When the novel coronavirus COVID-19 struck the world at the end of 2019, few people anticipated just how much the virus would upend daily life in the months to come. Because there currently is no cure or standardized treatment for the disease, the best course of action has involved maintaining social distance to help cut down on the rate of spread. Social distancing has changed the way the public shops, interacts socially with friends and family members and attends school. For the thousands of students comprising the class of 2020, social distancing also changes how they will graduate. Graduation decisions are something high schools and colleges have grappled with in the face of social distancing. Graduation has become a modify-asyou-go model in many towns and cities. In some instances, all in-person ceremonies have been restricted and virtualonly graduations will take place. For example, New Jersey’s Department of Education was only allowing virtual graduation events as graduation season approached. Other parts of the

country have been approaching graduation plans in various ways. The Tucson Unified School District postponed its graduation ceremonies to late June rather than canceling them altogether. Schools in Spotsylvania and Fauquier Counties in Virginia held modified versions of in-person ceremonies in May, which limited the number of family members in attendance and required relatives to hand out diplomas as a safety precaution. Students in Cherry Creek School District in Colorado found out they will have a modified inperson, students-only graduation ceremony in July. Relatives can watch the ceremony on a live stream. The Army will proceed with this year’s graduation ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June, with President Donald Trump giving the commencement speech for cadets. The 1,000 cadets will return to campus to attend the ceremony, which will include procession changes and other social distancing modifications in line with current health requirements. Whether a school hosts a graduation ceremony in-person

or not, families can organize their own at-home graduations. All relatives who are graduating (whether from high school, college or even those moving up from fifth grade to middle school and eighth grade to high school) can participate. Here are a few tips: • Pool resources to borrow the right number of caps or gowns from friends or family. • Play “Pomp and Circumstance” over a bluetooth speaker. • Have the graduates march around the perimeter of a yard or down a neighborhood street. • Ask a relative to give a keynote speech. • Take graduation photos outside of the school doors or on campus where allowed. • Cater a graduation luncheon or dinner from a favorite neighborhood eatery. • Employ all necessary safety precautions, such as seating guests six feet apart from one another and wearing masks. Graduation ceremonies have changed due to COVID-19, but graduates can still commemorate this milestone moment in their lives.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need. Additionally, Eileen is looking for a donation of a mini-bus (can be used). This bus would be used for her non-profit traveling salon and her outreach work for the homeless. If you or someone you know can make this kind of donation, please reach out to Eileen directly. Graduation ceremonies are a tradition that dates back to the first high schools and universities. While many aspects of graduation ceremonies have evolved over the years, the graduation cap has remained a hallmark of such ceremonies. Graduation caps are one of the most visible aspects of graduation dress. Many scholars believe the mortarboard style cap graduates don was developed from the biretta, a similar-looking Italian hat worn by Roman Catholic clergy. In the 12th and 13th centuries, students and teachers typically wore

clerical clothing because the church was highly inﬂuential at this time. Medieval universities helped inspire academic dress, including the familiar graduation cap. Mortarboards are shaped like a square, perhaps to give them a scholarly appearance like a book or to represent the shape of a quad on the campus of England’s Oxford University, where many graduation dress customs are believed to have originated. Others theorize that the mortarboard, which is named after the ﬂat board used by bricklayers and masons,

represents the skill of a master workman. Many graduation caps were initially black or gray. According to the graduation information site Graduation Source, when color photography became the norm in the 20th century, schools began to use gowns and caps in different shades because they would show up in photographs. Schools often coordinate caps and gowns so their colors reﬂect their official school colors. While certain degrees warrant different styles of gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard caps are relatively standard. In addition to the cap, there is a single button at the top. Tassels hang from these buttons. At commencement, tassels are traditionally worn on the right side of the cap and then moved to the left once graduates receive their diplomas. Graduation caps are part of the larger scope of academic dress that comprises school traditions. Millions of graduates across the globe will don their caps and toss them into the air later in celebration of their hard work.

A Message From Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata I do not generally write about issues that happen in other communities. However, since George Floyd’s tragic death in Minneapolis has impacted all communities, throughout our nation, as your Mayor, I would like to share some of my thoughts. First and foremost, my goal is to maintain the safety and security of everyone. I will continue to work with the Suffolk County Police Department, as well as our County and Town officials to achieve that goal. I do understand that many want to send a message for change. I hope the message is sent without violence. We are “Lindy Strong”! We can come

together peacefully, and build up our community, not tear it down. There are ways to honor the memory of George Floyd and create a more peaceful world without people breaking into buildings, setting police cars on fire, vandalizing stores, and jeopardizing the safety of community residents. It does no good to leave innocent store-owners and their employees without their livelihood, especially in light of the financial hardships brought on by the pandemic. Many store-owners have worked their lifetime to build their businesses, and have lost everything due to the

events of the past weeks. I hope that together, as the Lindenhurst community, we can emerge from the pandemic and the tragedy of George Floyd’s death with increased compassion, understanding, respect, and dignity for one another, and a renewed commitment for decency and equality for all people. I pray our world can be peacefully united, and our community can get back to some type of normalcy very soon. I am proud to be your Mayor, and proud of all our residents; in light of all the hardships, stress, and suffering, our “Lindy Spirit” remains strong.

Outdoor Dining A Boost For Local Eateries

The Village of Lindenhurst is moving to create more space for outdoor dining – including possible closures of some municipal parking lots – to allow patrons of local eateries to safely enjoy “eating out” as businesses continue to slowly reopen. Mayor Michael Lavorata and Trustee RJ Renna have been working with

Lindenhurst eateries to temporarily allow restaurants to expand dining out onto public sidewalks, and into public spaces, through a streamlined administrative approval process. The Town of Babylon IDA recently held a press conference to announce their “Babylon Is Back” program for re-opening

Babylon businesses, and to endorse initiatives like this one in Lindenhurst. Trustee Renna said, “I am excited to open up our sidewalks and parking lots, so we can enjoy summer with great food, great friends, and support the local businesses that make our Lindenhurst Village so special.”

Five Western Suffolk County Towns Announce Pools And Spray Parks Closed For 2020 Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer has announced that the township is joining its four western-Suffolk County counterparts – Brookhaven, Islip, Huntington and Smithtown – in deciding to keep community pools and spray parks closed this summer as COVID-19 continues to spread on Long Island. “After much consideration, we unfortunately do not believe that we can make our pools and spray parks available this summer in a manner that is safe for both our residents and employees,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “I know that I speak for all Town Board

members and our Parks & Recreation Department when I say that it breaks our heart to make this announcement, knowing how much our residents love these facilities and rely on them to cool off in the hot summer months. It was a difficult decision but one that we feel is in the best interest of protecting public health, which is our utmost priority as we continue to battle COVID-19.” While the Town of Babylon will not be opening its pools and spray parks, its parks and beaches will be open for resident use during the summer. Residents are asked to follow social distancing guidelines

when visiting and comply with COVID-19 specific rules, such as wearing face coverings in common areas. Students often take a break from school as a chance to travel or gain some professional experience. Others use gap years as a chance for personal exploration before moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Gap years may once have been looked at unfavorably, but they have evolved from such perceptions into opportunities to volunteer abroad, learn a new language in a foreign land, visit one’s ancestral homeland, or work as an intern. While many students take gap years prior to entering college, even college graduates can benefit from taking time

off after earning their degrees. Gap years are now seen as a way to improve a curriculum vitae and gain relevant work experience in a particular field. The resource GapYear.com indicates employers actively employ people who have taken a gap year, prefering candidates who have real-world experience. Preparation is necessary before diving head first into a gap year. Students can speak with people who have already taken gap years and ask questions. Graduates should approach the decision of whether or not to take a gap year just as they would any other large, life-changing decision. Experts say that it can take between nine and 12 months to plan a gapyear itinerary. Finances are a consideration, and gap years require ample savings and a carefully constructed budget in order to be transformed from a dream into a reality. Gap years are a growing trend that can help students improve their résumés, see the world and gain invaluable experience.

The American flag is a symbol of the country’s history, pride and success in overcoming political oppression. Through its many incarnations and variations, the Stars and Stripes has waved over government buildings, schools and private residences. According to History. com, in 1775, the Second Continental Army led to the creation of the first “American” flag. However, that flag was too similar to the British Union Jack flag, George Washington requested a revision. In 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the “flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white.” Furthermore, the “union” was represented by 13 stars of white in a blue field, “representing a new constellation.” More than a century later, a small-town Wisconsin teacher named Bernard Cigrand came up with the idea for an annual flag day in 1885.

Even though the Fourth of July, a holiday in which the flag is prominently and proudly displayed, had long been celebrated as the birthday of the United States, Cigrand wanted a holiday that would focus specifically on the flag in all its glory. June 14 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the official adoption of the first flag. Cigrand led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday, and throughout his life continued to advocate for respect of the flag. Various other organizations liked the idea of a day to honor the flag, including the State Board of Education of New York, the Betsy Ross House and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Yet, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that Flag Day was officially established by presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. Still, it would take another 33 years for President Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14 as the

official National Flag Day, which he did on August 3, 1949. Americans can honor the flag by displaying it on Flag Day. Here’s how to display the flag properly, courtesy of Military.com. • The flag should be free of any obstructions, such as power lines or tree limbs. • If displayed with other flags, Old Glory should be at the top-most point or in the center of a horizontal array of flags. • If the flag is displayed on its side, the blue field should be to the left. • The flag should be raised in the morning at a residence or business and taken down at night. The only exception to the flag being out at night is if it’s illuminated. • Flags can be repaired. However, if a flag is tattered, it can be removed and brought to a local VFW hall to be properly disposed of. Flag Day honors the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of the great American nation.

Heat And Health Warm weather beckons people outdoors to enjoy the outdoors. However, when the weather gets too hot, prolonged time outdoors can adversely affect overall health. into a cool location, they may develop heatstroke. Heatstroke arises when oneâ€™s body temperature climbs to 104 degrees, according to Penn Medicine. A body at this temperature may experience damage to the muscles, heart, kidneys, and brain. Flushed skin, altered mental state and rapid breathing may occur when suffering from heatstroke. A notable symptom of heatstroke is that perspiration stops completely. Rehydration, cooling the body and loosening tight clothes can help prevent serious consequences.

The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: â€œThe ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, â€œpatriotic citizenâ€?. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus fireman, policeman and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorable discharged from the military the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veterans discharge papers for proof of service. This being done and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased.

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other

families safe for the coming months.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
