Town Of Babylon Officials Launch Drive To Support Ukraine
Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilmen Terence McSweeney and DuWayne Gregory recently joined together with leadership and congregants at the Holy Family Ukrainian Church for a prayer service in support of the people of Ukraine. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly and Knights of Columbus Chancellor Patrick Corcoran were also in attendance. At the service, Supervisor Schaffer announced that the Town of Babylon has launched a drive to collect monetary donations that will go toward supporting
Ukrainian refugees who are fleeing the Russian invasion. The drive is being coordinated through the Industrial Development Agency with the goal of raising $25,000. “The Town of Babylon is home to one of the largest Ukrainian populations on Long Island, and we will do everything we can to stand with the people of Ukraine, and with our friends and neighbors here at home who still have family and friends over there,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “The Babylon community always comes together in times of crisis and I know this will be no different,” added Supervisor Schaffer.
All proceeds collected through the drive will be donated to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lindenhurst, which will work to disseminate the funds through charitable organizations where refugees are resettling. Supervisor Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board hope to reach the $25,000 goal by early April. In person donations can be made directly to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church at 225. The official beginning of spring is a highly anticipated day among people who can’t wait to put away their winter coats and soak up some warm sunlight, but the day of the spring equinox is just as worthy of celebration for its uniqueness as it is for its symbolic connection with the end of winter. As the sun passes overhead on the equinox, the tilt of Earth is zero relative to the sun. That means that the planet’s axis

Though it’s understandable why so many people appreciate the spring equinox, which ushers in increasing sunlight hours and later sunsets, the day’s uniqueness makes it even more worthy of celebration. This year the spring equinox happens on 11:33 AM on Sunday, March 20 in the northern hemisphere.

Recently, volunteers from the Lindenhurst community met at the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church, located at 225 North 4th Street in Lindenhurst, to help
sort and pack items that were donated by local residents. The items that were collected will be sent to designated eastern European countries to assist with the ongoing
humanitarian efforts for Ukrainian refugees in need. The Village’s Department of Public Works was on hand to assist with the organizing of donations and cleanup.
A Day Of Solidarity For Ukraine On Anthem Corner
The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Knights of Columbus Council #794 co-chaired a Day of Solidarity for Ukraine, and formally kicked off “March for Ukraine” with Suffolk County Legislator and Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey’s office. “March for Ukraine” is a program and commitment to collect donations at McCaffrey’s office to donate to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church for transport to Poland and Ukraine. Father Olvian Popovici has taken on a huge role in supporting Ukraine and managing these efforts alongside his parishioners. “We are so touched
by the generosity of the Lindenhurst community in response to a call for support for Ukraine,” said Grand Knight Stephen Strigaro. “It is with great resolve we work alongside our Brother Knights in Poland and Ukraine to get them with much needed supplies for relief efforts across the country.” March for Ukraine will continue for this month, along with a fundraiser on April 23, 2022 at Tennessee Jeds in Lindenhurst from 3:007:00pm with Mayor Mike Lavorata as the Honorary Chairman. “Today’s event is another demonstration of cooperation between
the businesses, local and federal government, the civic associations, the church, and the loyal patrons,” said Chancellor, Patrick Corcoran. “It was a honor to be alongside Monsignor Joe, Father Popovici, Andrew, Rich, Mike, and Kevin in sharing our joint initiatives to support, with Belfast Owners and Brother Knights Dave Crowe and Bobby Fortier, donating $10,000.00 onsite during the event!” Donations are accepted at Kevin McCaffrey’s office at 125C South Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst, Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 5:00pm.
Lindenhurst Recognizes David Crowe Located at 101 North Wellwood Avenue, the Belfast Gastropub opened its doors last year, bringing Irish food, drink, music and tradition to the Village Downtown. Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I am so grateful to David Crowe and the rest of the Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade Committee – RJ Renna, Kevin McCaffrey, and Katie Schrader – for organizing this fun, family event,
celebrating Irish heritage, and the Patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, in the Village of Lindenhurst.” The Lindenhurst St. Patrick’s Parade will step off at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, March 26th, from Fireman’s Park, traveling west on Hartford Street, turning south on Wellwood Avenue, and proceeding to the Middle School. Students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District celebrated national Read Across America on March 2 in myriad ways. The day honors the birthday of the late Dr. Seuss, author of many famous children’s books including “Horton Hears A Who,” “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and “There’s a Wocket in My Pocket.” Lindenhurst High School Student Council members recently organized an virtual event in which the high school student-volunteers gathered in their school library throughout the day and used Chromebooks to
read virtually to the district’s elementary school students. At Lindenhurst Middle School, many teachers and administrators served as guest readers and acted out various stories, essays and poems throughout the day for students. A variety of Dr. Seuss books were read, along with other selections. First grade students in Lisa Cognato and Evelyn Portillo’s dual-language English Spanish class at Albany Avenue Elementary School spent the day working on Dr. Seussthemed activities in both languages to strengthen their skills.

YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of five communities and school districts
Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.
(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20.

Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Have Your Furry Friends Tested Annually The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.
11th Annual All Kids Fair Is Back At A New Exciting Venue The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. wonderful event for families. Benefits Of Leisure Activities Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia.
