On Dec. 4, the Lindenhurst Union Free School District hosted an ENL family night. There were more than 200 people in attendance at the event, housed in the Lindenhurst High School cafeteria. Coordinator of World Languages, ENL and Bilingual Education Jill Schilling gave a presentation called “Celebrating Our Diversity” that included an interactive map that demonstrated the diverse population of students that were born in other countries (countries of birth), the various student languages that are spoken for ENL students (born in the US and other countries), a complete overview of the district’s ENL program and the benefits of being bilingual. Parents and students played games, the library was there to promote their bilingual programs, there were give aways, a parent toolkit to take home and we had a google form survey. Students, their family members, teachers and district administrators took part in various activities designed to involve all family members. There was representation from the Lindenhurst Memorial Library who shared information on the

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. Annual Scouting Peace Light Distribution The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Saturday, December7, 2019. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, and Deacon Thomas Lemme, Vice Chairman of the Diocesan Scouting Committee, were also in attendance. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Peace Light flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed.

In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns. It was brought to Boy Troop 125 (Commack)’s weekly Boy Scout meeting to share with the scouts and their families as well as the congregation of the Commack United Methodist Church (the Troop’s Sponsor). Father Antony Asir of St. Thomas More RC Church used the Peace Light on Saturday, December 14 as a part of the tree lighting ceremony that evening. Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge will use the Peace Light during the Religious School’s lighting of the Chanukah Menorah during their holiday celebration on Sunday, December 22. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria

SHARING THE LIGHTING OF CANDLES - Some of the Scouts and Scouters of Suffolk County Council (BSA) and Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Council (Nassau County) who had been in attendance and participated in sharing the lighting of candles with the Peace Light, following the Lessons and Carols ceremony at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst with the Peace Light in a lantern (which had been shared at JFK Airport’s International Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 5th) fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years

it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in their own environment and communities. The Peace Light arrived at JFK Airport on December 6th. During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and has even being brought to Mexico. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope Francis, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the LESSONS AND CAROLS CEREMONY - Scouts entering the Lessons and European parliament in Carols ceremony with the Peace Light in a lantern (which had been shared at JFK Strasbourg, and the United Airport’s International Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 5th) at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Nations Troops in Kosovo. in Lindenhurst

PEACE LIGHT CANDLES - Troop 125 (Commack)’s Assistant Scoutmaster/Eagle Scout Dan Jiratano and Committee Member Mary Jiratano (and other congregants at the service) with their lit Peace Light candles, which had been shared from one person to another during the Peace Light ceremonies and service. The first candles were lit from the lantern that held the Peace Light, which was brought to the U.S. from Bethlehem. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. Worldwide, communities’ seeking international friendship and peace is a

special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.

Lindenhurst Middle School students were honored at the Breakfast for Champions celebration coordinated by middle school educator Kathy Curran on Dec. 17. Held at the Lindencrest Diner, the breakfast, now in its 21st year, honors students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle

school. Students are nominated by teachers for a variety of reasons and are recognized publically in front of proud parents, teachers and peers. With proud parents and teachers looking on, students received their certificates of merit from Principal Frank Naccarato who told them how they

each have a tremendous amount of power. Also in attendance at the breakfast were assistant principals Dr. Jennifer Cracco, Joseph Furno and Patricia Natale, as well as library media specialist Jennifer Freedman and middle school CSE Chairperson Kathleen Petrenko.

By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association December 15, 2019 Founded in 1971, the Long Island Soccer Referees Association (LISRA) is one of the oldest organizations in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and the largest referee association by far in the state. For the past five decades, LISRA has been providing refs for Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) games and has assigned officials to an estimated 750,000 soccer games since its inception. The LISRA Holiday Party at the James E. Allen Elementary School in Dix Hills on Thursday night, December 12 saw awards given to 16 referees who have particularly made a difference on Long Island soccer fields. LISRA Trustee Cathy Caldwell of Copiague

was selected as the 2019 Referee of the Year. “I’ve been refereeing for 20 years and I have loved every minute of it! I think that I have worked with all of you over the years. Thank you for the joy that you have brought into my life,” Caldwell stated. “Every time I step on the field, I feel privileged.” The Silver Whistle Award for excellence in officiating went to Valley Stream’s Jack Shippy. Shippy’s neighbor, Ian Reid of Lynbrook, received the Emrys Joseph Rookie of the Year Award. Joseph was a very personable LISRA ref and member of the Board of Directors who passed away 29 years ago and this award has been given annually in his honor ever since. Boltri is a former LISRA President who created the chapter’s wildly successful assistant referee program after the turn of the millennium and there are now 640 LISRA assistant referees.
