In celebration of the districtwide effort of community giveback, this holiday season the fifth grade students in Kerri Maroney’s class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District organized a schoolwide collection of

SECOND GRADE SCIENTISTS STUDY MATTER - The second graders at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District are learning all about water cycles and the different states of matter this December. Students in Ms. Orlando’s class conducted a science experiment, filling a clear bag with water taped on the window. Each day, they observe the changes in the water line. Students in Ms. Bennett’s class built structures using different blocks to represent the different particles that make up matter. Another group worked with mystery bags, using their senses to hypothesize what was in each bag. In Ms. McCormack’s class, students worked on their Chromebooks to study different stages of matter. A Nike missile similar to those that defended Long Island during The Cold War gets a holiday wreath at the Museum of American Armor by Joey Ferrara, 8 years old, of Lindenhurst, with an assist from his father Joseph Ferrara. Ferrara was among the Atlantic Crane team that included Operating Engineers Local 138 and Teamsters Local 282 that donated time, expertise and equipment

to tow and install the Nike, as a permanent exhibit at the military museum inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration as a tribute to those who defended the region during the Cold War. Local 138 Business Manager and Treasury, John Duffy, stated, “We believe we have a solemn responsibility to pay tribute to those who have served our armed forces. This effort sustains that

commitment and allows us to salute those who defended our nation during the height of the Cold War.” The Museum of American Armor is a New York State chartered, 501 C 3, not for profit museum. Located at 1303 Round Swamp Road inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Old Bethpage, it is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Author Shares Experiences The eighth grade students of Lindenhurst Middle School schools received a special visit from Thanhha Lai, author of the novels “Inside Out and Back Again,” “Butterfly Yellow,” and “Listen, Slowly.” “Inside Out and Back Again,” which is required reading for all Lindenhurst

eighth graders, is historical fiction, based on the author’s experiences as a refugee during the Vietnam War. She describes her journey to America, where she faced bullying and discrimination. “Her story is truly inspirational and helps to foster a sense of empathy in us all,” said

English teacher Deborah Weinstein. “ Her visit really brought the book to life for our students who loved learning about which elements of the novel were true and which were fiction.” Thanhha Lai has won the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its fifth annual voice to voice women’s empowerment session on Dec. 11 with the goal of helping students find their strength and voice. They were joined by members of the district’s administration, faculty members and past honored speakers. The day began with a powerful rendition of Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” by the women’s Madrigal Choir, led by choir director Gina Occhiogrosso. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Assistant Principal Tamika Eason welcomed the powerful women in the room to the meeting. “You are here because

someone believed in you,” she said. “Because you took advantage of every opportunity offered to you. We hope to create a world where all women can shine.” This year’s honored guest speaker was Aglaed Marcedo, foreign language teacher at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Marcedo spoke about many of the obstacles she faced growing up in Brooklyn, born in Puerto Rico to parents who didn’t speak much English. She spoke about her educational journey and the struggles she faced. But, she said, when she took the job as a leave replacement in Copiague, she knew she had finally

found her calling. “I found teachers I can look up to and aspire to be like,” Marcedo said. “I learned that it’s fine to make mistakes. I have found a career that I am passionate about and I learn every day from my colleagues and my students.” Her advice to the students: find your passion and your purpose and find lessons in the failures. After a brief question and answer session, the students worked in teams and reflected on the lessons learned. Each team created a poster board and shared their thoughts in a brief presentation with their peers.

SHOWING OFF IROQUOIS TRADITION - Fourth graders in Jennifer Spizuco, Katie Zecha and Karina Cranmer’s classes at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District designed and built longhouses as an extra credit assignment after completing their English language art’s module on the Iroquois. Students read and studied nonfiction texts to learn about what life was like for the Iroquois people during traditional times. Students gathered different materials of their choice to give their longhouses a natural look.
