The Village also celebrated Joseph Randazzo, Lindenhurst’s only-surviving WWII Veteran, as the evening’s honoree to help drop the Lindenhurst New Year’s Eve Ball. Fourth and fifth grade students at William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District have recently been participating in ukulele lessons led by building music teacher

James Liepa. As part of the music unit now in its second year, students have been learning several key skills in playing the instrument such as posture, how to properly hold a ukulele, singular

notes and chords. Through the lessons students work progressively towards the goal of playing a song and accompanying their playing with singing.

OLPH KNIGHTS SUPPORT PARISHIONER - The Lindenhurst Knights supported a trip for LIU Post Student Sarah Ronessi. Sarah is a member of the Newman Club, an organization at secular schools for Catholics sponsored by the Diocese. Her trip is a retreat of all Clubs based across the US to focus on faith in action. The Village of Lindenhurst culminated their 100th Anniversary Year in the same way they kicked it off – with a New Year’s Eve Ball Drop! While last year’s event drew hundreds of residents, families, and visitors out

in the rain, the milder weather this year brought thousands to Village Square to celebrate 2023 and welcome 2024! Sponsored by the Village of Lindenhurst and the Lindenhurst Chamber of Commerce, the event

featured live music by The Good Life band, fun giveaways, dancing robots, the ball drop, and fireworks! The Village celebrated Joseph Randazzo, Lindenhurst’s onlysurviving WWII Veteran, as the evening’s honoree to

help drop the Lindenhurst New Year’s Eve Ball. Unable to attend at the last minute, Mr. Randazzo, who was just eighteen-years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Army through the Draft Board on June 6th, 1944 – D Day, and fought

in the Battle of the Bulge, was proudly represented by his daughter and extended family. The Lindenhurst New Year’s Eve Ball, designed and built by long-time Lindenhurst resident Floyd Chivvis, and his crew

at Chivvis Enterprises, Inc., was operated with the expert assistance of the Lindenhurst Fire Department. When the countdown ended, a spectacular Fireworks by Grucci show wowed the happy crowd!

By Barry Klitsberg, Nassau County Medicare Counselor, Family and Children’s Association (FCA) Medicare is a federally run health insurance program for people who are 65 years of age or have collected Social Security Disability for 24 months. It is also available for individuals with permanent kidney failure or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Each year Medicare gives participants the opportunity to modify their health care plan during Open Enrollment season, which runs from October 15th through December 7th. When January rolls around, there are always some Medicare beneficiaries who despite their best intentions neglected to switch plans during Open Enrollment or didn’t know about Open Enrollment. This generally means that beneficiaries will have to stay with their current enrollment for 2024. Exceptions to Open Enrollment Limits There are, however, exceptions to the Open Enrollment rule. Medicare beneficiaries who are in a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO) and didn’t change their plan by December 7 may switch Medicare Advantage plans between January 1 and March 31, 2024. Mayor Visits Albany Avenue Elementary School

Pictured here, Mayor Michael Lavorata recently took a trip to Albany Avenue Elementary School to speak to Third Grade students about being Mayor of the Village of Lindenhurst. Mayor Lavorata told the students about the duties of being Mayor, and the students had the opportunity to ask the Mayor questions. Mayor Lavorata said, “One of the best questions asked was ‘What do you do when you don’t

know something?’, and I replied that I seek counsel from those who have done it before. Learning from others, like County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, and Former Mayors Lynda Distler & Tom Brennan, has been an important and invaluable tool in doing my job as Mayor.” Additionally, West Gates Avenue Elementary and Lindenhurst Middle School students also recently

took trips to Village Hall where Mayor Lavorata and Deputy Mayor RJ Renna explained the various functions of government, answered questions, and gave the students a tour of Village Hall. “The Village is thankful for the partnership with the Lindenhurst School District in teaching our young people about civics,” added Deputy Mayor Renna.

Lindenhurst High School Student Is QuestBridge Scholar Lindenhurst High School Student Khrystyna Blyshchak has been named a QuestBridge Scholar and is receiving a full, four-year scholarship to Tufts University in Massachusetts. Khrystyna was one of more than 20,800 high school seniors nationwide who applied to QuestBridge during the 2022-2023 school year, and she is one of only 2,242 finalists who were ultimately recognized as Match Scholarship recipients this year. Students who received the scholarship had an average unweighted GPA of 3.92, and 86 percent are in the top ten percent of their graduating class. Khrystyna plans to study computer science at Tufts. “Khrystyna’s story is one that comprises hard work, overcoming adversity and becoming one of the highest academic achievers in her class,” said Lindenhurst High School Guidance Counselor Matthew Ward, noting that she did not speak English when her family emigrated from Ukraine to America. “She is truly a very bright, incredibly resourceful and well-rounded young person. This scholarship is well deserved.”
