fee title of the Plaintiff to the above described real property known as the “Boat Berth” has been judicially established free and clear of any liens, other than those which the Plaintiff may have caused, and granting such other and further relief as to the Court may seem just and proper; and WHEREFORE, the Plaintiff prays that the Palazzolos and all persons that may claim under them, be forever barred from all claim to an estate or interest in the Boat Berth property described herein.
