Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition is a grassroots organization based in Lindenhurst, New York. www.lindycares.org. Our mission involves creating a safe and healthy community for our youth. We hold community meetings during which we listen to the residents, students and teachers, and work with officials to create an environment to find solutions and answers to the current problems facing our students and youth. One important issue facing Long Island families and people all over our nation is underage drinking and addiction. That is why we have partnered with Richard Schaffer, Town Supervisor, Tim Sini, Suffolk County District Attorney and Geraldine Hart, Suffolk County Police Commissioner, to bring this important public safety message about Suffolk County’s Social Host Laws designed and enforced to protect everyone. Underage drinking is illegal and never appropriate. Studies show that people who engage in underage drinking are more susceptible to alcoholism and early experimentation with drugs. Our mission is to bring awareness to this issue and to help people find the resources they need to deal with the problem. Unfortunately, in our culture, drinking has evolved into a tradition or rite of passage. Movies and shows depict drinking as a way to celebrate the end of great events or wind down at the end of the day, but it is not a pastime for anyone under the age of 21. You can say no, and if you do, you are not alone. Our surveys show that many parents and students are uncomfortable with the pressure of prom season and hosting celebratory parties that serve alcohol after sporting events.

Join Us In Promoting Safety And Wellness This Prom Season. What is the Social Host Law? The primary purpose of the Social Host Law is to deter underage drinking parties or gatherings where adults knowingly allow minors to drink alcohol or alcoholic beverages. The law applies to any adult (including a parent) who is over the age of 18 and knowingly allows consumption of alcohol by minors (any person under the age of 21).

Who can be charged? Anyone who is over the age of 18 who: • Owns, rents or otherwise controls any permanent or temporary domicile, including a home, apartment, condominium, cooperative unit, trailer home, recreational vehicle, mobile home, overnight accommodation at a hotel, motel, campsite or short-term rental property, or other dwelling unit of any kind, including yards and open areas adjacent thereto; and • Knowingly allows the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises; • Fails to take reasonable corrective action upon learning of the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises. • Notably, this law does not apply to the consumption of alcohol by a minor whose parent or guardian is present and has expressly permitted such consumption; or the use and consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by a minor for religious purposes. What is “Reasonable Corrective Action?” Reasonable corrective actions shall include, but are not be limited to: • Making a prompt demand that the minor(s) stop drinking the alcoholic beverage or leave the premises; and • If the minor refuses to comply with the request, the adult must promptly report the underage drinking to local law enforcement or any other person with greater degree of authority over the minor (e.g., the minor’s parents or guardians)

Why is this law needed? This law provides a legal basis for holding adults responsible for knowingly allowing underage drinking to occur at a place under their control, whether or not they provide the alcohol.

What are the penalties? 1st offense: Fine not to exceed $500 2nd offense and subsequent offense: Misdemeanor – fine up to $1,000 and/or a term of imprisonment not to exceed one year.

Other laws regarding underage persons... The New York State Penal Law, the Alcohol Beverage Control Law, and other state and local regulations make it illegal to engage in unlawful conduct with persons under the age of 21. These laws prohibit the sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 21, the purchase of alcohol for someone who is under the age of 21, and address conduct that endangers the welfare of persons of a protected age. Penalties are severe, and in many cases can result in significant fines and/or imprisonment. Help us keep our young community members safe. Reports of a possible overdose, intoxicated or impaired driver, or other emergency should be called into 911 immediately. Illegal consumption of alcohol by minors should be reported without delay. Information regarding future parties where alcohol or other substances will be unlawfully consumed can be called in to the Suffolk County Police Department’s “Cancel the Keg” hotlines. Officers will make a custom notification to the residence to let the homeowners know that law enforcement is aware of the impending party and explain the social host law and the consequences of violating it. Rewards may be available and, most importantly, you may save a life! The Lindenhurst High School Student Council dramatized the consequences of drinking and driving with “Shattered Dreams,” a program that promotes responsible decision-making by high school students regarding drinking and driving. The event included a mock accident scene in which several students were seriously injured and a beloved teacher was fatally wounded, resulting from one student’s decision to drive while intoxicated after senior cut day. The junior and senior classes looked on as

various community entities, including local fire and police responded to the mock scene behind the high school. They watched as police officers tested and “arrested” their classmate whose decision to drive impacted the lives of so many others. On the second day of the event, the students watched the student council made video outlining the events that led to the accident. The video emphasized the idea that “You only get one life to live. You can’t go back and rewind. Drinking and driving is a choice. Think

before you press play.” As a culmination to the program, Kym Laube, executive director of Human, Understanding and Growth Service located in Westhampton Beach, spoke with students and shared information about how to navigate the stress and pressures they face as adolescents today. She explored with them strategies and alternatives so that they could champion their experiences and turn them into positive choices and behaviors.

native to Long Island. She brought with her Eastern screech owls, a barred owl and a great horned owl. During the interactive presentation Ms. Sagevick explored with students the various features and survival skills of each species.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). In support of local fire departments, Gershow Recycling donated the use of 30 cars for the Twelfth Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament, which was held at the Northport Fire Department’s Training Grounds at Steer’s Pit in Northport on May 11. Gershow also donated the use of its Huntington facility to enable teams to practice in the week leading up to the

tournament. Twenty-two teams from twelve fire departments participated in the tournament, which involved groups of five firefighters working to extricate a “victim” from a “crash” using the Jaws of Life. Each team was judged on the amount of time it took to perform the extrication, the handling of equipment and the safety procedures they followed. After the tournament, the

vehicles were brought back to Gershow’s facility, where they were shredded and recycled. Gershow has nine locations in Brooklyn, New Hyde Park, Valley Stream, Freeport, Lindenhurst, Huntington Station, Bay Shore, Medford and Riverhead. The Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst proudly announces that it will once again be sponsoring the Summer of Fun Recreation Program at Lindenhurst Village Park. Please be reminded, the program is open to Lindenhurst children who are eligible to attend Lindenhurst Public Schools. This is not a Town of Babylon program. The registration fee for each village resident child is $150 for the season. This fee does not include trips (costs vary) and shirts. Lunch supervision ($90 cash) is due at registration. The registration fee for Lindenhurst residents who do not reside in the village is $250 for the season. Again, trips (costs vary) and shirts are not included in this fee. Lunch supervision ($90 cash) is due at registration. Registration will be held at Kienle Little League Field at the Village Park on the following dates:

• Village resident campers whose last names begin with A-J will register on Monday, June 17 from 7AM-1PM. • Village resident campers whose last names begin with K-Z will register on Tuesday, June 18 from 7AM-1PM. • They will hold 65 spots for non-village Lindenhurst resident campers. Their registration is Wednesday, June 19 from 7AM-12PM. This will also be late registration day for all village residents, if there are openings. To register, you must provide: 1. A copy of the camper’s immunization records, which will be kept on file (Board Of Health), the doctor’s stamp of signature must be clearly visible. Obtain the record from your doctor/school before your registration date. No application can be accepted unless you have the records.

2. Proof of residency – campers must be eligible to attend Lindenhurst Schools. 3. Proof of kindergarten attendance for all 5/6 year olds – campers have to complete kindergarten by June 28, 2019 to register. Please bring a pen. A reminder, trips and t-shirts will be sold at registration in addition to lunch supervision signup. Expect long lines. Camp begins on Monday, MERCY SOUP KITCHEN - Today the lending hands committee st Rall elementary July 8 and ends on Friday, school made 200 sandwiches for the Mercy soup kitchen. A great group of parents and August 16. Camp hours kids. are 9AM-3PM MondayFriday. As usual, you can inquire about after-care at registration. We will use the Firemen’s Pavilion on rain days. Teachers Awards The 43rd annual Teachers’ Association of Lindenhurst awards ceremony was held on May 20 at Lindenhurst High School. Teachers selected one student from each grade level in every school for recognition. performing group Odyssey and watched a video in which students shared what they believe is the “body part that helps build a good person,” whether a helping hand or a kind heart. National Circus Project Fifth grade students of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently took part in the National Circus Project’s Circus Week as an extension of the school’s physical education program.

National Circus Project professionals, Bert Blague and Keith Leaf, worked with the students throughout the week and prepared them for a culminating performance in which they would demonstrate the skills taught. The fifth

graders practiced circus skills such as walking on stilts, spinning plates and frames, and juggling diablos and devil sticks. They were able to fine tune their hand-eye coordination and motor skills while having fun.
