Village of Lindenhurst Summer Camp Registration Lottery

The Village of Lindenhurst is pleased to announce that, with modifications for COVID-19, it will again be sponsoring the annual Summer Recreation Camp at the Village Park. Camp begins July 5, 2021 and ends August 13, 2021. Camp hours are from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. The camp is open to Lindenhurst children who are eligible to attend the Lindenhurst School District. To be considered, campers must complete kindergarten by June 2021. Campers are grouped by age: 6-7 boys, 6-7 girls, 8-9 boys, 8-9 girls, 1014 boys, and 10-14 girls. We are determined, just as last summer, to follow all recommendations and protocols established by the CDC and Suffolk County Board of Health, as related to the coronavirus. This includes, but is not limited

to: temperature checks, social distancing, masks, hand sanitizing stations and equipment and facility sanitizing. WE ARE CAPPING ENROLLMENT AT 40 CAMPERS PER AGE GROUP AND WILL CONDUCT A LOTTERY FOR THOSE SPOTS. Lottery applications are available on the Village’s website – villageoflindenhurstny.gov. If your child is chosen, you will receive an application and accompanying COVID-19 waiver form via email (be sure to check your spam folder, especially if you have a Gmail account). The application and all pertinent information (including time and place for in person registration, required forms and fees) will be included in the email. Applicants who are not chosen in the lottery will be placed on a waiting list.

APRAXIA AWARENESS DAY - On May 14, 2021, the Village of Lindenhurst acknowledged “Apraxia Awareness Day.” Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is an extremely challenging neurological speech disorder that affects 1-in-1,000 children. The disorder causes children to have significant difficulty learning to speak, and is among the most severe speech deficits in children. Pictured here with Mayor Michael Lavorata is the Pope Family, who have two sons diagnosed with CAS, and who have been working to bring about greater awareness of the disorder. Mayor Lavorata said, “Our highest respect goes to these children, as well as their families, for their effort, determination, and resilience in the face of such obstacles.”

Antonio Bastos is a Long Island resident that served 12 years in the Marine Corps. He had always loved the uniform and had a strong love for our country. After his active duty service he then stayed in the Reserves, as well as being a Civilian Contractor. He currently resides in Mineola and works at Window World of LI in Farmingdale as a Sales Manager. His photo is promoted on a street sign in the Village of Lindenhurst amongst many others as part of their Hometown Heroes promotion, which honors local residents who served our nation. Kim V., Antonio’s girlfriend, shared something special about him. “His Memorial tradition is to visit families of fallen marines to comfort them and provide them with new flags to put up” says Kim. “I couldn’t be more proud of him!” Thank you Antonio for your service!

Interesting facts about Memorial Day dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day. • Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History. com notes that, in 1866, the Georgia-based Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-inchief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.” • It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated

Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. • Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 nowfreed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Join the Rotary Club of Lindenhurst and the Lindenhurst Library for stories, crafts and a costume parade featuring your pup, with a special blessing of the animals by Doug Madlon at 1 pm. Lindenhurst Memorial Library’s Summer Concert Series will feature some of your favorite groups, like Tangerine, The Precisions, Penny Lane Tribute Band, the Golden Tone Orchestra and more! The Board of Trustees anticipates awarding contracts to the lowest responsible bidders this June, with construction beginning in July. The Board of Trustees agreed to adopt a proposal to close the library for the months of July and August. The closure prioritizes patron and staff safety while maximizing construction progress. Now is the time to look over your reading and viewing list! Come in and fill a complimentary tote bag with items, or request curbside pickup for your LML selections. You will have all summer to relax and read, because your items won’t be due back until after Labor Day! But hurry ~ you will want to reserve and check out items before June 15, when staff begins packing up the collection of more than 120,000 items for storage. Although the building will be physically closed, don’t worry, you will find familiar staff faces in some unexpected places throughout the community! Look for us every Saturday, beginning July 3, at the American Venice Farmer’s Market. Staff will also be at the Rainbow Center, Moose Lodge, Village Gazebo Park, the North Lindenhurst Pool and other locations that will be in our upcoming newsletter and on our website. The Library partnered with the Lindenhurst Kiwanis Club to place flags on the graves of local veterans interred at Breslau Cemetery. Our “Windows on Wellwood” stained glass is a lasting memorial to our local military personnel. 232 blue and 15 engraved gold stars honor living or deceased veterans. The gold stars, dedicated to those killed in action, are mounted directly on the windows. A special oak cabinet was constructed to house the blue stars. The cabinet, located under three small stained glass windows, is engraved with the motto, “For Those Who Served”.

Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

We enjoy having you there too.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

It’s much easier to us to talk to you directly about your pet’s health. However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

When used in this Article, the following shall mean: EVENT A single event or activity where food or food samples are distributed to the public, with or without charge, that operates for a period of time not to exceed three (3) consecutive days and not more than twelve (12) days in any particular month. §174-5. Standard of Review. On all applications to the Village Administrator for permits in addition to other specific requirements, the Village Administrator or his designee shall consider the health, safety, convenience and general welfare of the Village. The standards to be considered by the Village Administrator or his designee in making its determination of any matter under this chapter are whether the granting of the permit will be in harmony with the general purpose and intent of the chapter, in accordance with the comprehensive plan and design set forth in the chapter, to lessen congestion in the streets, to secure safety from fire, panic and other dangers, circumstances of the applicant to provide adequate light and air, to prevent the overcrowding of land, to avoid undue concentration of population, to facilitate the adequate provision of transportation, water, sewage, off-street parking, parks and other public requirements; and in accordance with reasonable consideration, among other things, as to the character of the district and its peculiar suitability for the particular use; and with a view to conserving the value of buildings and land and encouraging the most appropriate use of land throughout the municipality. Any issued permit is subject to revocation by the Village Administrator or his designee, and any requested permit may be denied in the event it is determined the use is the subject of legitimate concerns for the public’s health, safety and general well-being. Any permanent revocation or the denial of any permit shall be subject to appeal by the applicant to the Village Board with an opportunity for the applicant to be heard at a public meeting of the Board of

Trustees. §174-6. Fees. The amount payable by each applicant shall be established by resolution of the Village Board. §174-7. Penalties for Offenses. Any person, association, partnership or corporation violating any provisions of this chapter shall be guilty of a violation and shall be punishable by a fine of not less than $250 and not more than $1,000 for each violation, or by imprisonment not to exceed 15 days or a combination of both. §174-8. Severability. If any clause, sentence, paragraph, section or part of this article shall be adjudged by any court of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, such judgment shall not affect, impair or invalidate the remainder thereof but shall be confined in its operation to the clause, sentence, paragraph, section or part thereof directly involved in said judgment. Validity. If any section, sentence, clause, or phrase of this law is held to be invalid or unconstitutional by any court of competent jurisdiction, then said holding shall in no way affect the validity of the remaining portions of this law.
