Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge used the Peace Light during the Hebrew School’s lighting of the Chanukah Menorah during their holiday celebration on Thursday, December 14th. Additionally, it was shared in East Northport at Cub Scout Pack 5’s monthly Pack Night on December 9th and the Peace Light was shared at the Matinecock District’s monthly Scouting Roundtable meeting (held at John Glenn HS, Elwood) on Thursday, December 14th. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European

The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Friday, December 2nd. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, a Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help also attended the service. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed. In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns when it was also shared at St Joseph’s RC Church (Ronkonkoma) on Sunday, December 4th, at their Lessons and Carols. The Peace Light was used as part of the mass on Friday, December 8th (a holy feast day) which preceded our tree lighting ceremony that evening. Last week’s column was entitled Coming Out of the Cold; this week, Snowed In. Sensing a theme here? January has always been my least favorite month. Apologies to those with birthdays and other assorted milestones which fall within this 31 day period; but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, I find nothing particularly exciting about it. For those who love snow, sure, there’s the potential for a few substantial blizzards to blow our way. But mostly, it’s a month that begins with the daunting process of undecking the halls and ends with faint hopes of a furry critter crawling out of a hole to determine just how much more cold weather we’ve yet to endure until spring beckons. Of course, let’s not forget the seemingly endless parade of holiday bills piling

up in the mailbox as we speak, as the horrifying realization of just how much we spent the previous month begins to set in. Joyful. But, as with anything, January is something we must contend with, for better or worse. And so, we attempt to make the best of it by cooking up big pots of chili, baking cookies and settling in with our fuzzy slippers and pajamas as we once again pick up that book we’ve been meaning to finish since we started it back on the beach sometime in July. There are the movies we never got around to seeing in theaters that have since found their way to our cable channels, maybe a Netflix series or two to binge watch, even – dare we say it – some long overdue cleaning out of the closets. {But not the dreaded Christmas Closet. No, January is not a long enough

month for such a daunting task.} Thrilling? Perhaps not. But let’s face it – these are the activities we are all the more unlikely to touch as the year wears on, as the snowflakes melt away and reveal the beginning buds and blossoms we so look forward to come spring. And, if you do happen to revel in the cold, blustery weather, this is your time. Brave the elements, take a hike, build a snowman . . . the white stuff won’t last forever. Resolutions, abstract goals – whatever form your inspiration takes in 2018 – are best served by consistency, by constant reevaluation and modification, if needed. January is just as important a month as any to not lose sight of the bigger picture even if it is a bit clouded by the frosted windowpane at the moment.

event. While I was speaking with Pastor Jim Ryan, he mentioned the inspiration behind being mobile. He explained, “Jesus didn’t make others come to Him to be helped, He went to them…that is why we operate in a mobile manner!” Lighthouse Mission’s Youth Outreach operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students and, on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this service for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. Week after week, many youth on Long Island gather for these events and enjoy a wonderful time together; for many children, the meal they receive at an event will be their only meal of the day. There is an overwhelming amount of people on Long Island who are in need, not only physically, but emotionally as well. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that truly cares for those they serve. They operate 100% on donations, receiving no government help. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so! They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are specifically in need of winter coat donations. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. All ages are welcome to volunteer! Providing Hope Beyond the Food ... this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This organization was founded in 1992 by Sister Elaine when she received a vision from God to “Share the Gospel of Jesus and Feed the Poor.” From there, she humbly took to the streets of Long Island with 10 bologna and cheese sandwiches and did just that. Lighthouse Mission currently reaches 2,000 people per week with the same mission: sharing the Gospel of Jesus and feeding the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is now the president of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After recently meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved. I felt excitement for all they are doing and experienced such a renewed sense of hope. They are truly set apart from many other organizations because they purposefully accomplish much more than just feeding the hungry. Lighthouse Mission operates a Food Outreach as well as a Youth Outreach. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays (in Coram and Ronkonkoma), Wednesdays (in Central Islip), Thursdays (in Shirley and Port Jefferson Station), Fridays (in Riverhead and Centereach) and Saturdays (in Patchogue and Bellport). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, they chose to go mobile and travel to different locales where those in need can line up and receive plenty of nutritional food, gentlyused clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the

Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Center teaches students the required skills to enter our region’s high-skilled manufacturing workforce. Students in Suffolk’s programs learn an array of technologies including computerized machinery, computer software, 3D printers, and ability to design and develop products. A core course, Advanced Machining Processes, encourages students to

experiment to learn the content of the class. The final project is a “Chess Set Project.” Each student designs a chess set by utilizing a CAD/CAM design software package. After completion of the designs the students use computer programs that enable them to manufacture those pieces on the CNC machines, and manufactures his/her own pieces. Suffolk County Community College is committed to the advanced manufacturing

Tips To Help Alleviate Caregiving Stress

(NAPSI)—While family caregiving can be rewarding, it can make life more stressful for those providing the care. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this type of stress affects women more then men. Women caregivers tend to offer more assistance, such as managing physical needs. Three out of four caregivers, men and women, report feeling strained emotionally, physically or financially. The stress involved can be

worse for caregivers of the elderly, as it is hard to watch a parent lose cognitive abilities. It’s not unusual for caregivers to develop health problems of their own. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving. Caregivers may not have the time for regular checkups, may not fill a prescription due to cost, miss sleep or forget to eat healthy meals. It’s very important for

caregivers to recognize their own limits. Here are a few tips to help: • Find out about caregiving resources in your community. • Don’t do it alone. Ask for and accept help. Ask family members to do their share. • Simplify your life and reduce other sources of stress. Make “to do” lists. • Stay in touch with family and friends. • Join a support group. • Make time to get away and have fun. • Consider home care
