athletic department coordinated the weekend’s activities. The parade on October 11th began at Fireman’s Park, made its way down Wellwood Avenue and ended at Lindenhurst Middle School. Each class float represented a different decade. The freshman class represented the 80s, the sophomore class depicted “Steam Boat Willie” to illustrate the 20s and the junior and senior classes portrayed the 50s and 60s, respectively. At half time, there were special performances from the school’s marching band, color guard, cheerleading squads and dance team. At that time, it was announced that he senior class won the competition with their beautiful, interactive float. In the end, the Bulldogs reigned victorious as they beat Commack 28-14.

Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.

Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming

over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Golf Outing Raises Funds Supporters of CAPS teed off against child abuse and neglect at the 16th Annual Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) Golf Outing at The Mill River Club in Oyster Bay raising $60,000 to benefit the CAPS Bully Prevention Center and CAPS’ prevention through education programs. The event also saw the presentation of the 9th Annual John Davis Memorial Award

to two long-time CAPS supporters, volunteers and past presidents of the CAPS Board of Directors, Nancy Greulich (Plainview) and Susan Silverman (Manhasset Hills). The award, named for the founder of the CAPS Golf Outing and a former member of CAPS’ Executive Advisory Board, was given to Nancy and Susan in recognition of their commitment to the well-being and

safety of Long Island’s children, which they have demonstrated in their work with CAPS for more than 10 years. “Both Nancy and Susan’s dedication to children has been demonstrated in their work as volunteers for CAPS and as leaders on the CAPS Board of Directors,” said Alane Fagin, Executive Director. “We applaud their efforts to prevent child abuse and bullying through their work with

CAPS and working to fulfill the organization’s mission of keeping every child safe from harm.” In their work, they have collectively presented prevention through education programs to more than 30,000 children in more than 1,200 classrooms across Long Island. “The proceeds from the golf outing will help underwrite the presentation of CAPS’ prevention through

education programs to school-age children,” said Alane Fagin. “We’re grateful to all those who took part in our Outing to support our efforts to keep our children safe from abuse and bullying.” Founded in 1982, the Roslyn-based Child Abuse Prevention Services is Long Island’s comprehensive resource center for the prevention of child abuse, bullying and peer harassment. a non-profit organization underwritten by private donations, foundation and corporate grants.
