New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Additionally, they will be holding their 2nd Annual Heroes for the Homeless 5K Walk/Run on Sunday, November 3rd at Eisenhower Park. This is a great opportunity for anyone to come out and walk and or run to support New Ground! Last year’s event was a huge success and they are looking forward to an even bigger and better turnout this year!

Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! New Ground hosts various special events throughout the year. In September (exact

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Rebuilding Together Long Island www.RebuildingTogetherLongIsland.org Rebuilding Together Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization that provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our Veterans, people with disabilities and families with children who meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to Repair Homes, Revitalize Communities and Rebuild Lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence. Their services may include plumbing and electrical repairs, weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, restoring heat and hot water, back and front yard clean-up, constructing wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and so much more. Teacher Procures A Grant

Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District has been selected to receive a grant from the Tanger Outlet Center in Deer Park that will benefit the school’s vocabulary development program. The grant submission was made by Maureen Benson, the school’s speech language pathologist. Benson and her students read the book “Donovan’s Word Jar” by Monalisa

DeGross about a little boy who collected words and then gave his words away so that others could experience the same joy of adding to their vocabulary. The fifth grade students thought about sharing the words they collected, with the school. “Outside my classroom there is a jar painted on the wall with the words my students have added,” said Benson. “With this grant, I will purchase a display case so that everyone in the school will

be able to add their own words to the display and hopefully it will become a schoolwide center that the students and teachers will look forward to each week as the words change.” A check in the amount of $680 was presented to Ms. Benson and Principal Linda Domanico by Tanger representatives office administrator, Amanda Fuentes, and general manager, Nancy Larson.

Addressing The Challenges Of Long-Distance Caregiving Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time. How do they manage? It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer. Long-distance caregivers provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and out-of-pocket expenses. The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month arranging care services and half said they spend another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the

care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medications-for an average of 22 hours per month. Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed, they often have to make significant adjustments to their work schedules to allow for their caregiving responsibilities. Twenty-five percent of the surveyed long-distance caregivers had shortened their workday while they were caregiving and 36 percent reported missing full days of work. Twelve percent had taken a leave of absence. The forces that have created today’s longdistance caregiver realities, including an aging population, families separated by distance, more women entering the workforce, and global competitiveness among companies, are unlikely to reverse themselves in the near future. Rather, the challenges and workbalance issues are likely to accelerate. Clearly, longdistance caregiving already

impacts retention and productivity. What can an employer do? Certainly, sensitizing line managers to the issue is a reasonable starting point. Adjusting policies to allow job sharing and short-time relief, as well as providing information and help in coordinating eldercare, are definitely worthwhile investments, compared to the cost of attrition and lost productivity. And, since long-distance caregivers have financial burdens as well as time conflicts, programs that offer help with these are beneficial. For example, voluntary pooling of frequent flyer miles for employees who need to travel on family emergencies is an idea worth considering.
