Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor active,
reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service of their country. • Help Veterans of Foreign Wars distribute red poppies as a visual reminder of the military’s efforts. • Volunteer at a veterans’ hospital or visit a wounded veteran at home. • Offer financial, legal or career expertise through the Corporation for National & Community Service (serve. gov). • Help to maintain the veteran area of a nearby cemetery. Place flags on all of the graves. • Befriend military families who frequently relocate, making a concerted effort to welcome them into your community. • Educate children about past wars and the services the military provides. • Visit a military museum or historic site. • Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm local time for one minute. • Post a message to the troops at the USO website (uso.org).

Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today.

Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition is a grassroots organization based in Lindenhurst, New York. www.lindycares.org. Our mission involves creating a safe and healthy community for our youth. We hold community meetings during which we listen to the residents, students and teachers, and work with officials to create an environment to find solutions and answers to the current problems facing our students and youth. One important issue facing Long Island families and people all over our nation is underage drinking and addiction. That is why we have partnered with Richard Schaffer, Town Supervisor, Tim Sini, Suffolk County District Attorney and Geraldine Hart, Suffolk County Police Commissioner, to bring this important public safety message about Suffolk County’s Social Host Laws designed and enforced to protect everyone. Underage drinking is illegal and never appropriate. Studies show that people who engage in underage drinking are more susceptible to alcoholism and early experimentation with drugs. Our mission is to bring awareness to this issue and to help people find the resources they need to deal with the problem. Unfortunately, in our culture, drinking has evolved into a tradition or rite of passage. Movies and shows depict drinking as a way to celebrate the end of great events or wind down at the end of the day, but it is not a pastime for anyone under the age of 21. You can say no, and if you do, you are not alone. Our surveys show that many parents and students are uncomfortable with the pressure of prom season and hosting celebratory parties that serve alcohol after sporting events.
Join Us In Promoting Safety And Wellness This Prom Season. What is the Social Host Law? The primary purpose of the Social Host Law is to deter underage drinking parties or gatherings where adults knowingly allow minors to drink alcohol or alcoholic beverages. The law applies to any adult (including a parent) who is over the age of 18 and knowingly allows consumption of alcohol by minors (any person under the age of 21). Why is this law needed? This law provides a legal basis for holding adults responsible for knowingly allowing underage drinking to occur at a place under their control, whether or not they provide the alcohol.

Who can be charged? Anyone who is over the age of 18 who: • Owns, rents or otherwise controls any permanent or temporary domicile, including a home, apartment, condominium, cooperative unit, trailer home, recreational vehicle, mobile home, overnight accommodation at a hotel, motel, campsite or short-term rental property, or other dwelling unit of any kind, including yards and open areas adjacent thereto; and • Knowingly allows the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises; • Fails to take reasonable corrective action upon learning of the consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by any minor on such premises. • Notably, this law does not apply to the consumption of alcohol by a minor whose parent or guardian is present and has expressly permitted such consumption; or the use and consumption of alcohol or alcoholic beverages by a minor for religious purposes.
What are the penalties? 1st offense: Fine not to exceed $500 2nd offense and subsequent offense: Misdemeanor – fine up to $1,000 and/or a term of imprisonment not to exceed one year.

What is “Reasonable Corrective Action?” Reasonable corrective actions shall include, but are not be limited to: • Making a prompt demand that the minor(s) stop drinking the alcoholic beverage or leave the premises; and • If the minor refuses to comply with the request, the adult must promptly report the underage drinking to local law enforcement or any other person with greater degree of authority over the minor (e.g., the minor’s parents or guardians)

Other laws regarding underage persons... The New York State Penal Law, the Alcohol Beverage Control Law, and other state and local regulations make it illegal to engage in unlawful conduct with persons under the age of 21. These laws prohibit the sale of alcohol to persons under the age of 21, the purchase of alcohol for someone who is under the age of 21, and address conduct that endangers the welfare of persons of a protected age. Penalties are severe, and in many cases can result in significant fines and/or imprisonment. Help us keep our young community members safe. Reports of a possible overdose, intoxicated or impaired driver, or other emergency should be called into 911 immediately. Illegal consumption of alcohol by minors should be reported without delay. Information regarding future parties where alcohol or other substances will be unlawfully consumed can be called in to the Suffolk County Police Department’s “Cancel the Keg” hotlines. Officers will make a custom notification to the residence to let the homeowners know that law enforcement is aware of the impending party and explain the social host law and the consequences of violating it. Rewards may be available and, most importantly, you may save a life! SEPTA Honors Students Lindenhurst School District congratulated students who received special recognition at the annual Special Education PTA awards night held recently in the Lindenhurst High School auditorium. “This evening we recognize students throughout the district who have been selected
by their teachers to be honored for their academic achievement, effort, work ethic and contribution to the school environment,” said Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Pupil Personnel, Bret Kearney. “We must also thank all of the teachers and administrators, for
the constant support, encouragement and guidance that they offer the students of Lindenhurst.” Students from each of the elementary schools, the middle school and the high school were then presented with certificates in recognition of their achievements.

In support of local fire departments, Gershow Recycling donated the use of 30 cars for the Twelfth Annual Chuck Varese Vehicle Extrication Tournament, which was held at the Northport Fire Department’s Training Grounds at Steer’s Pit in Northport on May 11. Gershow also donated the use of its Huntington facility to enable teams to practice in the week leading up to the
tournament. Twenty-two teams from twelve fire departments participated in the tournament, which involved groups of five firefighters working to extricate a “victim” from a “crash” using the Jaws of Life. Each team was judged on the amount of time it took to perform the extrication, the handling of equipment and the safety procedures they followed. After the tournament, the
vehicles were brought back to Gershow’s facility, where they were shredded and recycled. Gershow has nine locations in Brooklyn, New Hyde Park, Valley Stream, Freeport, Lindenhurst, Huntington Station, Bay Shore, Medford and Riverhead. National Circus Project Fifth grade students of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently took part in the National Circus Project’s Circus Week as an extension of the school’s physical education program.
National Circus Project professionals, Bert Blague and Keith Leaf, worked with the students throughout the week and prepared them for a culminating performance in which they would demonstrate the skills taught. The fifth
graders practiced circus skills such as walking on stilts, spinning plates and frames, and juggling diablos and devil sticks. They were able to fine tune their hand-eye coordination and motor skills while having fun.
Rainbow Center Celebrates 45th Anniversary Mayor Michael Lavorata was recently on hand to be part of the Rainbow Senior Center’s 45th Anniversary Celebration. The Rainbow Center held an open house for the community’s seniors to learn about the Rainbow Center. The celebration included a luncheon, a presentation from Village
Historian Anna Jaeger on the history of the Rainbow Center, follow by coffee and cake. Mayor Lavorata said, “It is a privilege to be celebrating 45 wonderful of our Rainbow Senior Citizen Center and its service to our community. Special thank you to Director of Senior Citizens Barbara Poldino and the

This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present. From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a
way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. If you want to meet a B.A.C.A. representative and find out additional information on their organization you can attend one of the following upcoming events, where B.A.C.A. will have a tent set up with brochures and more: Alive After Five: Thursday, June 27, 2019 in Patchogue. The Great South Bay Music Festival: Saturday, July 20, 2019 and Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Patchogue. If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Agape Community Church believes community support is crucial to helping these children. Donations of any size are welcome. Living In The Past Dressed in period jackets and dresses, fourth grade students of Harding Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District bartered, bargained and boasted about life in early America during their Colonial Fair on May 10. After researching the 16091776 time period, students took on the roles of certain
trades and occupations to present at the fair. Visitors attended the fair and saw a schoolhouse, doctor’s office, a quilting bee, blacksmith’s shoppe, carpenter’s shoppe as well as a wigmaker, candle and soap maker. Guests also played with Colonial toys, explored home goods and tools of the era, and mingled with townspeople
and musicians. “This was a fun way to learn about history and what kids did then,” said Isabelle Gutierrez. “I think so too,” added Emma Fitzgerald. “I think it was better to be a kid then because they actually made their toys and things instead of just playing on our iPads.”

Lindenhurst Champions Recognized Lindenhurst Middle School students were honored during the recent May Breakfast for Champions celebration coordinated by middle school educator Kathy Curran. Held at the Lindencrest Diner, the breakfast, now in its 21st year, identifies students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle
school. Students are nominated by teachers for a variety of reasons and are recognized publically in front of proud parents, teachers and peers. With proud parents and teachers looking on, students received their certificates of merit from Principal Frank Naccarato who shared with the group the various examples of
leadership and generosity that resulted in their selection. “These students represent Lindy Pride,” he said. “Every one of you has displayed pride in your school, in your community and in yourself. I congratulate you on behalf of all of the teachers.

LEMONADE STAND WAR - Harding Avenue Book Cafe students held a lemonade stand war between 4th and 5th graders after reading the book “Lemonade War”. Proceeds from all the stands went to support to the National MS Society. The 4th grade group shown below includes Luke Albert, Megan Shotter, Angelina Gambino, Noah Johanson, Hannah Drennan, and Olivia Salvato, who won first place in raising the most funds for the National MS Society. Preschool Scholarships Available Just Kids, located at the Kellum Street School, is offering limited scholarships for general education children residing within the Lindenhurst School District to attend their preschool program beginning September 2019. Three-year-old classes will meet either from 8:30-11 a.m. (morning session) or
12-2:30 p.m. (afternoon session). Four-year-old classes are only offered full day and will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Please note that snacks/ lunch will NOT be provided to the students and will be the responsibility of the parents.
