Legislator Tom Donnelly Urges Residents Turning 65 To Apply for Property Tax Exemption Deadline Is March 1 Regardless Of Birthday

If you were born in 1959 and turning 65 this year, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) would like to wish you a happy birthday and remind you to file your property tax exemption forms before March 1, regardless of your month and date of birth. This 65th birthday milestone entitles eligible seniors to important benefits including the Enhanced STAR tax reduction and the Senior Citizens Property Tax Exemption. Depending on total income, the reduction could be significant. The adjusted gross income threshold for Enhanced STAR is $98,700 (for 2022) and the income threshold for the Senior Citizens

Property Tax Exemption is $58,400 gross (for 2022). If you qualify, the two applications must be filed with your own Town Assessor on or before March 1 of the year you turn 65. Under New York State law, if you turn 65 after March 1 and wait until your birthday to file you will lose the next year’s exemption. In addition, if you were born prior to 1959 and think you are entitled to but not yet receiving STAR benefits, you also must apply before the March 1st deadline. The Enhanced STAR form is RP-425-E and RP-425-IVP; the Senior Citizens Property Tax Exemption form is RP-467. Applications are available online at:

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and

currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was

available. But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sitdown dining. The Kitchen relies heavily

on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and offsite volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also

openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen

Whether you’re hosting at home or going to a game watch at a fellow fan’s house, keep in mind that food and football are a great match. Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. As this year’s playoffs kick off, football fans can try this recipe for “Loaded Beef Nachos” courtesy of AllRecipes.com.

Loaded Beef Nachos Serves 4

Taco Seasoning: 5 teaspoons paprika 1 1⁄4

teaspoons garlic powder

1 1⁄4

teaspoons ground cumin

1 1⁄4

teaspoons onion powder

1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon oregano leaves 1 1⁄2

teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced green bell pepper 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed

and salt together in a small bowl; set aside.

until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more. Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexican-style corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared taco seasoning mix. Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes. To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese. Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer. Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.

Legislator Donnelly: Suffolk County Offers Employment Programs For Residents Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) would like to inform residents about the Suffolk County’s special employment-readiness programs to assist those seeking a job or a new career. According to Legislator Donnelly, the Suffolk County Department of Labor has a mulitude of resources to assist residents in their job searches through its One-Stop Employment Center. Among the innovative and award-winning services available are Job Fairs, held at convenient locations throughout the County, and Suffolk County's OneStop Employment Center in Hauppauge which offers workshops, job placement assistance, resume preparation and career counseling. For more information on upcoming Job Fairs or any of these
