Rall Students Spelling Success First through third grade students as well as fourth and fifth graders at William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District recently competed in the school’s annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students, who were placed in the two grade level groupings, qualified to participate in the school-

level bee after winning their class bees. This year’s events were recorded allowing Rall families the opportunity to watch their children participate in the annual spelling contest. The students took on many complicated words with confidence. After several rounds with their respective age groups,

only two contestants remained. The school-level winners were – third grader Ava Facilla who correctly spelled “dependable” and fifth grader Katelyn Rynn who correctly spelled “Darwinism.” The runnersup for each grade range were siblings fifth grader Amelia Stankiewicz and second grader Thomas Stankiewicz.

The Long Island Pet Expo Is Back!

The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break. The number of pet licenses

in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.” The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Dogs on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Diana Frohman and her beautiful Dancing Dogs. Schutzhund Demonstration by Maximum K9 Service , the Dog Lovers Days Lure Course, Johnny Peers Muttville Mix, Doggie U K9 Academy Rainforest Reptiles, TICA

Championship Cat Shows and more. “We always have fun at these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. “We partner with several community organizations, shelters, veterinarians and other animal lovers educate and inform when it comes to best practices for training, feeding and all aspects of pet care.” Community and rescue organizations participating in the show include Tylers Rescue, Chippy’s Angels to the Rescue, Haven Animal Foundation, Last Chance Animal Rescue, Pet Partners, LI Golden Retriever Rescue, and more The event is expected to draw over 10,000 attendees over the weekend. Admission is Adults $15, Kids 3-11 are $6, and those under three years old are always free. Saturday March 5th the hours are 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sunday, March 6th, from 10 am to 5pm. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. Rotary Interact Club For Young Adults The Lindenhurst Interact Club is a service group for youth, and is part of the Lindenhurst Rotary Club. It is open to students between the ages of 12 and 18. The students meet on the first and third Monday of each month during the school year. They hold fundraisers for local, national, and international projects. This year, the

Interact Club purchased a “Buddy Bench” for Village Park and conducted food drives for local families in need. They also made donations to Lightup Lindy, Lindenhurst Rotary’s Dictionary Project, Kentucky tornado victims, Dove Youth Development Project, and Becky’s Beds for the homeless. Their advisors,

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the origin of Presidents’ Day lies in the 1880’s, when the birthday of George Washington was first celebrated as a federal holiday. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill, which moved a number of federal holidays to Mondays. In the bill, it was proposed that Washington’s Birthday be renamed Presidents’ Day to honor the birthdays of both Washington (February 22) and Lincoln (February 12); although Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated in many states, it was never an official federal holiday. Following much discussion, Congress rejected the name change. After the bill went into effect in 1971, Presidents’ Day became the commonly accepted name, and is usually marked by public ceremonies in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country.
