Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. has been appointed as the Executive Director of the Suffolk County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) by County Executive Steve Bellone. In this role, Sheriff Toulon will help direct the County’s criminal justice policy and work to enhance collaboration among government, law enforcement and nonprofit agency partners. Since taking Office in January, Sheriff Toulon has focused significant attention on better utilizing data and analysis to improve the internal operations of the Sheriff’s Office and to enhance intelligence resources aimed at fighting the opioid epidemic and dismantling criminal gang networks. He has also pledged to enhance prevention programs designed to break the “school to prison pipeline.”

am still in the process of realizing those aspects of the vast field of journalism which really inspire me. I am open to learn, eager to explore and always looking to improve upon those skills I originally honed all those decades ago. I believe this process is never complete; those who have worked in a particular field for twice as long as I have can surely attest to this fact. Who’s to say that anyone has to stay with one particular venture for a lifetime anyway? The world is constantly evolving, as are we; and the nature of most careers tends to necessitate a versatility that didn’t always exist prior. We all have untapped skills to be utilized, curiosities to indulge and talents to cultivate. So, here’s to 13, a number like any other, if you ask me. May it signify all the experience gained thus far, and the adventures yet to unfold.

it - even school, which often seems like an infinite chunk of time, is divided into segments of elementary, junior high and senior high. College, if it follows, is usually segmented into four-year intervals. Thirteen years… well that’s an entirely different level of commitment, is it not? And yet, even in the workforce, time tends to separate into stages. It begins with the formative years of finding your footing in a particular field, still unsure of what the job entails and what your responsibilities will include. Everything is new and exciting as you realize - hey, I’m really doing this! These are followed by the years of transition, when positions may be altered, new projects will come and go, and you begin to discover your particular strengths and weaknesses en route to finding your true passion. Thirteen years in, and I

I’ve known many people with an aversion to this perceived “unlucky” number, whether serving as a date of particular significance or - the more common superstition - when it should happen to fall on a Friday, of all days. Personally, I’ve taken special care to note any particularly negative occurrences on these infrequent juxtapositions of day and date, with thankfully few to report. Just another day, as they say. And with that, today - May 2nd - I commemorate the 13th anniversary of my start date here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Over one dozen years ago, I began my journey into the world of journalism, straight from college. At the time, thirteen years would have certainly seemed like an eternity to spend in any one establishment. Think about

ART PROJECT ROCKS - Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District is coming together for a schoolwide recycled art project. During the first weeks in April, students are painting a rock to resemble a fish during their respective art classes. Inspired by the book “Only One You” by Linda Kranz, Great Neck Road art teacher Meghan Haughney tasked each of the students with creating their own fish-look rocks. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. If you are someone who faces any sort of disability or an emotional or vulnerable problem, please visit their website to learn more about how they can help you - and don’t hesitate to get help! Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual Day at the Races, which will be on June 8th at the Belmont Race Track. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, Par Fore the Horse, will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, a cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Lastly, Pal-O-Mine features a Wish List on their website, which lists items they use every day that you can donate! It all started with a good book... As I sat down with Lisa Gatti, CEO & Founder of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., I had the privilege to learn about what her organization does to help those in need, as well as how it all began. PalO-Mine Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. Lisa grew up knowing she loved horses, but she really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written about: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-ofthe-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Electric Bus Visits More than 50 school district leaders got their first look at what many say is the future of pupil transportation – the first U.S. made all-electric, zero-emissions school bus. Currently on an inaugural cross-country tour, this battery-powered prototype bus made a stop in Bay Shore, Long Island, where school board members, superintendents and transportation officials participated in a two-hour introduction and test ride of the bus. The event was hosted by Suffolk Transportation Service, Suffolk County’s largest pupil transportation provider. The bus was built

by Blue Bird Corporation, one of three main school bus makers in the U.S., and its batteries and drivetrain were developed by Adomani Electric. “Electric and hybrid buses will have a big role in the future of pupil transportation on Long Island. Our school districts already know this and have been asking us when an electric bus will be available,” said John Corrado, President and CEO of Suffolk Transportation Service. “In the last several years, we began to develop our own hybrid vehicle and also encouraged Blue Bird, one of the nation’s largest bus

manufacturers, to focus on electric technology.” In just the last several years, advances in battery technology have greatly increased the potential range for electric-powered school buses, making them far more viable for everyday fleet use. The buses “plug in” overnight and have a potential range up to 125 miles per charge. “The first thing you notice is that it has no tailpipe. It is literally the cleanest school bus in the U.S., yet has just as much power as a gas or diesel powered vehicle,” said Phil Horlock, President of Blue Bird Corporation, who discussed the bus at the

event. “Mechanically, the bus is amazingly simple and as a result, is much easier and less costly to maintain. Of course, it offers huge savings on fuel costs.” “We encourage and welcome the commitment of Blue Bird, which is taking the lead in producing buses that run on alternative sources of energy,” said Corrado who said he expects that an all-electric bus will begin operating on a regular school district route in Suffolk County sometime this year. Suffolk Transportation Service operates over 1,400 vehicles, mainly diesel buses and gasoline vans,

serving 18 school districts. The event was hosted by the Islip Town School Board Association, compromised of board of education members from districts throughout the Town of Islip. “We’re very excited to be at a point at which this cutting edge bus is ready to go into service. This can be a win-win for both the taxpayers and the environment,” said Sue Schnebel, Superintendent of Islip School District. Another attendee was Fred Koelbel, Director of Facilities and Transportation for Port Jefferson School District. “What a message students receive when

they ride on a bus like this. There are messages about sustainability, green energy, and messages about the future. This becomes something they are exposed to every day on their way to and from school,” he said. While electric buses are more costly, members of the Islip Town School Board Association learned about grants and funding approaches that may be available which can dramatically bring down the initial $350,000 price tag.

Heading to Championship The Lindenhurst High School FIRST Robotics Team 533, the PSIcotics, recently competed in the FIRST/SBPLI Long Island Regional Competition #1 at Hofstra University in Hempstead. The team was ranked second overall with a

record of 14-5-0, named regional finalists, and won the Excellence in Engineering Award sponsored by Delphi. Additionally the PSIcotics were awarded a wildcard entry position to the FIRST Championship in Detroit, Michigan, on April 25th,

2018. The robotics program consists of students in grades nine through 12 who successfully implement STEM concepts as they construct a robot to achieve a specific task outlined in a global competition.

The purpose of the event is to recognize outstanding leaders in Village government. In 2016, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin J. McCaffrey received the Outstanding

SEPTA Honors Students Lindenhurst School District congratulated students who received special recognition at the annual Special Education PTA awards night held recently in the Lindenhurst High School auditorium. “This evening we recognize students throughout the district who have been selected

by their teachers to be honored for their academic achievement, effort, work ethic and contribution to the school environment,” said Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Pupil Personnel, Bret Kearney. “I am thrilled to be the first to congratulate all of the recipients and commend

them for their dedication and commitment to their academics.” Students from each of the elementary schools, the middle school and the high school were then presented with certificates in recognition of their achievements.

Showcasing songs throughout the decades, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School presented its annual POPs concert in the auditorium on April 18th. The Madrigal Singers, lead by choral director Gina Occhiogrosso, kicked off the show with an evolution of music through the years. Jonah Ramdas performed “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire and was followed by the duo of Kyree Scott and Kaitlyn Besse showcasing Elton John’s “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” Ladrea Buffaloe and Kayla Urban took to the stage for Sia’s rendition of “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” Darley Senat sang Demi Lovato’s “Tell Me You Love Me” and was followed by

Jamila Jackson with Kevin Gates’ “Satellites.” “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina & The Waves got the audience on their feet, performed by Jessica Chochorek, Liana Daubel, Aryana Arias, Ariano Tirino and Shannon Greenlee. Nicholas Favichia gave a heartfelt performance of Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You,” followed by Kayla Dixon’s soulful version of “Praying” by Kesha. Closing out the first half of the show was Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” performed by James Holland. Elenys Diaz and Yaderson Espinal showcased their musical talent with Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” and Kyree Scott again took the stage for “Love Me Now” by John Legend. Samantha

Designated Agent Form

The designated agent form is one of the most important pieces of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is filled out before the deceased has passed away, designating one person to take care of the funeral arrangements. Most people believe that documents such as health care proxy or power of attorney take care of these measures and give the named person power to make funeral arrangements. This is a common misconception. These documents are null and void when the deceased person has passed on. The right of funeral arrangements would then pass to the closest next of kin, and in the case of multiple children gets evenly distributed. The designated agent form resolves this issue by signifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations with cremation, where a person passes away having multiple children spread across the country. In cremation, signatures are needed from all children in order to have the process completed. If one person objects, cremation cannot be done. With the designated agent form, only one signature is needed from the designated person. This makes the arrangement process go much smoother. To some parents it is worse than the discussion about the “birds and the bees” they had with their children 40 years ago. An open discussion with our children about your wishes after you pass away is a tremendous benefit to you and your children. A family discussion will avert the tragic situation that happened when Ted Williams died several months ago. My philosophy has been, the funeral is more for the survivors than for the deceased. I recently spoke with a woman who did not want her children to be bothered when she died. She wanted to pay for a direct cremation without any services or viewing and she did not want to discuss it with her children. She wanted to make sure that she would be cremated before her children could get here from out of state. I suggested she first discuss this matter with her children. She said it was only her decision. I then asked her what she would do if heaven forbid one of her children died and if they were cremated before she could say good-bye. She simply said she would never talk to her daughter or son in laws again. She then looked at me, picked up the papers, put them in her pocketbook and said I will be back after I discuss this matter with all my children. Some people do not ever wish to see the person after they die. They want to remember the person alive. Some people need the opportunity for closure and need to view their loved one before interment or cremation. Whatever your wishes are, I simply ask you discuss the matter with those who will suffer most after you are gone. Remember the funeral is more for them than it is for you. Splashers were greeted by clear skies and sharks at AHRC Suffolk's Annual Polar Bear Splash on Saturday, April 21st at the Bay Shore Marina. Orlando from 94.3 The Shark showed his support for AHRC Suffolk by splashing into spring as well as Finn the SCCC Sharks Spirit Team mascot! Over one hundred people from local schools

and communities gathered to help raise money and awareness for AHRC Suffolk's Mission. Many Splashers meandered around the beach before the actual splash listening to music and enjoying the new playground at the Marina! However, when it came time to go all in there was no shortage of splashers willing to dive into the icy

waters of the Bay! All proceeds from this event directly benefit AHRC Suffolk's programs and services throughout their 42 facilities in Suffolk County. Scholarships Awarded

Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), one of the country’s largest credit unions, awarded two $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarships to SUNY Old Westbury students Jack Benjamin and Magdalena Zielinska. The educational scholarship reflects TFCU’s ongoing efforts to provide support and encouragement to local students within the communities it serves. Magdalena Zielinska, a junior, is an accounting major. She is a graduate of Lindenhurst High School and lives in Lindenhurst. TFCU also awarded the Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship to Magdalena in 2016 when she was a sophomore at SUNY Old Westbury. Jack Benjamin, a junior, is also majoring in accounting. He is a graduate of Upper Room POLAR BEAR SPLASH - Over a hundred Splashers braved the icy bay to raise Christian School in Dix Hills and lives in Deer money for AHRC Suffolk.

Park. Nicholas Maletta, for whom this scholarship is named, began serving on TFCU’s Board of Directors in 1983. In 1991 he was elected Vice Chairman, a position he held until his passing in 2012. In recognition of his 29 years of selfless volunteer work, the $5,000 Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship Award was established for students who have graduated from a Long Island high school and who are enrolled in SUNY Old Westbury’s School of Business. “The recipients of the two TFCU Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship awards are on the road to achieving their educational goals. A strong academic foundation is critical for long-term career success. At TFCU, we are committed to recognizing academic excellence and supporting outstanding students like

Magdalena and Jack,” said Robert G. Allen, CEO/ President of TFCU. SUNY Old Westbury students applying for the Nicholas Maletta Memorial Scholarship must be enrolled in a degree program of the School of Business and meet other criteria.
