Kassidy Rieder Finally Receives Well Deserved Honor
Kassidy Rieder, a 2020 graduate of Lindenhurst High School and Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Performing Arts, was honored Wednesday at the Lindenhurst Village Green Gazebo by Susan Bergtram, the Nassau BOCES Board President, for her devotion and support of public education. Kassidy was nominated and awarded the 2020 Nassau BOCES Education Award. The award is given annually to individuals and organizations whose extraordinary actions contribute to accomplishing the education goals of Nassau BOCES by ensuring students of all ages and abilities reach their highest potential. During her three years at the performing arts school Kassidy was a standout and received many honors and invitations to perform at prestigious events and ceremonies allowing her to showcase her talents. She sang the National Anthem at the 2009 9/11 Memorial Ceremony, a solo at the Tony Bennet Exploring the Arts Gallery, and was a soloist at the dedication ceremony of the
Rosalind Joel Conservatory for Music and Theatre, performing for honored guest and benefactor, Billy Joel. Legislator Kevin McCaffrey said, “Kassidy has always dedicated herself to great causes. It is nice to see Nassau BOCES and the Long Island High School for the Performing Arts recognize her for her talent, positive energy, awareness and connection to the community. She has a very bright future and we, as a community, are very proud of her.” Kassidy has been a
mentor, a role model, and a tremendous positive influence to other students. Kassidy was presented the award nearly nine months after the ceremony was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Kassidy received the award in the company of Susan Bergtram from BOCES, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Lindenhurst Village Trustee Joan Masterson, Lindenhurst Superintendent Dan Giordano, and her family.
Legislator Kevin McCaffrey Selected To Be GOP Minority Leader For 2021 Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently announced that he has been selected by the Republican caucus to be GOP Minority Leader for 2021. The announcement comes after Legislator Tom Cilmi, who has held the title for the last three years, declined to seek the leadership position for a fourth year. Cilmi, who is term-limited out of office at the end of this year, said “It has been a privilege leading my Republican colleagues for the last three years. Synthesizing a variety of perspectives and finding consensus is not always easy, but I look back proudly on what we’ve been able to accomplish. We were able to put the brakes on borrowing, reducing the debt burden on our taxpayers by tens of millions of dollars. We were able to successfully address a multitude of district-specific concerns for our members. We influenced legislation put forth by our Democrat colleagues, perhaps none more remarkable than recent changes to Article 6, which ultimately passed unanimously. We passed Republican-sponsored bills that were important to our caucus. Finally, we raised tens of thousands of dollars to help Republicans, including freshman Legislator Anthony Piccirillo, get elected. “Equally as important to me is the manner in which we conducted our work, opting for productive compromise and collaborative give and take as opposed to the combative, antagonistic approach which characterizes so much of today’s politics. All that being said, I want to devote my last year in office to serving the residents in my district. At the same time, it’s important that my staff has an opportunity to help transition all the leadership responsibilities to others. I have every confidence in Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and I and my staff look forward

Guardians of Rescue Finds Dog Struggling to Walk, Creates Medical Fund to Help Save Him
RIEDER RECEIVES WELL DESERVED HONOR - Lindenhurst HS graduate, Kassidy Rieder was presented the 2020 Nassau BOCES Education Award by Nassau BOCES Board President Susan Bergtram on Wednesday January 6th at the Gazebo on the Village Green in Lindenhurst. She received the award for her dedication and positive impact on public education in 2020 at the gazebo with members of the Nassau BOCES Administration, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Lindenhurst Schools Superintendent Dan Giordano, Lindenhurst Village Trustee Joan Masterson and members of her family.
In a small town in Georgia, where they have no animal services available, a dog that has been named Bam Bam was found badly injured. He appeared to have been hit by a car and was left without medical care. Bam Bam sustained injuries that have left him paralyzed, but Guardians of Rescue have stepped up to take on the challenge of getting
him the medical assistance that he needs to walk once again. They are asking for people in the community to chip in to help make it happen. “This poor dog was basically left to die after what looks like being hit by a car,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “He
struggles to try and move even the slightest bit and it’s heartbreaking to watch. We know that we can help him, but to do so we need the help of compassionate people in the community.” Guardians of Rescue have started a medical fund where people can donate to help raise the money necessary to care for Bam

Helen Gallagher was born December 30, 1920 to Marion and Thomas Lenahan on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Her family, with 8 children, moved to Elmhurst and then to Jackson Heights. She graduated from Newtown High School in 1939 and started working for Horn and Hardart, famous for the Automat, and then for Bloomingdales, in the children’s department. She often told us of the
many famous New Yorkers, who shopped there for their children. Her marriage to Bill Rohrman in 1943, ended tragically in September of 1944, when he was killed at the battle of the Siegfried Line, in World War II. Helen married their friend, Bernie Gallagher, in 1950. They later moved to Jericho. Helen was a founding mother for the Confraternity program at Saint Paul the Apostle

She served as director of the program or 25 years, and was awarded the Saint Agnes Medal for service, by the Diocese of Rockville Centre in 1988. She had no children. Helen’s 24 nieces and nephews were treated as her children. She has been living at Dominican Village since 2006. Helen enjoys her life, her family, her friends, and her Irish heritage. She is everybody’s friend.

Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?
We enjoy having you there too.
The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.
However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia
Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every MondaySaturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and furniture. All proceeds from this store go directly to help Long Island residents in need. Lastly, if you have some free time on your hands and are comfortable volunteering at the store, please contact Debbie at 631.205.3458. During this pandemic, Angels of Long Island is short staffed and looking for help. Their store is cleaned every morning and masks are required there. Please only consider volunteering if you are not showing any covid symptoms. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing nonprofit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a storefront on Long Island and helps so many in need when I made that Facebook group years ago. What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.”

The funds will be put to use providing him with the necessary medical technology needed to help him walk again, as well as help him receive the medical care he needs to recover from his other injuries, and be adopted out. Bam Bam will need a specialist in order to be able to walk again. During the medical exam, the MRI showed that Bam Bam sustained nerve damage. Even with that, Guardians of Rescue is optimistic that with the right medical care the dog will be able to walk again. He will need costly treatment to help him
reach that point, but the signs are there that he will be able to recover with the right care. “Imagine how frightened Bam Bam must have been to be hit by a car and left with injuries that made him unable to move,” Misseri. “One look at this dog, at how brave and determined he is to move around, and it’s clear that we have to do everything we can to help him.” Guardians of Rescue appreciates all donations, no matter what size they may be. Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during
the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due
to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing
donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation
center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted
additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
