Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,
as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had
become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.
The second-graders started their day by reading “Dragons Love Tacos” by Adam Rubin. The students were then tasked with retelling the story, and sharing their favorite part with a friend. They also wrote informational
essays on how to make a scrumptious taco. The students performed for their classmates in a reader’s theater and learned the Mexican hat dance.
Thank you to all residents who voted in the district’s capital improvement bond referendum. The proposal was approved by a vote of 735 to 162. The district will continue to keep the community updated on the project’s timeline, as the plans are approved by the state, the projects are put out to bid and the renovation work begins. Dressed as little doctors, kindergarten students of William Rall Elementary School in the Lindenhurst Union Free School District learned about helmet and seatbelt safety from a representative of the Trauma Center at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during a Teddy Bear Clinic. Trauma Program Manager and nurse Jane McCormack spoke about general safety rules
and demonstrated the importance of wearing a helmet by allowing young students to drop two bags, containing uncooked eggs, onto the hard floor. One of the eggs was secured with a small helmet protecting it and thus illustrating an important point. “Helmets protect your brain,” said Ms. McCormack. “It is your job to keep your body safe and a helmet is a very good way to do that.”

Tending to Teddies Students were then able to demonstrate their newly explored understanding while caring for their own teddy bears. The little doctors completed “patient care forms” in which they recorded their stuffed animal’s “injuries” and the necessary course of treatment employed, including a set number of daily hugs for Teddy.
WEST GATES ON PARADE - For the first time in 11 years, West Gates Avenue Elementary School participated in the Lindenhurst Homecoming parade. The students and parents all worked hard to create their Toy Story float. The children showed their enthusiasm and pride for their school and for their community. They can’t wait to participate again next year.
Learning Fire Safety Students throughout the Lindenhurst Union Free School District received a special visit from firefighter Sarah Callahan, along with several members of the Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department as a part of fire prevention month. Firefighters reviewed with students the components of their uniform and provided them with an overview of what takes place when they respond to a house fire.
Additionally, students were reminded to never play with appliances, matches and lighters. Student volunteers practiced Stop, Drop and Roll, demonstrating how to roll back and forth on the ground in the event of any clothing catching fire. Also addressed, were the importance of testing smoke detectors monthly, changing batteries at least once a year and staying low to the ground. Lastly,
students were advised to have a family meeting place outside the home and urged to never hide or return to the house for possessions. During the visit with Daniel Street Elementary School, students presented Harry Prodromides, chairman on fire prevention, with messages of thanks for his many years of service to the district.

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
