he Lindenhurst girls’ soccer program recently held their annual Kicks for Cancer fundraiser game in support of the fight against breast cancer. To raise money for Kicks for Cancer, the event featured food and apparel sales, 50/50 raffle and a donation bucket. This year, prior to the varsity game, the graduating members of the Lindenhurst team were recognized in a small ceremony with their parents.

Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District is celebrating its students and their positive choices with a month of activities centered around Red Ribbon Week. During the week of October 24th, each student pledged to say no to drugs by writing their names along with a positive/ healthy message on an eagle cutout. Students placed their individuals eagles on a poster in the hallway with the message “We can all soar like Copiague Eagles if we say no to drugs.” Students “ran against drugs” during their physical education classes during the week of October 31st and will participate in classroom activities during the week of November 7th. As a culminating activity, students and staff at Susan E. Wiley will dress in red during the week of November 14th.

Options has developed programs that provide housing assistance and long-term rental housing for individuals and families in response to the critical need for affordable housing for persons living with HIV/ AIDS on Long Island. Every year on October 20th, the National Council of Teachers of English celebrate the National Day on Writing through a tweetup using the hashtag WhyIWrite. This year, the students of Alleghany Avenue Elementary School

in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District joined the celebration. On a writing template in the shape of the Twitter bird and using the hashtag #WHYIWRITE, each Alleghany student explained what inspired

their writing. The birds were then displayed throughout the school’s gymnasium to serve as a reminder of the importance of expressing oneself on paper.

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very ﬁrst dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

ELECTION DAY 2016 This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.

You have Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who wants to continue with the current path we are on of big government being involved in many aspects of our lives. The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. No matter who you support, nobody condones distasteful words spoken or irresponsible and potentially criminal actions taken by either candidate - and I think you know what and who I am talking about in each instance! Putting all this aside, you have a simple choice to make: Trump - who has earned money, power and fame and wants to help our country restabilize and prosper

once again. He wants to cut government waste, repeal and replace the affordable healthcare act, rebuild and properly care for our military, and secure our borders for everyone’s safety. Clinton - who also has money, power and fame, offers us four more years of what we now have; continuing the affordable healthcare act, big government, big government spending and open borders for a global society. So...to anyone who is still undecided, I ask you - How? The two choices you have could not be more different! Don’t allow the onslaught of the mainstream media to confuse you. Getting Saucy First-grade students of Albany Avenue Elementary School recently took part in a tasty lesson involving apples. Donning apple colored clothing (red, yellow and green) the students worked through a myriad of cross-curricular

centers. They followed directions with the help of their teachers and created their own crockpot applesauce. Students used their senses to compare, contrast and graph apples. They read apple-themed

books, explored scientific ideas such as what keeps an apple from turning brown, and wrote opinion pieces expressing which applesauce tasted better; jarred or homemade.

Copiague Standouts For the first time in Copiague School District history, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students Sofie Wilson and Jade Dickenson were named semifinalists in this year’s prestigious Siemens Competition, the nation’s premier competition in math, science and technology for high school students. Wilson and Dickenson were selected from more than 1,600 students who submitted innovative individual and team research projects. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School science chairperson Renee Locker

and science teacher Tracy Wenzler, John Borghardt of Bergen Point Waste Water facility, and Joshua Perry of the South Shore Nature Center were among those who mentored the students on their project “A novel investigation surrounding Geukensia demissa as a probable control mechanism for the invasive species Phragmites australis.” “This is an amazing accomplishment for our district and for the community,” Locker said. “It really is a testament to the passion, hard work and dedication of these students and we are so

Copiague BOE Recognized School Board Recognition Week was celebrated at the Copiague School District prior to the board of education’s meeting on October 24th. Each year, New York State reserves one week in October to recognize school board members. School Board Recognition Week serves as an opportunity for faculty members, students, and community residents to acknowledge and thank their board of education members. Starting with a performance by the

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Madrigal Choir, the board of education was also presented with a banner of appreciation from the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Chapter of the National Art Honor Society. Along with gift bags filled with chocolate, the Copiague Teachers Association donated to two local food pantries on behalf of the board. The district’s secretarial unit made a donation to the Brittany Walsh Scholarship Fund and

the Copiague Principal’s Association gave donations to Alex’s Lemonade Stand, Hope for Warriors and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, all on behalf of the board. The Copiague Supervisory Association made contributions to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Cycle for Life, the Copiague teacher aides and teaching assistants donated to the ALS Organization, and the Copiague PTA Council supplied food and donations to Alexander’s Angels.

COMMUNITY SERVICE - High school students from MacArthur High School in Levittown and Lindenhurst High School in conjunction with their AP Government class have been volunteering in Lindenhurst Village Hall doing community service work in the Village Administrator Clerk’s Office. The Lindenhurst girls’ soccer program recently held their annual Kicks for Cancer fundraiser game in support of the fight against breast cancer. To raise money for Kicks for Cancer, the event featured food and apparel sales, 50/50 raffle and a donation

bucket. This year, prior to the varsity game, the graduating members of the Lindenhurst team were recognized in a small ceremony including their parents. “This group of seniors are very special,” said

coach Charles Brostowski. “It goes beyond their talent on the field. They are special because of their intelligence and character and because of the example they set for the younger girls in the Lindenhurst program and community.”

Fire Safety Lesson Students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District received a special visit from Harry Prodromides, chairman on fire prevention, along with several members of the Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department as a part of fire prevention month. Firefighters reminded

In an effort to raise awareness of the effects that bullying has on students and their families, Lindenhurst Middle School hosted Ryan’s Story, for it’s sixth-grade students. The anti-bullying program is based upon the life and death of 13 year-old Ryan Halligan. Ryan was a middle school student from Vermont who died by suicide in 2003 due to depression and constant

Renewed Efforts Copiague Middle School’s Home and Careers Club and Student Council started the new school year with renewed community service efforts. The two clubs joined forces to collect nonperishable food items and household supplies for the Hurricane Matthew victims in North

Carolina. From October 13th21st, the students in both clubs sorted and packed seven boxes for shipping. Thanks to the generosity of the Cpl. Kyle Carpenter Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets in Farmingdale, which paid for the shipping costs, the donations will

immediately be dispersed to those in need at the VFW Post Master Pacheco in the USNSCC in Raeford, North Carolina, a town devastated by the hurricane. Students also wrote letters and notes of encouragement to be packaged with the boxes for the hurricane victims.

During Red Ribbon Week, every student at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District pledged to stay healthy and drug-free. Dressed all in red, one

by one, each student signed the drug-free poster hanging in the hallway at the school. The banner will hang to serve as a reminder to make positive choices. Throughout the week, students also participated
