Cataracts are the most common eye problem affecting vision. It is estimated that there are about 2 million cataract surgeries in the US each year. The treatment of cataracts has evolved over the years and now we can offer excellent visual outcomes to our patients with minimal risk and low incidence of complications. Inside the eye, there is a lens, which is supposed to be clear, like a camera lens. If this lens becomes cloudy, it is called a cataract. So, a cataract is just a cloudy lens. If there is minimal cloudiness, the vision will not be affected, and that eye may still see well. Sometimes a new eyeglass prescription may help someone see better if there is a mild cataract. Some conditions that will cause a cataract to progress are: age, certain medications, injuries, poorly controlled diabetes, and some inherited conditions. If a cataract’s cloudiness increases to a point where new glasses cannot improve the vision, then surgery is recommended. Some of the symptoms patients may have from a cataract are: difficulty driving and seeing signs, difficulty reading fine print, excessive glare and halos around lights when
driving at night, intolerable glare when in sun, difficulty reading the captions on TV, and inability to see the computer screen clearly. When surgery is recommended, there are many options our patients have so we can customize their visual outcomes. When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens implant is placed in the eye to restore the vision. Different types of implants are available, and we can correct a patient’s vision so they can read without glasses, see distance without glasses, or in some cases use special multifocal lenses so patients can see both distance and close-up without depending on glasses. When a patient becomes a candidate for surgery, many tests and measurements are done, (painless), and then reviewed by the surgeon and patient together to determine the appropriate type of lens for that patient. There are also lens implants that will correct astigmatism, an optical defect of the eye that is usually present throughout life, and treated with glasses or
contact lenses. Now, we can implant a special lens that will correct astigmatism, also to reduce the patient’s dependence on glasses, and to increase the quality of vision after surgery. Over the past 5 years, we have introduced in Suffolk County, the use of a special laser, (a femtosecond laser), to assist with surgery. This laser performs the most difficult and important part of the surgical procedure in about 1 second, reducing the risk of surgery and improving the outcomes of the procedure. The laser can also treat astigmatism, which allows our patients to see very clearly post surgery. Our experience with laser cataract surgery has been extremely positive, with our patients achieving exceptional visual results with very little risk of complications. The actual surgical procedure is performed in a cataract surgical center, as an outpatient. The painless surgery takes about 15 minutes, the patient has light IV sedation for comfort, then has a snack and is discharged to home. There is no patch or stitches and
most patients are able to drive the next day, and return to work in 2-3 days. Only one eye is operated on at a time, and usually, if there is a cataract in the other eye, its surgery is performed within 1-2 weeks. Our patients enjoy excellent vision after this low risk surgery. Of course, there is risk of complications and all precautions are always taken to ensure a successful outcome. Healthy ways to relieve stress throughout the day

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.
Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down. Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation
studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday. Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can
help people combat stress for several hours afterward. Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body. Stress is a part of daily life for many people. But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.

tress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.
Educating oneself about the consequences of unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, may compel people to overcome their bad habits. A 2015 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll found that people tend to be more judgmental of themselves than others when it comes to bad habits. Nearly seven in 10 Americans admitted they judge themselves more than they judge other people. Men and women who are hard on themselves when it comes to their bad habits may want to try some of the following techniques to break those behaviors: Employ the buddy system. Men and women who aspire to lose weight often stay motivated by exercising alongside a friend or family member and/or encouraging their families to adopt certain dietary changes. The buddy system also can be employed when trying to break bad habits. Whether a partner, family member or friend is trying to break the same bad habit or not, having someone along to praise your successes and discourage you from falling back into bad habits can make overcoming certain
behaviors that much easier. Try something new. When trying to quit a bad habit, having something to do in its place can help. For example, men and women who want to spend less time staring at their devices or watching television can benefit from finding something healthy to do in the hours they would normally be spending online or on the couch. For example, adults may find joining a recreational sports league gets them out of the house on weeknights when they would otherwise be sitting at home watching television. Replacing something that’s perceived as a negative habit or behavior with one that’s considered positive can provide the motivation necessary to kick a bad habit. Figure out what’s triggering your bad habit. Another way to kick a bad habit is to understand what triggers it. Such an understanding can help people develop healthier reactions to the triggers,

When necessary, speak to a psychologist about identifying triggers if you cannot identify them on your own. Educate yourself. Adults with especially harmful bad habits, such as excessive alcohol consumption or smoking, may find all the motivation they need to change their behaviors by educating themselves. For instance, smokers may be surprised to learn that, according to the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, more than 10 times as many American citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States combined. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time can cause cardiomyopathy, arrythmia, stroke and high blood pressure. People may recognize that smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are bad for them, but learning just how bad might provide the spark they need to change their ways. Breaking bad habits is seldom easy. But adults who commit to changing their ways can overcome even the worst of habits.

Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle
used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition is a grassroots organization based in Lindenhurst, New York. www.lindycares.org. Our mission involves creating a safe and healthy community for our youth. We hold community meetings during which we listen to the residents, students and teachers, and work with officials to create an environment to find solutions and answers to the current problems facing our students and youth. One important issue facing Long Island families and people all over our nation is underage drinking and addiction. That is why we have partnered with Richard Schaffer, Town Supervisor, Tim Sini, Suffolk County District Attorney and Geraldine Hart, Suffolk County Police Commissioner, to bring this important public safety message about Suffolk County’s Social Host Laws designed and enforced to protect everyone. Underage drinking is illegal and never appropriate. Studies show that people who engage in underage drinking are more susceptible to alcoholism and early experimentation with drugs. Our mission is to bring awareness to this issue and to help people find the resources they need to deal with the problem. Unfortunately, in our culture, drinking has evolved into a tradition or rite of passage. Movies and shows depict drinking as a way to celebrate the end of great events or wind down at the end of the day, but it is not a pastime for anyone under the age of 21. You can say no, and if you do, you are not alone. Our surveys show that many parents and students are uncomfortable with the pressure of prom season and hosting celebratory parties that serve alcohol after sporting events.
Join Us In Promoting Safety And Wellness This Prom Season. What is the Social Host Law? The primary purpose of the Social Host Law is to deter underage drinking parties or gatherings where adults knowingly allow minors to drink alcohol or alcoholic beverages. The law applies to any adult (including a parent) who is over the age of 18 and knowingly allows consumption of alcohol by minors (any person under the age of 21).
Who can be charged? Anyone who is over the age of 18 who: • Owns, rents or otherwise controls any permanent or temporary domicile, including a home, apartment, condominium, cooperative unit, trailer home, recreational vehicle, mobile home, overnight accommodation at a hotel, motel, campsite or short-term rental property, or other dwelling unit of any kind, including yards and open areas adjacent thereto; and • Knowingly allows the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises; • Fails to take reasonable corrective action upon learning of the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises. • Notably, this law does not apply to the consumption of alcohol by a minor whose parent or guardian is present and has expressly permitted such consumption; or the use and consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by a minor for religious purposes. What is “Reasonable Corrective Action?” Reasonable corrective actions shall include, but are not be limited to: • Making a prompt demand that the minor(s) stop drinking the alcoholic beverage or leave the premises; and • If the minor refuses to comply with the request, the adult must promptly report the underage drinking to local law enforcement or any other person with greater degree of authority over the minor (e.g., the minor’s parents or guardians) What are the penalties? 1st offense: Fine not to exceed $500 2nd offense and subsequent offense: Misdemeanor – fine up to $1,000 and/or a term of imprisonment not to exceed one year.

Why is this law needed? This law provides a legal basis for holding adults responsible for knowingly allowing underage drinking to occur at a place under their control, whether or not they provide the alcohol.

Other laws regarding underage persons... The New York State Penal Law, the Alcohol Beverage Control Law, and other state and local regulations make it illegal to engage in unlawful conduct with persons under the age of 21. These laws prohibit the sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 21, the purchase of alcohol for someone who is under the age of 21, and address conduct that endangers the welfare of persons of a protected age. Three students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School – Ashley Collado, Mariana Espinoza and Kembalee Rolle – were selected to receive the Students Building Bridges Award. They were honored for their efforts in building bridges across communities and creating a more civil society at Suffolk County’s Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) program at Suffolk County Community
College on May 3rd. Each student was recognized with a citation from an elected official and a certificate from the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island. The students listened to the story of survival from a Holocaust survivor, Elizabeth Heyn, whom they were able to meet after the ceremony. All three students are active members of various community clubs
and activities in the high school. Collado is a member of the One Mind Club, Tree Huggers, Global Ambassadors and BUTY (Bringing Unity Through Youth Club). Espinoza has played a key role in the successful implementation of two of the school’s newest clubs: the Public Relations Club and Global Ambassadors. Rolle is a member of Key Club and One Mind Club.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY - On May 9th, students from Alleghany Avenue school celebrated National Bicycle Day by riding their bikes to school. Alleghany Avenue would like to thank the Suffolk County Police department for sending officers to speak to the students about bicycle safety as well as providing a safe escort to the school. All of the participants had a great time!

They are seeking volunteers in multiple areas of their organization. Volunteers are needed for their Friendly Visiting Program. They ask for one hour a week of your time to visit with an isolated, homebound senior for socialization and companionship (time is flexible). They will match you with a senior based upon your location and interests. Volunteers are also needed for their Ombudservice Program. Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. If you are interested in donating to this organization, they are seeking donations for their 2018 Summer Camp Fund. Your donation sponsors a fun and educational summer camp experience for a young person involved with FCA. Moving Forward Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment. By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise. If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you? Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive? Situation: Someone is driving and trying to cut into your lane with good reason. Some people (whatever their motive) will pull up closer to the car in front of them and not allow this. To add insult to injury, they will never make eye

The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you
could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

Summer Recreation Program The Incorporated Village of Lindenhurst proudly announces that it will once again be sponsoring the Summer of Fun Recreation Program at Lindenhurst Village Park. Please be reminded, the program is open to Lindenhurst children who are eligible to attend Lindenhurst Public Schools. The registration fee for each Village resident child
is $125 for the season. This fee does not include trips, shirts, lunch supervision, etc. The registration fee for Lindenhurst residents who do not reside in the Village is $200 for the season. Again, trips, shirts, lunch supervision, etc. are not included in the registration fee. Registration will be held at Kienle Little League
Field at the Village Park on the following dates: Village resident campers whose last names begin with K-Z will register on Monday, June 11th, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Village resident campers whose last names begin with A-J will register on Tuesday, June 12th, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. They will hold 65 spots for non-village
Lindenhurst resident campers (i.e. William Rall area students). Your registration is Wednesday, June 13th, from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. This will also be late registration day for all village residents - if there are openings. To register, you must provide: 1. A copy of the camper’s immunization records, which will be kept on
file (Board of Health), the doctor’s stamp or signature must be clearly visible - no application can be accepted unless you have the records. 2. Lindy Vote Results Residents in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District voted to support the 2018-2019 school budget on May 15th by a vote of 1200 to 762. Thank you to all residents who participated in this important vote. In addition to voting on the budget, community residents approved a proposition to establish a new capital reserve fund with a vote of 1231 to 691. This fund will be used to pay for future capital improvement projects, which helps to minimize asking residents for additional tax levy dollars. The capital reserve fund will not exceed $15 million over a 10-year period and will require voter approval to expend its funds at a later time.
Four seats were available on the Board of Education and incumbents Mary Ellen Cunningham, Kevin Garbe and Donna Hochman, who ran unopposed, were re-elected. Cunningham received 1,347 votes, Garbe received 1339 votes and Hochman received 1287 votes. The seat previously held by Trustee Edward J. Murphy, Jr., who resigned earlier in the year, will now be held by Josephine Martino who received 1036 votes to Gabrielle Anzalone’s 747 votes. Martino was sworn in during the May 15th Board of Education Community Forum and will serve the duration of Murphy’s term that expires on June 30th, 2020. The terms of the three incumbent trustees
will commence on July 1st, 2018 and conclude on June 30th, 2021. “We are continually grateful for the support of the Lindenhurst Community,” said Superintendent of Schools Daniel E. Giordano. “The approval of this budget will not only result in the preservation of our full academic program and extra curricular offerings, but it also maintains our programs in athletics, music, performing arts, foreign language and career and technical education. Our ability to provide students with such robust opportunity, is what continues to make this district the home of excellent schools.”

Field Dedicated To recognize the many contributions he has made to both the school and the community, Copiague School District dedicated its baseball field to Tom “T-Bone” Giordano at a ceremony on May 11th. Surrounded by community members, school district administrators, board of education members and friends and family, the sign marking the field’s new moniker was unveiled. Giordano has been involved in the baseball community for 71 years. He served as Copiague’s athletic director from 1968-1979. He has been a Major League player, a minor league manager and spent many years
as a professional scout. Giordano is currently a scout for the Atlanta Braves. He was inducted into the Professional Scouting Hall of Fame in 2008. Ray Negron, community advisor for the New York Yankees, and friend of Giordano, spoke about Giordano’s guidance through the years. “You are a true mentor and have done so much for so many people,” he said. “And you are still doing it every day. Copiague, he is a part of you and 100 years from now, you can look at this sign and remember Tom Giordano.” Copiague varsity baseball coach Bill Bennett, along
with the Copiague athletic department, varsity and junior varsity baseball teams, presented Giordano with a Copiague baseball jersey and made him an honorary team captain. “There are so many people in Copiague, present and past, that played an important part in helping me become a member of the Copiague faculty,” Giordano said. “Copiague became a great part of my life. The years that I had at Copiague were not even paralleled by my years in baseball. This is where I started and this is why I am so happy to be here today.”
