Kevin J. McCaffrey Becomes Presiding Officer Of The Suffolk County Legislature On the morning of Monday, January 3rd, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin J. McCaffrey was unanimously selected by his peers to serve as the next Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature. Every two years, the Suffolk County Legislature calls to order an Organizational Meeting on the first business day following New Year’s Day. At this meeting, new Legislators will be sworn into office for the first time, new Legislative employees will assume their roles, and the Legislators will cast votes for who will lead them as Presiding Officer and Deputy Presiding Officer. At this year’s meeting, Legislator McCaffrey was sworn into office for a fifth consecutive term representing the Fourteenth Legislative District, which encompasses the Village of Lindenhurst, Village of Babylon, the hamlets of West Babylon and North Lindenhurst, portions of Copiague, North Babylon and Babylon’s barrier beach communities. Additionally, Legislator McCaffrey was chosen unanimously by his fellow lawmakers to serve
Presiding Officer Kevin J. McCaffrey, administered a ceremonial Oath of Office. As Presiding Officer, Legislator McCaffrey will be tasked with serving as chairman of all meetings of the County Legislature, as the establishment of standing and special Legislative committees and appointment of their members calling special meetings of the County Legislature to discuss time sensitive County matters, and many more responsibilities as outlines in the Rules of the Legislature. This year, there are several new faces to the
Legislature, including Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, Legislator Manny Esteban, Legislator Trish Bergin, and Legislator Dominick Thorne. These freshman Legislators account for four of the eleven Republican seats on the Legislature, and as a result the Suffolk County Legislature’s Republican Caucus became the majority party for the first time in 16 years. The seven returning Legislators include Legislator Jim Mazzarella, Legislator Nick Caracappa, Legislator Anthony Piccirillo, Legislator Steve Flotteron, Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Legislator Rob Trotta, and Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. McCaffrey described the Republican Majority as “Not your grandfathers Republican Party,” including that the caucus is largely made up of organized labor leaders, female lawmakers, and a Hispanic. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was also on hand for the ceremony, and shared his connections to the Village of Lindenhurst and its surrounding area, both through family and through elected office. The Lindenhurst Economic Development Committee (LEDC) has put out a survey regarding the Downtown Business District (Wellwood and Hoffman Avenues). This is a followup to the survey done in 2015 by the LEDC. The goal is to collect a wide range of information regarding
the improvements to the downtown, as well as any additional suggestions that residents, property owners, merchants, and consumers may have about economic activity in the Lindenhurst community. The survey can be found on the Village’s website, villageoflindenhurstny.gov,

It’s a new musical featuring a score of popular songs written and made famous by female artists and female-fronted bands including Blondie, Pat Benatar, Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, P!nk, Gwen Stefani, and more! 16-year-old Angela Quivers is a perfectionist who never takes chances and feels like there’s no place where she belongs … until she meets Proxi, a teenager who pulls her into a world of grungy guitars, shocking secrets, and big, loud, messy emotions. Lindenhurst Adopts 2022-2023 Village Budget On January 4th, the Lindenhurst Village Board approved a budget for 2022-2023 of $15,781,675.00. This is a 1.8% increase from last year’s budget. The Village Board, along with the Village Treasurer and Administration, worked hard to create a budget that remained under the tax cap. This was made possible, in part, due to an increase in the Village’s overall assessed value, and the implementation of green, energy-efficient improvements, which have helped keep the cost of various utility bills down. The increase in Village taxes was mostly due to increases in areas that the Village cannot control, such as labor costs (increase in minimum wage), cost of health insurance benefits,
and rising insurance premiums. The budget keeps the Village of Lindenhurst in its current state of financial good standing, and positions the Village for future financial stability. Mayor Michael Lavorata said, “I remain impressed with how the Village staff, Department of Public Works, and the Fire Department have worked together to continue to meet the needs of our residents and businesses, without interruption, during the pandemic in the most efficient, costeffective way possible. The state of our Village finances is strong, and we are committed to making lasting, and meaningful, investments to move our Lindenhurst Community forward in a positive direction.” This year’s budgeting
has been a unique and challenging venture due to COVID-19. The 2022-2023 budget was created in a way to continue to provide essential services to our residents and businesses, while dealing with future financial uncertainties caused by inflation. Through strong fiscal management in past years, the Village Board was able to approve a budget that results in a minimal tax increase to residents. “Uncertainty about inflation and fuel prices, coupled with sharp spikes in building supply prices made the budget process a challenge,” Mayor Lavorata added. “We estimated a modest increase based on the raw materials that have gone up. The fact that we kept it under the tax cap with that in mind is pretty stupendous in my book.”
