ne of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another cold day. Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after a spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil. Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in.

However, since the National Association of Realtors reported a record low housing inventory late in 2020, the average house price has been rising rapidly nationwide. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis estimates the median home sales price at $374,900, and certain states have much higher prices. Most people do not have $300,000 to $600,000 in savings on hand to purchase a home in cash. That means they’ll need to rely on financing to pay for their dream homes. Conventional lending Conventional lending refers to when a bank or another financial institution loans a home buyer money to buy a home. This is one of the most common ways to fund a home purchase. Personal credit score as well as credit history help determine eligibility and interest rates for conventional loans. Availability of assets as well as income level are some additional determining factors. Conventional loans are traditionally 10-, 15- or 30-year notes and will require a certain percentage as the down payment to secure the loan. The bank will determine the down payment requirement, which is typically somewhere between 3 and 20 percent. FHA loan

These investors can tap into capital from personal connections and lend at specified interest rates and payback periods, according to Fortune Builders, a real estate investing resource. Keep in mind the interest rate will likely be higher with a private lender than through a conventional lender. The repayment term also will be shorter. VA-backed loan The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has a program for acquiring loans through conventional lenders that will be partially guaranteed against loss through the VA. This enables a lender to give better loan terms, such as the option to pay no down payment. Interested parties need to qualify for a Certificate of Eligibility and then work with qualified lenders. People have several options to finance the purchase of a home. These loans can help make the dream of home ownership a reality. Potential buyers are urged to speak with mortgage professionals or financial planners to consider their options.

Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. In this article we focus on their vital role in promoting foster care across Long Island. As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls. The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker. The goal is adoption for 28 percent.

On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills. Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

The organization places children in the most appropriate and nurturing home settings for their recovery and healing, all geared toward permanency and stabilization. By providing the best opportunity for successful placement, Hope For Youth also prevents multiple placements. They also emphasize the role that relative and kinship caregivers

play in the child welfare system and helps children and youth stay connected to their family, their community and their cultural roots if they are unable to safely remain at home. The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reunification for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families. The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest. Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulfilling lives. arm weather often gives rise to thoughts about spending time in the great outdoors. Decks can expand outdoor living spaces, making them popular home additions. However, when it comes time to map out a deck building plan, individuals may be unsure as to which deck material will meet their needs. Wood and composite decks are among the most popular choices today, and the popularity of aluminum is growing steadily. Wood

Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. According to the wood resource Real Cedar, some people think that wood is too expensive and requires too much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be very cost-effective decking options. According to Remodeling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks retain considerable resale value. In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include cedar and redwood. Popular Mechanics says both species contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resistant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Periodic cleaning and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be much more durable than people may think. Composite Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber, are some of the fastest-growing decking materials on the market. Many products are made from polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride. Some
composites will be comprised of recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather- and stain-resistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter. Composite manufacturers continually experiment with manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural wood grain. However, mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are not completely maintenance-free. Aluminum Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there are reasons why this decking material is becoming more popular. According to LockDry®, a manufacturer of aluminum decking materials, power-coated aluminum does not need to be replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most planks have interlocking edges that create gap-free, watertight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a very strong but lightweight material. Some people may think that aluminum decks would be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler in the sun because of its heat-dissipation properties.
