Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. A commemorative annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Service will be part of the weekly Friday evening Sabbath Services held on April 24 by Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge. Holocaust Remembrance Day is a day where we remember the six million Jews and millions of others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The livestreaming Friday Night Shabbat Services, due to COVID 19, will be held at 7:30pm. 2020 will be Holocaust Survivor Mireille Taub, of Long Island. Ms. Taub was born in Paris, France and was lucky enough to take the last train out before France surrendered to the Nazis. Her train was bombed; she and her family walked to safety, traveled across the Pyrenees and passed through Spain and Portugal, arriving in New York on August 11, 1940. She was not quite two years old. She grew up hearing stories about how her family made preparations to leave (as of 1936) if the Nazis were victorious. Mireille Taub has a professional diploma in special education and a Master’s Degree in reading.

How Earth Day And Environmental Conciousness Have Evolved

Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. Itâ€™s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness. An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book â€œSilent Springâ€? by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon. But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet. Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement. This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.

Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment. Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools. Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Today, more than 190 countries are engaged and more than one billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, advises the Earth Day Network. To mark the 50th anniversary, the most pressing topic for the year is climate change. Climate Action is the 2020 Earth Day theme to engage the global public. There is still work to be done, but great progress has been made since 1970.

granted.Â I am grateful that our grocery stores are open and the shelves stocked.Â I am grateful to the staff of our local restaurants and eateries for providing takeout and delivery.Â I am thankful, and so proud, of our Lindenhurst Fire Department EMTs, and our volunteer Fire Fighters & Rescue Company, for their selfless service during this difficult time.Â I am grateful for our Department of Public Works employees for picking up our garbage and recyclables daily.Â I am grateful for our doctors, nurses, and hospital workers who are laboring tirelessly trying to save lives.Â It is often during difficult times that we see the best of people, and, once again, the people of Lindenhurst have shown us their best.Â I am so grateful to be your Mayor. We will get through this

together; we have been through worse.Â What has always made us â€œLindy Strongâ€? is our sense of community, and it is our shared bond of support and concern that will get us through the next few weeks.Â Remember, it is always darkest before the dawn; DO not give up.Â We will overcome this virus and get back to normal life, together.Â I love Lindenhurst and your Village government is here for you. Necessity – Still the Mother of Invention Science-minded Catholic School Family School Builds Ventilator in Kitchen

NECESSITY – STILL THE MOTHER OF INVENTION - Robert and Michael Stadelman work on their ventilator prototype on the floor of their kitchen. For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit. Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator! During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work

with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors, not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750.00 and $3000.00, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355.00 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755.00-to $2300.00. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service, the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial, you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye, and that a funeral service with a wake, even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive, is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.

COVID-19; and as a result, on March 15, 2020, the Town of Babylon also declared a State of Emergency; and

WHEREAS, on or about December 31, 2019, the first reported case of severe phenomena was reported in China, and by January 7, 2020, the virus was identified as a new coronavirus, COVID-19; and WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic is in many ways a completely unprecedented situation, and as such, is an imminent threat to public health; and WHEREAS, on March 7, 2020 the State of New York declared a State of Emergency to allow New York’s government to respond faster by lifting regulations, as the number of coronavirus cases in New York rises; and WHEREAS, on March 12, 2020 the County of Suffolk declared a State of Emergency, which lifts some restrictions and provides powers including bypassing purchasing regulations, thus allowing the county to act more quickly; and

WHEREAS, on March 13, 2020, two residents of the Town of Babylon tested positive for

WHEREAS, as Mayor of the Village of Lindenhurst, I desire to declare a state emergency to ensure we have the tools to respond to COVID-19 and the Village’s needs more quickly and effectively; and WHEREAS, pursuant to the powers of local government, the Mayor of a Village within the State of New York is empowered to act in a situation such as this, in the best interest of the public and to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the public, and; WHEREAS, New York State Executive Law, Section 24, Article 2-B, authorizes Mayor of a Village within the State of New York to act in a situation such as this, in the best interest of the public and to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the public, and; WHEREAS, New York State Executive Law, Section 24, Article 2-B, authorizes Mayor of a Village within the State of New York to act in situations such as that aforementioned and in accord therewith, to declare a Local State of Emergency.
