Gardeners who ﬁnd themselves battling aches and pains after spending time in the garden may need to make a greater effort to reduce injuries and improve comfort when tilling, weeding or installing new landscape features. Ergonomic gardening techniques and tools can help gardeners reduce their risk of injury and make gardening more comfortable.

Warm Up

Just as novice athletes wouldn’t dive right into a strenuous workout at the gym, nor should novice gardeners immediately pick up a shovel and jump into digging a hole for their new tree. Gardening requires bending, stooping, lifting, twisting and other movements that work the entire body. Spending 10 or more minutes stretching, walking and doing a few back and arm rotations can limber the body up for the physical activity to come.

Use Proper Form

Think about the mechanics of lifting weights during a workout, as home and garden tasks may mimic movements made when exercising. The occupational therapists at Bend Spinal Care say that strain on the lower back can be reduced by positioning objects close to the body and its center of gravity when lifting them. Furthermore, people can contract their abdominal (core) muscles when lifting and bending to support the back. When lifting heavy objects, power should be derived from the legs and buttocks rather than the back.

Keep Items Close

Keeping work closer to the body will reduce the need for stooping, leaning or

reaching, which should cut down on pulled muscles. Long-handled tools can help minimize reaching. Use step ladders to reach high areas or get down on padded cushions to work closer to the ground. This alleviates strain to the neck from having to look up or down for extended periods of time. Raised garden beds can bring plants to a person’s level. The therapists at ProCare Physical Therapy say that working below shoulder level whenever possible can prevent shoulder strains; otherwise, perform tasks for no more than ﬁve minutes at a time.

Invest in New Tools

Cushioned grips and grip handles can prevent wrist fatigue, as can hand tools that keep wrists straight to improve strength and reduce repetitive motion injuries. Long-handled tools and push mowers should be as tall as the person using them. Seek out tools that keep the body in natural positions to maximize efﬁciency. Even though gardening is viewed as a relaxing pastime, the work involved can be taxing on the body. Ergonomic tools and proper form can keep injuries at bay.

Install security systems

Remove fall hazards

Safety devices installed on windows that are above ground level can keep children safe. Stair rails should be secure and in good working order. Temporary gates can block kids from getting on stairways. Improve lighting around staircases to help children and adults avoid falls, and remove any obstacles.

Anchor heavy furniture

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that unanchored televisions and top-heavy furniture can tip over onto children and cause severe injuries and even death. Everyday furniture can be tempting to climb; therefore, using anchors to secure furniture to walls for security is a must.

Install locking cabinets

Locking cabinets can keep medications, household chemicals, home improvement paints and solvents, and other potential poisons out of reach.

Erect fencing around pools and yards

Install fencing around pools to keep children from wandering close to the water’s edge. Towns and cities may require certain fence heights or selflatching gates to keep little ones safe. Young children should never be left to their own devices around any source of water, whether it’s a pool, tub or toilet.

Test and replace smoke alarms

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are only useful if they are functional. Homeowners should inspect such devices regularly to ensure proper operation and promptly replace old or faulty detectors to improve safety.

When the goal is to hang multiple pictures, treat the entire grouping as

a single unit. This means creating the layout and ﬁnding the center of the middle piece of the grouping. To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. These templates can then be easily taped to the wall and rearranged until the grouping is ideal. There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

An Open Letter to the Lindenhurst Educational Community Dear Parents of the Lindenhurst Community, Starting on Wednesday, April 11, New York State students from grades 3-8 will once again be asked to participate in the English and Math assessments. We are writing to let you know that you, as the parent of a third through eighth grader, have a choice about whether or not your child will take these tests. The “Opt Out” movement has been at the forefront of the fight to save Public Education. There are politicians whose agenda is to privatize education. We, as parents, teachers and members of a public school learning community, will not stand idly by while these threats persist. The “Opt Out” movement has been instrumental in educating and unifying parents, school officials and educational communities alike. The power of showing politicians that the parents have the power when it comes to public education has helped enact positive change for our students throughout our state. The Time of the Season And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season. Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it? It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with. Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case. As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Exploring the Industry

On March 28th, members of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District community enjoyed the 14th annual “Evening of Dance” performances held at Lindenhurst High School. The evening was filled with beautiful music, dancers and costumes. Members of the inaugural middle school dance program took to the stage this year joining the high school dancers for the first

time. The Lindenhurst dance program is one of the few on Long Island taught by an accredited dance teacher, Kristine Lyons, and attracts serious dance students. Donning colorful costumes, and playing popular music, the students demonstrated dance genres including ballet, modern, lyrical, jazz, hip-hop and more. The dancers worked hard

to present a show that was a varied representation of dancing styles. With close to 20 performances, they did just that. “I am in awe of these students and their talent,” said Ms. Lyons, who also serves as the director of choreography. “Watching them grow as dancers has been a transformation of love for me every day.”

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined the Copiague Fire Department this weekend at its 90th annual Installation Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The event, held on Saturday, March 24th, at the Huntington Hilton in Melville, celebrated outgoing officers finishing their tenures and welcomed new leadership. To benefit the American Heart Association and learn about the effects of heart disease, students at Copiague Middle School participated in a Hoops for Heart fundraiser to raise money for the organization on March 23rd and 26th during their physical education classes. During a basketballthemed obstacle course, students were timed as

they raced through the different stations. Students recorded their time on a poster for the different classes to attempt to beat. The Copiague Middle School students are hoping to meet or exceed their goal of $5,000 raised during last year’s event. Not only did students help raise money for a good cause, they learned about leading a heart-

healthy lifestyle and making positive choices. Hoops for Heart is a national fundraising program sponsored jointly by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of America and the AHA. Through the program, students raise funds for the AHA while participating in activities that promote physical fitness.

Breakfast for Champions Now in its 20th year, the Breakfast for Champions recognizes students of the Lindenhurst Middle School that embodies special characteristics that make them stand out to the teachers who nominate them. The event which is coordinated monthly by middle school

educator Kathy Curran, was held on March 28th. Held at the Lindencrest Diner, the breakfast honors students for a variety of reasons including their willingness to try, their ability to brighten someone’s day, or because they always go above and be-

yond. Students are recognized publically with certificates of merit as proud parents, teachers and peers cheer them on “These students standing before are the reason I talk about Lindy Pride,” said Principal Frank Naccarato.

It Is A Time To Be Accommodated Not Accommodating When making funeral arrangements I often hear the grieving family worry about this person or that person. The family worries about how people would find out about the funeral and how they would get to the funeral home in time for the funeral. If they should have visiting one day or two days or no visiting at all. When asked for advice, I recommend the family to do what is best for them. It is the immediate family that must be accommodated by all others. It is not the obligation of the immediate family who has just suffered the loss of their mother or father or wife or husband that need worry about what everybody else wants. It is everybody else’s job to make sure the immediate family has want they need or want. In other words the immediate family should be accommodated by everyone else and not be worrying about accommodating everyone else’s wishes.
