Christmas came a little early this year to the young patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, thanks to the kindness of technical wizards at Presidio and Cisco Systems. Through the Cisco Santa Connection, patients who are unable to celebrate in the comfort of their own homes due to illness can still experience the magic of the holiday. Using a video monitor and web-enabled camera today, Santa “virtually” visited with children in the third floor playroom who were eager to discuss their holiday wish lists. The children, who were led to believe that Santa was communicating live from his home in the North Pole, deliveredw a list that ran the gamut from electric guitars and video games to toy trucks and art books. In the meantime, Santa (who spends the rest of the year as a Cohen Children’s employee) spoke lovingly to the children who were accompanied in the playroom by Child Life staff members dressed as elves and other holiday characters. And, for those who didn’t feel well enough to leave their rooms, a mobile cart or iPad enabled with Cisco Jabber software helped Santa travel room-to-room for a personalized bedside visit – all of this without once leaving his workshop in the North Pole, according to the children. “We’re so happy that Cisco was able to bring their expertise once again to Cohen during this holiday season,” said Patricia Ottavanio, special events coordinator at Cohen Children’s. “Thanks to them, we are able to bring Santa to the children. During this time of year, it’s very

Harmony Café is a nonprofit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.

Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected
direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

It is the intent of this local law to allow the Village of Lindenhurst to adopt a budget for the fiscal year commencing March 1st, 2018 that may require a real property tax levy in excess of the “tax levy limit” as defined by General Municipal Law § 3-c. §171-47 Authority This local law is adopted pursuant to subdivision 5 of General Municipal Law § 3-c, which expressly authorizes a local government’s governing body to override the property tax cap for the coming fiscal year by the adoption of a local law approved by a vote of sixty percent (60%) of said governing body. §171-48 Tax Levy Limit Override The Board of Trustees of the Village of Lindenhurst, County of Suffolk, is hereby authorized to adopt a budget for the fiscal year commencing March 1st, 2018 that requires a real property tax levy in excess of the amount otherwise prescribed in General Municipal Law § 3-c. §171-49 Severability If a court determines that any clause, sentence, paragraph, subdivision, or part of this local law or the application thereof to any person, firm or corporation, or circumstance is invalid or unconstitutional, the court’s order or judgment shall not affect, impair, or invalidate the remainder of this local law, but shall be confined in its operation to the clause, sentence, paragraph, subdivision, or part of this local law or in its application to the person, individual, firm or corporation or circumstance, directly involved in the controversy in which such judgment or order shall be rendered.

New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy. This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded. I want to be more active and take advantage of my newfound energy, as opposed to engaging in activities simply to lose weight and not be in pain, short of breath, uncomfortable. Spelling Winners On December 18th, fourth- and fifth-grade students of William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District took part in the school’s annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students qualified for a

loved ones and others who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas. A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances

Anthony emerged as the winner by correctly spelling “testament.” As a school winner, Anthony will now be able to compete in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Spelling Bee in February 2018.

Celebrating the Season whose presentations included holiday songs such as the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Festival Sanctus” and “Christmas Time is Here” in addition to familiar classics such as “Gee, officer Krupke,” from West Side Story. Donning “ugly holiday sweaters,” student council members greeted and spoke
with the invited attendees as they entered the library, which was decorated in a festive holiday motif. Twelfth-grade members of the orchestra provided entertainment while guests enjoyed lunch, which was prepared by the students in the food and nutrition classes.
Lesson in Leadership The students of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District were recently visited by taekwondo instructor, “Master” Danny Foran of Grand Master Lee’s Tae Kwon Do studio, who shared with them some valuable information about being a leader and standing
up to bullying. Master Danny, a nineyear veteran of the NYPD, explored with students in grades kindergarten through fifth, what it means to be a leader, and what characteristics a leader exudes. He encouraged students to think outside the box and explore what the bully may
be feeling. He explained that students could be the difference in the life of the person being bullied, or the bully if they chose to be a leader. “You can make all the difference if you treat people the way you would like to be treated, only better.”

A special acknowledgement was granted to Lindenhurst students Kaitlin Solich (92.5 hours), Justyna Filipkowski (354 hours) and Jarred Navarro (649.5 hours), who accumulated the greatest number of hours of service for their respective age groups. Crash Caroled On December 14th, the students of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District were surprised when the News 12 Long Island morning show anchors entered their
gymnasium. Donning “ugly holiday sweaters” and, in the case of weatherman Rich Hoffman, a Santa costume, the anchors made their way through the crowd of excited students as they
sang holiday carols. The students were thrilled to learn that their school was the school chosen to air on News 12 on December 22nd.

The Lindy Blues Brothers formed in 1979, and made their first appearance at the Lindenhurst High School Key Club talent show that April. The band was an instant hit. When it became known that a fellow classmate and friend, George Vega, was stricken with leukemia, the band decided to raise money for his medical treatment in the form of a benefit concert in June of 1979 at what was then known as the Junior High School (now the Middle School). Two more concerts were scheduled for the following month on consecutive nights. When it became known that a few days before the first concert that George had passed away, the shows went on as scheduled, and all of the money raised was used to help defray the cost of his medical bills. The band went on to play three more concerts at the High
School, all of them fund raisers, the last in January of 1981. These concerts became huge community events and are remembered fondly in the minds of those who participated and attended. The bond between the band members and support staff remained strong over the years, to the point of the members considering each other “brothers.” After many years of talk and speculation, it was decided that the band reunite after 36 years. All of the surviving members will be returning… all except the drummer, Artie Ballas, who had passed away in 1994. The purpose of this reunion concert is to establish two separate ongoing scholarships to present to Lindenhurst High School Music Department seniors - the Lindy Blues Brothers George Vega, Jr. Memorial
Scholarship, which will benefit a scholarathlete senior who is also prominent in the high school music program, and the Lindy Blues Brothers Artie Ballas Memorial Scholarship, which will go to an outstanding senior who made his or her mark in the high school music program. These scholarships will be presented at the Lindenhurst High School Senior Awards Ceremony at a later date. The concert will take place at the Lindenhurst Middle School, Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst, on Friday, December 29th, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. It will also feature an “all star” Lindenhurst High School Alumni Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Kevin Pike. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women.For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute.
