Safe Boating Course

BABYLON ANIMAL HOSPITAL

Captree Power Squadron will be offering America’s Boating Course for new and seasoned boaters. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a New York State safe boating certificate, which meets all state educational requirements for operating a boat or PWC. Course will be held at the North Babylon Pool Building, 151 Phelps Lane, North Babylon. This eight-hour course will be taught over two consecutive Saturdays, April 14th and April 21st from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., four hours per Saturday. An additional ABC course will begin Monday, May 7th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for 5 successive Mondays ending Monday June 11th The cost of course materials is $50. the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make

along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

classes at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently completed a project, “Eye Can Show What Eye Know.” The students finished the plant and animal structure unit in science and created a 3-D model of the eye. They represented each part of the eye and wrote about and explained its function. The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. At this festival, you can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try your hand at fishing for trout, and the kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and local fishing clubs will also set up information displays. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. As the supply of loaner rods is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling”

casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by the DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win some great prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program and The Natural Heritage Trust. Governor Cuomo has expanded recreational opportunities of residents and tourists, positioning New York State as a recreation destination, connecting communities to state lands, and improving the quality of life. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for

fishing, and increasing hunting opportunities in the state. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails, and parking areas. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid NYS freshwater fishing license to legally fish. The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 1,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout

by DEC. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. To further encourage fishing, Governor Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics, allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time by enabling DEC to increase the number of free clinics that can be held throughout the state. Town of Babylon Celebrates

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Department of Human Services Commissioner Madeline QuintyneMcConney recently hosted the Town’s 30th Annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School. This year’s event was titled “African Americans in Times of War,” and featured a variety of performances as well as local honorees. Also in attendance were Town Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilmembers Jackie Gordon, Anthony Manetta and Terry McSweeney, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne

Gregory, Legislator Tom Donnelly and several other representatives. Averi Harper, a News 12 reporter and the host of “Diverse Long Island,” a magazine show focused on minority issues, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event. Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, the President of SUNY College at Old Westbury, delivered the keynote address for the event. The event honored 30 veterans from Long Island for their services in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. Each veteran answered the call to action and put his or her life on the line overseas. In addition to these veterans,

three others who were killed in action were also recognized. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Wyandanch Memorial Post 361 and Martin A. Kessler Post 2912, as well as Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post 1218 were honored for their commitment to serving veterans in the Babylon community. The invocation was delivered by First Sergeant Charles Chaney Sr., a retiree of the United States Army and current member of the Department of Defense. Chaney, a graduate of Amityville High School, was ordained in 1992.

Revitalization Event

On Monday, March 12th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey attended a Lindenhurst Village downtown revitalization event with Lindenhurst Village officials, including Mayor Mike Lavorata, Deputy Mayor Maryanne Weckerle and trustees Joan Masterson and RJ Renna. The event was held to showcase various revitalization initiatives and grants being used to make Lindenhurst’s downtown more viable for business and to grow the tax base. Also at the meeting were representatives of government, the community, business and advocacy, including representatives of Senators Boyle and Brooks and Assemblywoman Kimberley Jean-Pierre. Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce President JoAnn Boettcher and Vision

Long Island Director Eric Alexander also attended and spoke. “I am proud to have been a part of the Lindenhurst revitalization efforts as a member of the Village Board and to be continuing my work as a Legislator,” said McCaffrey. “The $200,000 grant we secured for a walkability study and these other efforts are the building blocks of big things happening here in the village.” Also speaking at the event were owners of new businesses coming into Lindenhurst. One person is in the process of opening Long Island’s first Meadery, which is where wine is made from honey. Meade is one of the newest trends in the craft alcohol industry. Three restaurants were referenced at the event also, which will feature American Cuisine and organic food. A new

catering hall is being brought into the village by someone who was a part of revitalization efforts in Harlem and is now bringing that experience and expertise to Lindenhurst. “The walkability of Lindenhurst is about to get a significant upgrade, which will further the family friendly and accessible community we are working to build here in Lindenhurst,” said McCaffrey. “The pride and vision of many people in the Village are what is driving this initiative forward at its current force and pace.” Most of the restaurants and businesses are slated to open in Lindenhurst in 2018. The walkability study happening as a result of the $200,000 Suffolk County grant is also designated to be finished this year.

Lindenhurst Village Board Trustee Darrel Kost recently announced he will be retiring from the Lindenhurst Village Board at the end of his term. During the March

6th Village Board meeting, Mayor Michael Lavorata personally thanked Darrel for his dedicated service to the people of the Village of Lindenhurst and
