While 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented through modest changes to diet and lifestyle, disparities in care for women’s heart and brain health continue to exist. In addition, heart disease and stroke symptoms can present differently in women compared to men. Women also make up less than half of all clinical trial participants globally, with women of color only accounting for three percent. As a result, more research is needed to close gender disparity gaps when

it comes to cardiovascular research, treatment and care. The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! What to expect in a 10-week curriculum: Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.

Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends. All coaches are trained to teach as intended, while building relationships with and between girls, creating a positive, inclusive environment and supporting individual improvement. A host of local officials turned out for the Christina Renna Foundation’s Annual Angel’s Wish Gala. Attending was Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata, Deputy Mayor Maryann Weckerle, Trustee Pat Pichichero, Trustee RJ Renna, along with his parents, Phil and Rene Renna, founders of the foundation, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, and Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand. The local officials were there to support the Christina Renna Foundation’s efforts to raise money for their mission to fight childhood cancer. Mayor Lavorata said, “It is important to pause to remember Christina Renna, and all those children who have lost their lives to this horrible disease. May tonight bring hope to those who continue to fight and work towards finding a cure.”

While you and your family are most likely prepared for the winter with warm clothing and shovels, what about your pets? Here’s how you can help your furry family members brave the cold and be safe all winter. Keep your pet warm. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, pets with thick or long hair tend to be more tolerant towards cold weather. If you bring your long-haired pup to the groomer during the winter, consider a simple trim rather than shaving their hair. Short-haired dogs on the other hand get cold fast due to their lack of fur to

insulate their body. Head out to your local pet store to buy a sweater or coat to help them stay warm. Protect their paws from de-icing chemicals. Salt and other de-icing chemicals can be harmful to your pet. Prior letting your dog or cat outside consider massaging petroleum jelly or pawprotectant on their paw pads to help prevent any redness and irritation, as recommended by the ASPCA. Winter boots made for pets are also a great alternative. Limit their time outdoors. The American Kennel Club says that like humans, both dogs and cats are susceptible to frostbite, especially on their earflaps and tails. Limit their play time outside during cold

weather spurts. Emergency preparedness for your pets. Power outages are common during winter-related disasters and can be a threat to you and your pet if the weather becomes severe, says AVMA. Create an emergency kit for your pet in the event of a winter storm or disaster that can lead to a power outage. The emergency kit should include seven days’ worth of water and food per pet, paper towels, waste baggies, blankets, toys and a flashlight with extra batteries. Cold temperatures can impose health risks to your furry friends but taking some precautions can help make winter more enjoyable for you and your pet!

On Jan. 17 and 18, the Lindenhurst High School Thespian Troupe performed its winter musical with a production of “Once Upon a Mattress” under the direction of Lindenhurst High School alumna, Rita Sarli. The musical comedy, based on Hans Christian Andersen’ fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea,” opened off Broadway in 1959, and then moved to Broadway where Carol Burnett originated the role of Princess Winnifred. Lindenhurst High School student Katrina Robinson portrays the Minstrel who tells the story

of young prince Dauntless (Ryan Rodriguez), a man who seeks a bride and his difficult mother Queen Aggravain (Sophia Raimondi) who continues to get in the way by creating seemingly impossible challenges for any princess up to the task. She believes that only a true princess will pass the test and prove to be enough for her son. When Princess Winnifred (Isabel Camacho) shows up, Dauntless falls in love and she is given a sensitivity challenge to prove her worth. When the princess passes the test, the queen furiously orders her away, but Dauntless

Inspiration can take many forms. But for Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior Kiran Ahmad, inspiration came from a combination of a book and a teacher who taught her a deeper love for reading. Admittedly, Ahmad said English isn’t one of her favorite subjects, nor does she have an affinity for reading. That was until she was placed in Mr. Miles’ English class this year. The class recently read J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye” and somehow, she just made a connection. “Mr. Miles is very enthusiastic about the book, which kind

of made me enthusiastic about reading it,” she said. “And when we started to analyze the book, it really got me thinking about some of the characters.” It got Ahmad thinking so much so that she decided to travel to Princeton University’s library, on her own, to read some of Salinger’s unpublished works, most notably:” The Ocean Full of Bowling Balls,” the prequel to “Catcher in the Rye.” The short story explains why the book’s main character is the way he is, and since the story won’t be published until 2060, Ahmad wanted to share

what she learned with her teacher. “I started writing an email full of all the details to Mr. Miles immediately after I left the library,” she said. “I wanted to retain everything I could about the story.” The purpose of her journey to Princeton was to share her knowledge with the teacher who inspired her. “Mr. Miles is an inspiration and he always tells me that I inspire him,” she said. “I never even liked to read and he made me fall in love with books. And when he replied to my email about my trip, it just made my day.”

LESSONS IN HISTORY FROM DR. KING - Using technology, third graders at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District engaged in lessons about Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 16. Students in Ms. Spadaro’s class used the nearpod.com website to take an interactive, virtual tour of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and viewed virtual protests around the world. On Jan. 17, students at Daniel Street Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District took part Career Day. During the half-day event parent-volunteers visited classrooms in all grade levels and shared with students the elements of their respective careers. An emphasis was placed on careers reflecting the relevance of science,

technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics in everyday life. “Our Career Day provided a valuable opportunity to introduce our students to STEAM careers,” said Assistant Principal Catherine Glaser who organized the event. “We hope to inspire our children to strive for these possible futures as well as open them

TESTING LIMITS OF FORCE - Third graders in Jeannie Mullins’ class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned just how much force it takes to make a watermelon explode during a hands-on science experiment on Jan. 16. The students began the lesson on forces using rubber bands around their hands to feel the push and pull of force. Using a watermelon, the students placed rubber bands around the center and made a prediction about how many rubber bands it would take to make the watermelon explode. Working in pairs with groups of 10 rubber bands, the students – wearing their goggles – learned the answer to their experiment: 200 rubber bands equals one exploding watermelon. LINDENHURST, NY – Due to work being done to replace the building’s original HVAC system, the office of the Town of Babylon Department of Planning and Development located at Town Hall on Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst, including the Building Division, will be temporarily relocated to the Town Hall Annex, located at 281 Phelps Lane in North Babylon, starting February 3rd. This work is part of an extensive project to replace a 62-year old heating and ventilation system that has not been updated since the opening of Town Hall in 1958. “As the Planning Department is one of the most utilized departments in the town and one that handles a broad array of items, we recognize how important it is that the department’s services remain easily available and uninterrupted for those that need them,” said Town of

Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, who is overseeing the renovation project. “The town has made efforts to mitigate any potential inconvenience this may cause and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our residents as we work to improve our facility for all who utilize it.” While the move to the temporary location will not be complete until February 3rd, the department will be in the process of the transition starting January 27th. Residents in need of the department’s services from January 27th until the relocation is complete are asked to contact the town with information regarding the property or matter that they are interested in order to better serve them during the transition and temporary relocation. We Never Really Get The Answer To The Question, WHY?

Remember when you were younger and in school and the teacher made you answer the questions?

Who? What? Where? When? How? And WHY?

When someone we love discovers they have cancer, dies suddenly, or is killed in an auto accident, we never really get the answer to the question WHY? Of course, we can answer the question Who? Our mother, father, spouse, sibling, child, relative or friend. What? Death or terminal illness that will lead to death. When? Is answered by a date and time. How? Is answered by the medical examiner or doctor telling us the heart, brain or lungs stopped functioning. Buy Why? Why now? Why not me? WHY? WHY? WHY? This question cannot be adequately answered because there aren’t any answers that will satisfy us. People torture themselves trying to get to the answer. Why at that exact moment did a single cell in their body decide to multiply uncontrollably? Why at that exact moment did the coronary artery decide to block? Why at the moment did the cerebral artery decide to burst? Why at that exact moment was he on the road when the truck crossed over into his lane? WHY? WHY? WHY? After all I have seen and all I have heard, I have come to the conclusion there isn’t ever going to be a satisfactory answer to the question Why? I am also convinced that the answer to the questions of WHY do exist, just not on this earth. When we rejoin our loved ones, and the questions of Why can be answered, the answers will no longer matter to us.
