Members of the North Lindenhurst Fire Department visited students at William Rall Elementary School to discuss fire safety. Students attended a brief assembly, where they viewed a video on the importance of smoke detectors and creating a family fire exit

plan. Students then proceeded to the school parking lot, where a “smoke house” and large fire truck were waiting. The smoke house is a trailer designed to show students what to do in the event of a fire. Fake smoke, imitating a real fire, appeared from

On the elementary level, several schools took part in Halloween parades, donning costumes for fellow students. Elementary visited senior citizens at the Lindenhurst Rainbow Center for the annual Halloween show. The students paraded in costumes, sang songs, recited poems and danced. Several senior citizens received a small pumpkin from a student and was wowed by the finale of “I’m Proud to be an American” sung by the students. Students in Caitlin Farrell’s class at Harding Avenue Elementary School used pumpkins to bring books to life. Lindenhurst community gathered at the Lindenhurst High School for the annual Halloween celebration. Upon entering the building, members of the school’s Marine Corps JROTC collected nonperishable food items for those in need. This served as a voluntary admissions ticket to the event. Sponsored and organized each year by the Student Council, the festivities provided a safe and fun environment for children to collect treats, play games and enjoy Halloween. Various clubs and student government organizations set up activities and games for the younger children in different rooms at the high school and decorated hallways in several familiar themes.

I Heart New York I love New York City. Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored. Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist. The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance. During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent

dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans? In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books. In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

In its 20th year, the annual breakfast was held at the Lindencrest Diner and honors students who exemplify Lindy Pride at the middle school. Students are nominated by teachers for a variety of reasons and are recognized publically with certificates of Merit in front of proud parents, teachers and peers. “We always think of a champion as someone who surpasses their competition,” said Principal Frank Naccarato. “The champions we are recognizing have surpassed our expectations.”
