Family Service League, a Long Island based nonprofit human service organization, is proud to announce that two additional Caregiver Supports Groups have been formed. These additional Northfork sites give Long Islanders eight convenient locations throughout Suffolk County, from as far west as Huntington, to and to both North an d South Forks. With generous support from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, FSL has provided FREE Caregiver Support Services to individuals caring for a person with disabilities (over age 60) since 2005. These services include individual counseling, support groups and trainings. Timely topics such as estate planning, stress management and nutrition are discussed. On average, FSL has seen 85 clients each month in 1:1 counseling and support

groups during calendar year 2017. These groups provide a safe space where caregivers can share their experiences, concerns and successes. It is also a great venue to learn more about community resources. According to a 2015 National Caregiving survey, more than 42 million family caregivers provide unpaid care for an aging parent, spouse or other loved one so that they may age in place. The value of the care is estimated at $450 billion dollars annually. Nearly two thirds (64%) of caregivers report feeling emotionally stressed, but 94 % say that it is important for them to provide the care for their loved one so they can continue to live independently in their own home. “Families often find themselves thrust into caregiving situations based on a crisis situation. They can become quickly overwhelmed by the enormity of the caregiver role and their own limitations based on distance, job obligations, financial restrictions, and other family responsibilities,” said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President. “This is compounded by the lack of information about available services. FSL support groups provide the resources families need and there are no fees charged to those who attend.” Caregiver

issues may include stresses related to the actual activities associated with caregiving, fear and worry about a loved one dying, concerns about the caregiver’s own health, and guilt associated with feelings of frustration and anger. This program continues to thrive and develop as a vital resource for caregivers. If you are a caregiver

With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,

this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Continued From 16 Vivona, current artistic director of the American Theater Dance Workshop, “Broadway Supports LIHSA” began in 2016 and has been produced and directed by the blockbuster duo ever since. LIHSA students had the opportunity to perform twice during the evening, along with the stellar cast of Broadway celebrities. They opened with a medley from On Your Feet and returned to back-up Wayne Pretlow as he sang, “Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat” from Guys and Dolls. “It is deeply touching that these talented Broadway entertainers donate their time to put together an unprecedented performance to support LIHSA,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “The evening will not only help raise awareness of our stellar arts programs, it will also provide our current and future LIHSA students the opportunity to see how successful they can become!”

Before each performance, the stars brieﬂy shared their backgrounds with audience members, which was followed by an evening of extraordinary performances. A duet featuring In Transit beat boxer Steven “HeaveN” Cantor and dancer Evan Ruggiero, whose determination and passion for tap dancing prevailed over bone cancer and a “peg leg,” resulted in a mid-show standing ovation that brought down the house. Dancer, choreographer and LIHSA alum Buddy Casimano returned to his alma mater to perform a stunning dance number for the adoring crowd. Also featured were child performers Ayla Schwartz, who is ten years old and about to make her Broadway debut as young Elsa in Frozen the Musical, and Anthony Rosenthal, who recently starred as Christian Borle and Stephanie J. Block’s son Jason in Falsettos. Lana Gordon performed “All That Jazz”

The evening’s show-stopping finale was delivered by Robert Cuccioli, who performed “This is the Moment” from his Tony-nominated role in Jekyll and Hyde. The entire cast spent the day at LIHSA rehearsing and spending time with students during a Q & A session where they shared stories about their careers and offered insights to the industry. Theater Tech students worked steadily throughout the day to ensure the technical aspects of the show were executed smoothly. At the start of 2016, pop music legend Billy Joel donated $1 million to LIHSA, along with his support of the school and its 40-plus-year history of nurturing Long Island’s up-and-coming artists. “I went to public school on Long Island and I am grateful for the music program and my music teachers for helping provide me the tools for which I have based my career,” he wrote in a letter to the Nassau BOCES Board. The Campaign for LIHSA is affiliated with the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, which is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation. The LIHSA campaign includes educators, artists, students and parents who are committed to supporting the only public arts high school on Long Island. The Long Island High School for the Arts Parent Teacher Student Association’s (PTSA’s) mission is to build a community by enhancing relationships inside and outside LIHSA’s walls. With community support, the PTSA will work to increase enrollment and broaden communication among parents, the school and Nassau BOCES.

Life Without Limits

Over 250 friends and supporters of United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island gathered for the Life Without Limits Gala at Flowerfield in St. James, NY on October 27th. This year’s event honored Kevin M. O’Connor, President & CEO of Bridgehampton National Bank. The event raised over $200,000. The funds raised will support the comprehensive programs and services that UCP of Long Island provides to thousands of children and adults with disabilities. “Mr. O’Connor has been a great friend and supporter of our agency and the individuals we serve for many years,” said Stephen H. Friedman, President

& CEO of UCP. “We are grateful for all that Kevin has done and tonight we celebrate his commitment and dedication.” Mr. O’Connor has been involved in special events such as the Life Without Limits Gala and has hosted art exhibits for artists in UCP of Long Island’s Brushstrokes Program at branches of Bridgehampton National Bank. During the event, Brushstrokes Artist Michelle presented Mr. O’Connor with one of her beautiful paintings to express her appreciation for his support. The Children Center’s Ukulele Club performed “Little Hands” by Inland Sky to the delight of the

audience. The newlyformed club consists of students who learn to play a variety of songs on the exotic instrument. Mr. O’Connor was inducted into the Ukulele Club that evening when the children presented him with a ukulele signed by all the club members. After the lovely performance, Mr. Friedman introduced The Employment Connection Mobile Training & Education Center, a fully accessible vehicle that provides career services to workers with disabilities who lack easy access to transportation. Paul D’Airo, a client of The Employment Connection, shared his touching story

about how the program helped him develop his self-confidence after he spent years suffering from low self-esteem. D’Airo received a standing ovation for his heartfelt testimony.
