STILL MAKING SUFFOLK COUNTY BETTER - Marylou Krzeski of Lindenhurst who at age 87 drives to Literacy Suffolk’s Bellport headquarters at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System to work two full time days. After retiring as a commercial insurance account executive 22 years ago, Marylou Krzeski of Lindenhurst started a second “career,” volunteering for Literacy Suffolk as an English language tutor for adults. She also trained to be a tester, helping the program match both native and nonnative English speakers to tutors and to monitor student progress. Today, though, program tutors and staff know her as a capable administrative assistant who at age 87 drives to Literacy Suffolk’s Bellport headquarters at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System to work two full time days. She began working in the Literacy Suffolk office when financial cutbacks dramatically reduced staffing. “Marylou has stood by us through thick and thin,” says Literacy Suffolk

Executive Director Susan Shiloni. “When our office space was downsized and when we came back to the office after the worst of the pandemic, she was right there making order out of the chaos.” Ms. Krzeski was honored during a Literacy Suffolk volunteer recognition breakfast on April 26. During the program, Assistant Deputy County Executive for Suffolk County Olga El Sehamy, presented a special certificate to her on behalf of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for her “exceptional contributions” to the county’s residents. What motivates Ms. Krzeski to drive a half hour to volunteer twice a week when other retirees, years younger, might sleep late and pass their day watching TV? “It is something to look forward to, and I feel

appreciated,” she says. “It keeps my mind sharp, and so long as I stay useful, I’ll think it will stay that way.” Most of Literacy Suffolk’s volunteers are its more than 100 tutors. Because of the pandemic that number is down considerably, and more than 300 adults are waiting to be matched with a tutor. In recognizing Ms. Krzeski’s service, Ms. El Sehamy, an immigrant herself, noted the ripple effect of all Literacy Suffolk’s volunteers: “You may think that you are only helping students, but when you help a person, you’re also helping a family, and you’re helping a community.” Suffolk County residents interested in tutoring or providing administrative support to tutors and staff, as Ms. Krzeski has done, can learn more about Literacy Suffolk at literacysuffolk. org.

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a non-proﬁt organzation that operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufﬁciency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions. This Chronic Health Care Coordination program solely serves people with incomes below the poverty line. Participants, who must be on Medicaid, also often receive various forms of food and housing assistance. Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difﬁcult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.

EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. Union soldiers were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity. Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves. When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course. While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the

On Saturday, May 7th, Declan Davis of Troop 2014 in West Babylon received his Eagle Scout award in a ceremony at American Legion Post #94 in Babylon. For his project, Declan built two outside game tables for the patients of St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, a provider of long-term care to children with medically

complex conditions. Declan is also one of three Troop 2014 Scouts that will graduate in the top ten of their class next month at West Babylon Senior High School! On Friday, April 29th, Troop 398 and the Lindenhurst American Legion celebrated their newest Eagle in Ethan Xavier Lindenberg!

As the graph below shows, while the rate of appreciation will moderate over the next few years, prices will continue rising through 2026:
