by Zoom or at the YES Community Counseling Center office. The mission of the BRIDGES program is to engage, support and empower young adults and their families, identify needs, overcome barriers to get help and mobilize community recovery support services.
The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.
The BRIDGES program also includes on site recovery support groups, drop-in hours and wellness/self-care workshops and it provides prevention programs and self-care workshops to staff, students and young adults at high schools, colleges and other organizations.

Going For The Gold In Lindenhurst The 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, China have not only inspired patriotism among students in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District but also academic creativity and scientific curiosity. Second grade students at West Gates Avenue Elementary School in Shaina Fischer’s class recently took part in their own showdown in various Winter Olympicsthemed academic activities and traditions. While
they weren’t skiing or ice skating, the young competitors dressed in different team colors and split into separate groups. They went for the gold in a variety of events, such as coin curling, steal the science, fast fact track, history hoops and reading relay. In addition to demonstrating their academic knowledge, the lessons were intended to strengthen their cooperative learning skills, reinforcing the importance
of working together to succeed. The fifth grade students of Valerie Dietrich and Jen Villardi’s class at William Rall Elementary School got creative in a different way. Those students used their researching skills to create group Google Slide presentations in which they explored their favorite Olympic events in greater depth following a set criteria.

Lindenhurst High School symphonic band, under the direction of teacher Kevin Pike, recently took part in a virtual clinic led by Staff Sgt. Tyler Hsieh, clarinetist in “The President’s Own” Marine Band. Throughout the interactive session, Hsieh explored various practicing
techniques to assist the students’ performances and help them to avoid boredom while practicing. He emphasized the importance of setting goals and mastering the fundamentals of the instrument by performing scales, practicing long tones and articulation exercises.
Additionally, he shared with the students some of his personal experience performing with the “President’s Own,” America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization, including his performance during the presidential inauguration of 2020.

How To Contribute To The Red Cross
Every March, the American Red Cross honors and celebrates the everyday heroes who help fulfill our humanitarian mission during Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross help communities in their own countries and across the globe every day. The Red Cross is perhaps most visible in the aftermath of natural disasters. However, the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross are active year-round, and there are plenty of ways for individuals to contribute to both organizations throughout the year. • Receive training from the Red Cross. The Red Cross notes that many professions require individuals to master lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid. But millions of people are not required to learn such skills, even though they’re useful for anyone. The Red Cross offers an array of courses, including lifeguarding, caregiving and babysitting, swimming and water safety, that train individuals about how to effectively prepare to respond to emergencies.
Enrolling in these courses contributes to the mission of the Red Cross by building its potential base of qualified volunteers who can pitch in when natural disasters or other emergencies occur. • Donate blood. Blood donations are uniquely valuable to the Red Cross at any time, but the organization noted in early 2022 that it was experiencing its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. The Red Cross notes that the pandemic contributed to a 62 percent decline in college and high school blood drives. So while student donors made up roughly 25 percent of all donors in 2019, they now make up just 10 percent of the donor population. Eligible adults, including students, can contribute to the Red Cross by donating as often as possible. Students back on campus can work with school officials and local Red Cross chapters to organize blood drives in their school communities. • Pitch in with disaster relief. The American Red Cross notes that it responds to an emergency every eight minutes.
Perhaps most remarkable is that 95 percent of the organization’s disaster relief workers are volunteers. The American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross rely on volunteers from all walks of life, and each organization has plenty of opportunities for individuals willing to give back. The Red Cross provides emergency financial assistance in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, but also offers such aid to households that need extra help in the long-term. Individuals who want to assist the American Red Cross and Canadian Red Cross help those in need can do so in myriad ways.

The South Shore Audubon Society is beginning now to accept applications for a $1000 award, the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship 2022. College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or

Furthermore, on average… 1.17 jobs were created for every 1000 tons of recycled materials. Rising above the rest by comparison, with 270 employees, HELPSY is the largest clothing collection
company on the East Coast and collects 15,000 tons of textiles every year… amounting to 18 jobs for every 1000 tons. “HELPSY’s environmental mission is to radically change the way people think about clothing reuse and recycling. In the process of serving this mission, it has created hundreds of living wage jobs, saved municipalities millions of dollars in disposal fees, and has reduced the enormous environmental burden of the second most polluting industry in the world,” says Dan Green, Co-Founder and CEO of HELPSY. Over the past year, HELPSY has worked with
113 municipal recycling departments and collected approximately 1.7 million pounds of textiles from those collaborations. Through a combination of clothing drives, home pick-ups, thrift store partners and clothing receptacles located in 10 states, HELPSY diverts nearly 30 million pounds of textiles from landfills every year. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.
Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.

In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table.
Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York.
Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-efficient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state. It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.
