Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti.

Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. They also offer group programs, individual lessons, c o r p o r a t e workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Lisa’s mother was a special education teacher and her father worked for a book publishing company. She was greatly influenced by both of their professions. She grew up knowing she loved horses, but really wanted to become a teacher and work with children in need. Her father would often send her books while she was away at college, and one day she received a book titled Palomino, by Danielle Steel. As she read through the pages, she became inspired by what was written: a ranch that was formed to help people through equine therapy. From that point on, she was certain that was exactly what she wanted to do with her life. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa Gatti opened Pal-O-Mine Equestrian in 1995 as a 501C(3) organization.

Pal-O-Mine is located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week, and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome,

Additionally, this organization is proud to now offer a Frontline Heroes Wellness Program. This program is complimentary for medical professionals and first responders, and can be virtual or in person. The well-known benefits of being in nature include reduced stress while providing a sense of calm, connection and solace. Sessions for this program may include reiki, mindfulness and horsemanship. New York Blood Center Encourages Blood Donors To Schedule Appointments

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of

making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more

On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation to strike the word “Armistice” from the holiday’s name in favor of “Veterans.” Since then, November 11 has been known as “Veterans Day” and has honored veterans of all wars. Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October for roughly seven years under the Uniform

Monday Holiday Act, which sought to ensure threeday weekends for federal employees by celebrating certain national holidays on Mondays, but since November 11 bore such significance, many states disapproved and continued to observe the holiday on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed legislation to return the observation of Veterans Day to November 11 beginning in 1978. Should the day fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the federal government observes the holiday on the previous Friday or following Monday, respectively, according to History.com. The United States isn’t the only country to celebrate its veterans. Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and France also commemorate the veterans of World War I and II on or near November 11 as Remembrance Day or Remembrance Sunday.

Long Island Veterans Day Event Supports Service Men and Women For Wallis, a pup named Mork certainly is her best friend. They are inseparable. Mork is Wallis’ service dog, helping Wallis help herself. Mork retrieves the phone and other dropped items, pulls the wheelchair and opens doors. Mork is just one of hundreds of service dogs that have been placed with children, adults and veterans with disabilities across the country through Canine Companions for Independence. The largest nonprofit provider of assistance dogs, Canine Companions is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs. It has facilitated matches since 1975, enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by providing expertly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support without charge to ensure quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. “The service dogs create new opportunities and new possibilities for people that lead to increased independence

and confidence,” said Debra Dougherty, executive director of Canine Companions. She is located at the organization’s northeast region training center, the Miller Family Campus at 286 Middle Island Road in Medford (631-561-0200). _______ Local companions -Brad Johnson and Barney of Bayport: “When Brad met Barney, I saw the life come back into his eyes,” said mother Brenda Johnson. Bobby Morcerf and Summit of Babylon: “With Summit I don’t have to ask for help as often. He is always there for me!” Air Force veteran and retired Port Authority police officer Ken Hernandez and Miller of Westbury: “Miller is amazing. He provides me with the independence I’ve longed for.” Kevin Schmidt and Kip of Islip Terrace: “He’s always at my side, I’m his guy. He

makes my life better. It’s been tough, and he gives me smile every day. It’s called Canine Companions, but the companion part is what really fulfills me.” _______ Adults with disabilities, including wounded veterans and veterans with disabilities, are partnered with trained service or hearing dogs. The assistance dogs, with adult support, also perform physical tasks for children with a range of disabilities. Canine Companions’ service dogs are expertly trained and also are partnered with working professionals in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education setting. The organization is supported by many people across Long Island and throughout the region, including Colonel E. David Woycik, Jr. (Ret.) United States Army. Woycik was raised in Huntington and resides in Garden City. He is a senior trial partner concentrating on personal injury, construction, highway design and toxic torts at Sanders, Sanders Block, Woycik, Viener & Grossman, P.C., of Mineola. Woycik joined the board of directors of Canine Companion’s northeast region during 2010. Since then, he has actively supported the organization in deeds, financially and with fundraising. Most recently, a double figure donation was presented to Canine Companions in his honor by friend and fellow Hofstra University alumni James C. Metzger, owner of the Whitmore Agency of Garden City that provides insurance and estate planning. Metzger is wellknown across Long Island for his business services along with extensive support of athletic, education and other community programs.

helped Canine Companions organize an annual Veteran’s Day event -“Saluting Independence” -that recognizes service men and women from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm and the War Against Terrorism. Since 2011, Canine Companions’ Veterans Day salute has raised more than $500,000 to support the puppies/dogs programs for deserving veterans. “The program began as an awareness event with the dedication of a dorm room that David named in honor of veterans,” added Dougherty. “A year later, the Outstanding Service Award, named for Woycik and Lance Corporal Matias Ferriera, was created to annually honor one person or corporation for outstanding service in military service and/ or volunteering to assist veterans.” Colonel Woycik served overseas in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm and recently for Operation Enduring Freedom in the War Against Terrorism. He is a well-decorated soldier and has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Ribbon. Lance Corporal and Machine Gunner Ferriera was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan during 2011. He sustained bilateral below the knee amputations and a pelvic fracture. Today, Ferreira is a Suffolk County police officer. Additional emphasis has been placed on fundraising this year to support expansion of the program for veterans to include men and women with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. 2020 Saluting Independence This year’s “Saluting Independence” event will feature a virtual program

Captain Victor Prato of East Marion will be honored at the ceremony along with his service dog Barbossa. Severely wounded in Afghanistan during 2017 when his vehicle was targeted by a suicide bomber, Captain Prato was presented with the Purple Heart by President Donald Trump at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. “I knew that a perfect fit for me would be to get a dog that could be my companion and be with me as I navigate the world now,” said Captain Prato. “Barbossa is my rock.” Captain Prato was wounded when he served under 4-Star General John “Mick” Nicholson, the recipient of Canine Companions’ 2020 Outstanding Service Award. At the time, General

Nicholson was commander of Resolute Support and U.S. Forces-Afghanistan. Presently, he is president of the PenFed Foundation that empowers military service members, veterans and their communities with the skills and resources to realize financial stability and opportunity. As Captain Prato was training to receive his service dog, he and General Nicholson enjoyed an unexpected reunion. The general is a Canine Companions volunteer puppy raiser. He now is raising WestPoint, a future veteran companion. “As we draw closer to Veterans Day and celebrate the service that America’s men and women have dedicated to the country,” concluded Dougherty, “this also is a time to champion the companions that assist the veterans who have returned with combat injuries and need a little extra support in their lives.”

The 10th annual All Kids Fair, which was postponed from its usual month of April to November 8 has now gone virtual! An expo which draws thousands could not take place due to COVID-19, but rest assured a great time can still be had by all members of the family online. This year’s All Kids Fair, which will take place from 11 AM – 4 PM, will have a great line-up of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes will be: Incredibles Entertainment, Science Party, Captain America Entertainment, Intro to Chess, and an Adventure Style Class. For the adults, there will be classes on essential oils, avoiding sugar in your children’s diet, and financial planning. Since families always enjoy our petting zoo, this year there will be several virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey will be the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” will be highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event are “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant,
