Eight Copiague students qualified for the New York State competition by placing in the top 10 in their respective events. “Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan
mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”
The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game. I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

The Ever Present Absence
When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. But, during special events such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. we are intensely aware of their absence to the point the entire event can be saddened because of our grief. But, as time goes on we learn to cope with and accept our loss. However, the absence of our loved one remains with us forever. It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are still conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. But as we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, or sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here,” acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives, not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in that moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives. 337650N0124
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one, I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when the day is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. Over the past couple of seasons our league has moved our intramural program for Juniors & Seniors into an interleague program. We have gotten a lot of positive feedback and we are excited to extend this progam to our Minors and Majors Division. Since the 2015 baseball season our Minors and Majors have been participating in both 2016 in-house games and interleague games. The interleague games will be with Copiague and Amityville. Most games will still be played at Kienle Field and some games scheduled at a local field.

(Kyara Dunleavy) to go up against Ariel’s influential father Rev. Shaw Moore (Kevin Dyson) and the city council to get the law overturned. The school’s orchestra, led by director Kevin Pike, along with musical director, Charles
Pramneiks, performed familiar tunes such as “Footloose,” “Let’s Hear it for the Boy” and “Almost Paradise” with great talent while the stage and lighting crews set the stage for wonderful performances and choreography.

College & Career Day Helping to guide students in their future goals, Copiague School District held a College and Career Day on January 12th. Administrators and staff dressed in attire featuring their alma maters to show the many different college options. At the district’s elementary schools, students dressed in their aspirational professional career paths. Future doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, artists and even astronauts filled the hallways and classrooms. Students
wrote about why they want to choose their career paths and shared their choices with classmates. At Great Neck Road Elementary School, fourth-graders listened to college students who spoke about their experiences. Secondgrade students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School became geologists for the day, mining for rocks and minerals and learning about their properties. Teachers spoke to Copiague Middle School students about their college experiences and students took surveys about
potential career paths based on their interests. Students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School listened to Copiague alumni speak about college living, the application process and navigating their way through the first year away from home. In addition, staff members participated in a Dollars for Denim Day, donating the money raised to the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Scholarship Fund sponsored by the Copiague Teachers Association.
